21 July 2015 Claim #2 (5-9) Upon arrival in Eatonville, Janie and Jody quickly become the most influential people in the town. Jody being a large landowner, store owner, and mayor, he has finally reached his goal of having power. Over the years, however, Janie and Jody’s marriage lost its luster; he belittles her and does not allow her to be independent, which she desires. This begins to affect Janie’s psyche, eventually she snaps and her and Jody live separately until he dies. Janie finally is freed from her suppressive marriage, yet it wore her down mentally and emotionally to the point that Jody’s rules still keep her tied down, especially apparent when she goes to mourn solely for the townspeople.
