...Food choices are influenced by many factors, age, gender, friends, family, cultural background and where we live. But the main purpose of food is to nourish the body. There are a lot of factors to consider when making our food choices. The three most important factors are: * How the food is grown * Where the food is grown * Income The way food is grown influences how we make our food choices. Advertisement is commonly used to inform customers of how food is grown (NCBI 199) Advertising agents spend billions of dollars on advertising and packaging in order to capture the interest of the consumer. They use the power of persuasion to make whatever it is they are advertising very appealing, even if it means lying to customers. The advertising agents may advertise that the food had no preservatives or chemicals but in fact they do. As customers we believe what is said in the media and on the packaging because we expect the truth to be told. Some foods may be labelled locally grown, yet in actual fact the food has been imported from overseas or a different state. It’s important to consider how food is grown when making food choices. Most food nowadays is filled with a variety of chemicals to make the particular food grow at a rapid rate. An example would be chicken. Chickens are pumped with growth hormones for rapid growth so that the amount of chickens produced can meet the demands of consumers. However the media persists that the rapid growth of chicken is normal and...

...covers our planet: the biosphere. Yet the way the food system provides food often severely damages the health of the biosphere through soil and aquifer depletion, deforestation, aggressive use of agrochemicals, fishery collapses, and the loss of biodiversity in crops, livestock, and wild species. The global food system has become such a dominant force shaping the surface of this planet and its ecosystems that we can no longer achieve sustainability without revamping the food system. At the same time sustainable food systems provide great hope for building a sustainable future—a future in which all can lead satisfying lives within the means of the biosphere. In this brief, we use Ecological Footprint analysis to document the current food system’s demand on the biosphere. Ecological Footprint accounts track the area of biologically productive land and water needed to produce the resources consumed by a given population and to absorb its waste. The Ecological Footprint allows us to monitor a central threat to sustainability: the liquidation of the planet’s natural capital as we consume more resources than nature can regenerate and create more waste than nature can recycle. Our analysis reveals the leading role played by the food system in this liquidation and underscores how profoundly a sustainable future depends on reshaping that system. 1...

...Marie O'Campo Environmental Science Lab Lab Report 2 Sustainability We hear the words 'sustainable' and 'sustainability' almost every day. But what does it mean exactly? Is it about people and culture, our environment, or jobs and money? Is it about cities or the country? Is it about you and me or is it something for other people to worry about? Sustainability is about all of these things and more. Sustainability could be defined as an ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself. It’s about taking what we need to live now, without jeopardizing the potential for people in the future to meet their needs (“What”). If an activity is said to be sustainable, it should be able to continue forever. Some people say it is easy to recognize activities that are unsustainable because we know it when we see it. Think of extinction of some species of animals, often due to the activities of humans. Or salt in our rivers due to changed land management practices. And at home, the amount of packaging you put in the bin that has to go into landfill. In addition to these, sustainability can be measured in things like our energy use and carbon footprint, solid waste generation, and even our food choices. Measuring your energy use and carbon footprint is something that every American needs to take time to do. This is very important because it puts in perspective how many Earth’s we would need to support human life if everyone lived like you. For most Americans, the...

...By doing service learning, I have been able to apply so much of what I learned in class to benefit our campus. The concepts of carbon emissions and sustainable farming that we covered have helped me understand how biking can reduce the impact our campus has on the environment. The work that EcoReps does goes beyond just alternative transportation. Some of the EcoReps members are hosting a farmer’s market, which provides environmental benefits that are similar to those of biking. These different projects are all parts of a huge effort to improve our campus sustainability and reduce the damage that is being done to the environment. When we covered carbon emissions in class, I wondered how we could reduce them and slow down climate change. Some...

...Imagine a cherry tree in full bloom, its roots sunk into rich earth and its branches covered with thousands of blossoms, all emitting a lovely fragrance and containing thousands of seeds capable of producing many more cherry trees. The petals begin to fall, covering the ground in a blanket of white flowers and scattering the seeds everywhere. Some of the seeds will take root, but the vast majority will simply break down along with the spent petals, becoming part of the soil that nourishes the tree — along with thousands of other plants and animals. Looking at this scene, do we shake our heads at the senseless waste, mess and inefficiency? Does it look like the tree is working too hard, showing signs of strain or collapse? Of course not. But why not? Well, for one thing, because the whole process is beautiful, abundant and pleasure producing: We enjoy seeing and smelling the trees in bloom, we’re pleased by the idea of the trees multiplying (and producing delicious cherries), and everyone for miles around seems to benefit in the process. The entire lifecycle of the cherry tree is rewarding, and the only “waste” involved is an abundant sort of nutrient cycling that only leads to more good things. Best of all, this show of productivity and generosity seems to come quite naturally to the tree. It shows no signs of discontent or resentment — in fact, it looks like it could keep this up indefinitely with nothing but good, sustainable outcomes. The cherry-tree scenario...

...Google: My Champion | Current Sustainability Management Leaders | Dylan Burkley | When it comes to leaders in sustainability, I cannot think of anyone who has done more for their company and society then my champion, Google. Whether it be their data centers that use fifty percent less energy than other corporations on average or the fact that they have been carbon neutral since 2007, Googlers not only lead the pack in sustainability, but share their knowledge with society and other companies as well. Google is a search engine first and foremost, but they also provide other internet services such as web browsing (Google Chrome), and e-mail (Gmail). They also provide a variety of tools to help businesses succeed on and off the web and build products that make the web better and faster, such as Android and Chrome. One thing that has not changed since Google’s first appearance on the internet scene is the possibilities of the web itself. Google was founded in 1998 by two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and was initially a search engine named “Backrub” of all things. They are headquartered in Mountain View, California, this is known as “the Googleplex”, but they have 70 offices total in more than 40 countries around the world and over 40,000 employees worldwide. To have a company as large as Google does and to be carbon neutral is extremely impressive to me and made me want to know more, so that is why I chose Google as my champion. I was not able to...

...design a sustainable community, one must use green alternative methods and use renewable sources. Sustainability should be a process of planned change and learning. To have a sustainable community, there must be sustainable relationships between people; also people need a relationship with the environment. Societies through managed learning should be able to adapt to feedback, improve decision making by sharing information, communication, and understanding (Sustainable, 2012). When building the community, I would use recycled materials. By reusing materials that would have been thrown away, I will be saving trees that would have been cut down to build. Another way we can contribute to a green community is by buying products deemed environmentally friendly. If we look for products which are friendlier to our environment through the production of the product and the use of the product, it will help us live in a green community. In this community we would recycle what we can and reuse what we are able to. This would not take any extra money. In most cases it will save us money, or we will earn money, I would tell people, if you don’t need your cell phone, electronic devices, etc., anymore, don’t throw them away. They can be recycled and reused. This will be an important theme in the community, reduction, reuse, and recycle. To integrate the principles of sustainability and self-sufficiency into the design of the community is very important. One of the most important...

...Provide an example of ‘sustainable’ marketing and justify your choice of organisation or brand with reference to their current marketing activities. Sustainability has been defined as ‘the consumption of goods and services that meet basic needs and quality of life without jeopardizing the needs of future generations’ (OECD, 2002). This may be interpreted in a number of ways, but mainly sustainability is all about restricting the amount of resources that are produced, but still making the most out of the resources that are available. The idea of sustainability is now recognised worldwide, and is currently a mainstream issue. This is shown by the growing interest for sustainable issues by consumers. However, even though sustainability has became a mainstream issue, the consensus surrounding issues such as climate change, sustainability and pollution is not a universal concern. Marketing’s role in promoting sustainability is essential as marketing can easily influence the behaviour of the consumer. Marketing is extremely influential in global society, and when used positively and for a good cause, it can encourage consumers to buy environmentally friendly products. However, it can also educate consumers to see the importance in making themselves more environmentally friendly by recycling and reusing products, and even just eating and drinking more healthily. This essay will outline the basic factors and critically assess the value and importance of sustainable marketing. Furthermore...
