...Growth and Development Sophie Evans Jill Windes ECE205 11/19/12 Growth and Development Many people use growth and development interchangeably when they are actually two separate things. Growth is physical changes leading to increase in size (Allen, 2009). Growth is measured; “the growth rate is rapid during the prenatal, neonatal, infancy and adolescent stages and slows during childhood” (Scibd, 2012). In comparison, development refers to an increase in complexity-a change from the relatively simple to the more complicated and detailed (Allen, 2009). Development is not growth as in when a child increases in size, but it is the growth of behavior;”development is also influenced by heredity, environmental factors, culture, and family values unique to each individual” (Allen, 2009). Growth is measured by charts whereas there are domains of development that are met to measure the growth of development. In this paper I am going to discuss the six major areas of development domains, an analysis of developmental milestones, and explain factors of what can contribute to atypical development. There are six major areas of developmental domains: physical, motor, perceptual, cognitive, speech and language, and social-emotional. Allen (2009) states, “Each is integrally related to and interdependent with each of the others in the overall developmental process” (pg. 35). Basically, one area of development is influenced by another area of development and so on and so forth...

...A letter to Jennifer Jeanine Ali ECE205: Introduction to Child Development Instructor Tonya Jeremiah 11/18/13 Hello Jennifer, How are you? I hope that all is fine with you and your little one. I understand that you needed some advice about putting him into the school system; I am more than happy to help you out and tell you what you should look out for and even the types of questions you should ask. I understand that you have a list of the things that your son is capable of which are, He learned to crawl at the age of eight months and began to walk at the age of eighteen months, he runs but sometimes falls, he walks up and down stairs but needs assistance, he prefers to engage in parallel play and usually opts for activities that involve play in one area, such as with his trucks on the floor, he has a vocabulary of ten to fifteen words and he often asks to watch television. Judging from your concerns that you had which were that you think that he is lacking certain areas of development. I would not quite say that he lacking certain areas I would definitely say that he does need to be in a school setting because he will definitely learn off his peers. He will learn to socialize and play with other children and even his vocabulary skills will improve. Running is something that he should of mastered by now which tells me that maybe he is not doing it a lot at home which makes him wobbly and not use to the skill of running. Walking up and down stairs without assistance...

...Curriculum Paper Lisa Lester ECE205 Introduction to Child development Brigit Fowler April 22, 2012 Developmental Delay can be easily detected by many if ones pay close attention to the growth and milestone stages within children. There are different things that cause a child to be delayed such as Genetics, if a child is born with a form of abnormalities in the chromosomes they could have Down syndrome for which they would have not only cosmetic problems but, it can cause them to have some other complications with speech, cognitive and motor skills. Another risk factor could be due to their environment whether it is lack of maternal care, exposure to toxins (drugs or lead); another thing could be if the mother has HIV or AIDs it passes to the fetus. Medical Professionals have said that infants born with fetal alcohol syndrome also suffer delay. Children with Delays are not always born with them, there are times that delays are due to a trauma at different ages, example could be a child is beaten and suffers brain trauma the end result can be brain damage for which they will have delays. There could be an accident for which a child endures serious injuries and are put in a medical coma, with that a child could suffer long term damage. Many things play a big part in a child having developmental delays. In order to effectively address a delayed child’s needs, an instructor must first know what area of development that child needs help with...
