" A Rose for Emily", a gothic short story by William Faulkner, is a story about one's unwillingness to change. Miss Emily, a woman born into the old south, had troubles adapting to the way things were after the Civil War had ended. Faulkner contrast the old vs new south to illustrate that the Southern elite class was oppressed during the Reconstruction Period by contrasting gold and ebony, repeatedly talking about the Southern improvements, and Emily's ever changing personality.
Faulkner contrasted gold and ebony to show that the Southern Elite were having a culture forced upon them. Miss Emily's walking poll was a staff of ebony with a golden head. The golden top represents how the North believed that they were better than the South, so they

The Sorrowful Southerner In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily

...“The Sorrowful Southerner” “They rose when she entered – a small, fat woman in black with a thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt, leaning on an ebony cane with a tarnished gold head.” ((Faulkner, William. “A Rose for Emily.” The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature, edited by Michael Meyer, Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2017, pp. 78.) Accordingly, William Faulkner flawlessly describes Miss Emily in the story “A Rose for Emily” as a wealthy, southern woman with a duty to stand against the North during the Civil War era. Accompanied by her Negro, Miss Emily is curiously watched by the townspeople due to her mysterious behavior. Following this, the end of Miss Emily’s life is when her dark secrets become exposed...

A Rose for Emily

...William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is among his most famous short stories because of the interesting method of storytelling it employs. Faulkner uses a non-linear plot structure in this story, as opposed to the more often used, more simplified linear plot structure of most fiction. “A linear plot begins at point A, progresses through events which build towards a climax, and then finally reaches point B” (Malone). In contrast, “a non-linear plot typically presents the audience with multiple paths from point A to point B” (Malone). In other words, non-linear plot structures consist of back-and-forth storytelling, or flashbacks. Because of this non-conventional plot structure, “A Rose for Emily” has been described as an “emotionally complex and chronologically confusing narrative” (Petry 53). However, the story has also been cited as “one of Faulkner’s most carefully constructed stories” (Everett 165). The effectiveness of the disordered chronology can be likened to the preciseness of an equation. As Faulkner misdirected his readers through the use of flashbacks, he revealed Miss Emily’s disoriented mental state in her dealings with the passage of time. Faulkner efficiently complicates the narrative situation by opening “A Rose for Emily” with the death of the main character. The first sentence captures the reader’s attention immediately, evoking a collective sympathy for the main character: “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral” (Faulkner...

A Literary Analysis of Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"

...entails. This is no less true in southern gothic writing and in the writings of William Faulkner. Published on April 30, 1930 in a major magazine at the time, Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” showcases the life of Ms. Emily Grierson, a local townswoman, and is captured in a mysterious and eventually horrific context that allows the reader to understand the sadness and morbid side of death. The story is a set in a southern context that Faulkner knew all too well and contains implications of contrasts between northern and southern society. Faulkner uses many different elements in this work to portray death in its entire grotesque and horrifying splendor. Particularly, Faulkner uses two certain elements to accomplish this task. Faulkner successfully conveys the theme of the power of death in “A Rose for Emily” by incorporating the use of the literary elements of foreshadowing and narrative voice. Faulkner’s use of foreshadowing works to reveal the theme of death in this work rather well. The story is divided into five different passages, each detailing a progression towards death – the end of Emily Grierson’s life. Just by listening to Faulkner’s tone in the first sentence and throughout the rest of the work, the reader can easily determine there is a definite presence of foreshadowing: “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see...

Be sure to give examples of works with a detailed visual and contextual analysis of each example to demonstrate your understanding of the Bauhaus approach. The Bauhaus school of art opened in April of 1919 by Walter Gropius. Gropius originally rejected the need for standardization and mass production within the arts, but after the first world war Gropius accepted the need.(Fiell, 304) The Bauhaus was created when Gropius combined the art schools Kunstgewerbeschule and the Hochchule fur Bildende Kunst into one.(Fiell, 83) The Bauhaus, meaning "Building House" was located in Weimar, Germany. Gropius wanted to create a new organization of learning for design, and sought to reform educational theory and unify the arts.(Fiell, 83) The Bauhaus curriculum consisted of two parts; students had to complete a year of foundation courses that focused on the use of color, form and materials. Following the year of foundation courses, students were to enter a workshop of their choosing in areas such as carpentry, ceramics, metal etc. The Bauhaus drew influence from other movements such as the Arts & Crafts movement and De Stijl. Throughout the lifetime of the Bauhaus, three directors took charge and led the Bauhaus into different directions. Walter Gropius, originally an architect, was the first director appointed to the Bauhaus; also the founder. Under Gropius...

New Moon

...New Moon By Stephenie Meyer Summary When the Cullens, including her beloved Edward, leave Forks rather than risk revealing that they are vampires, it is almost too much for eighteen-year-old Bella to bear, but she finds solace in her friend Jacob until he is drawn into a cult and changes in terrible ways For my dad, Stephen Morgan— No one has ever been given more loving and unconditional support than I have been given by you. I love you, too. These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume. Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene VI PREFACE I FELT LIKE I WAS TRAPPED IN ONE OF THOSE TERRIFYING nightmares, the one where you have to run, run till your lungs burst, but you can't make your body move fast enough. My legs seemed to move slower and slower as I fought my way through the callous crowd, but the hands on the huge clock tower didn't slow. With relentless, uncaring force, they turned inexorably toward the end—the end of everything. But this was no dream, and, unlike the nightmare, I wasn't running for my life; I was racing to save something infinitely more precious. My own life meant little to me today. Alice had said there was a good chance we would both die here. Perhaps the outcome would be different if she weren't trapped by the brilliant sunlight; only I was free to run across this bright, crowded square. And I couldn't run fast enough. So it didn't matter to me that we were surrounded...

Dubner CONTENTS AN EXPLANATORY NOTE In which the origins of this book are clarified. vii PREFACE TO THE REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION xi 1 INTRODUCTION: The Hidden Side of Everything In which the book’s central idea is set forth: namely, if morality represents how people would like the world to work, then economics shows how it actually does work. Why the conventional wisdom is so often wrong . . . How “experts”— from criminologists to real-estate agents to political scientists—bend the facts . . . Why knowing what to measure, and how to measure it, is the key to understanding modern life . . . What is “freakonomics,” anyway? 1. What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? 15 In which we explore the beauty of incentives, as well as their dark side—cheating. Contents Who cheats? Just about everyone . . . How cheaters cheat, and how to catch them . . . Stories from an Israeli day-care center . . . The sudden disappearance of seven million American children . . . Cheating schoolteachers in Chicago . . . Why cheating to lose is worse than cheating to win . . . Could sumo wrestling, the national sport of Japan, be corrupt? . . .
