Maya Angelou, an African American poet, once wrote, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” Many people believe that this is a great way to live life. This perfectly resembles Ebenezer Scrooge, from A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. In the story, Scrooge realizes he does not like the outcome of his life, so he changes his attitude. For example, he learns to love and appreciate his family instead of treating them with disgust and shame. Sadly, for most of the play, Scrooge is a greedy, rude, self-centered man. Slowly, he realizes that to change his future he needs to change his attitude. Sooner or later, the lessons of the three spirits who visit him kick in, and he learns that he needs to…show more content… His two main priorities are money and himself. This is best portrayed in a conversation between Scrooge and the Portly Man. While talking to Portly Man, he asks this, “May I put you down for something?” said the Portly Man. “Nothing,” Scrooge replied.” This implies that Scrooge will not waste his money on the poor. Although, that is the right thing to do. In addition, Scrooge also has a conversation with Fred, his nephew. “Why? Why did you get married?” Scrooge says. He truthfully does an amazing job of getting Scrooge to change his attitude. Christmas Future is the most mysterious Spirit of all. He wears a shapeless black robe and is faceless. He almost looks like the Grim Reaper. It makes perfect sense that he is faceless because we don’t know what the future will look like, so we are unable able to draw a face for him. That definitely made him the scariest Ghost. Future comes to visit Scrooge so that he can finally change his ways. Needing to change Scrooge, Future focuses on how self-centered he is, how greedy he is, and how rude he is. The Spirit accomplishes his goal and manages to change Scrooge's ways. Future forces Scrooge to change by showing him his future life. In his future life, Scrooge is dead. Still, no one respects him. For example, in the memory, Scrooge is lying on his bed, dead, and many people are stealing and biting on his stuff. This is so upsetting to Scrooge that he starts to cry. This lesson teaches Scrooge that he must start to respect people if he wants to be respected as well. Scrooge says, “I will not shut out the lessons that you taught me.” This shows Scrooge's initial change. Scrooge promises the Spirit that he will listen to their lessons and he hopes to change his
