The poem “Eating Together” by Li-Young-Lee is a short but very well written poem. In this, a family sits down to have lunch together and remembers their father who is unfortunately no longer there to join them. Li-Young-Lee, in the poem “Eating Together” develops the idea that the loss of a loved one can make daily events significant in different ways. Imagery plays a big role in this poem by helping the reader visualize what the scene is in the poem. For example, the poet doesn’t come out and just say that their father died recently. Instead he uses other words and clues to get that message across. “My mother who will taste the sweetest meat of the head, holding it between her fingers deftly, the way my father did weeks ago” (Line 5,6). This quote relates to the theme because the fact that their mom held the meat the way her husband did, shows that she misses him and that a normal lunch can become special in a way. “Eating Together,” describes cooking a trout, which is shared among the mother and siblings. The mother gets the sweetest meat, the trout’s head, and she holds it as the recently deceased father did weeks before” (Almon). Again, this quote shows how their mother is expressing her grief over her husband and how she held the meat in a certain way because she misses him. This doesn’t necessarily just have to happen in the poem though. Any family in the world could go through this kind of experience and any event or meal could become special to them. Another example of imagery is shown when the author describes their father. “Then he lay down to sleep like a snow-covered road winding through pines older than him, without any travelers, and lonely for no one” (Line 9,10,11,12).
