1. The equations below represent the Open Economy Model of Mankiw’s Chapter 5, which determines the endogenous variables Y, C, I, NX, and in terms of the exogenous variables K , L , G , and T .

Suppose that the money demand function is [M/P]^d = 1000-100r where r is the interest rate in percent.?
The money supply M is 1000 and the price level P is 2.

What is the equilibrium interest rate?
Assume that the price level is fixed. What happens to the equilibrium interest rate if the supply of money israised from 1000 to 1200?
If the authority wished to raise the interest rate to 1 percent, what money supply should it set? a)
M/P=1000-100r
M=1000 & P=2
1000/2 = 1000-100r
500=1000-100r
100r=500 r=500/100=5 b)
M=1200 & P=2
1200/2 = 1000-100r
600=1000-100r
100r=400 r=400/100=4 Thus interest rate falls from r=5 to r=4
c)
r=1 & P=2
M/P=1000-100r
M/2=1000-100•1
M/2=900
M=1800
Fed should set M=1800

Suppose we have an economy described by the following functions:
C= 50+.8YD
I bar= 70
G bar= 200
TR bar= 100 t= .20

(a)(i) Calculate the equilibrium level of income and (ii)the multiplier in this model.
(b) Calculate the budget surplus, BS.
(c) Suppose that t increases to .25. (i)What is the new equilibrium income? (ii)And the new multiplier?
(d) (i)Calculate the change in budget surplus. (ii)Would you expect the changes in the surplus to be more or less if C= .9 rather than .8?
(e) Can you explain why the multiplier is 1 when t=1?

A. Y=C+I+G, government transfer payment is not included in GDP.
Y=50+.8(Y-T)+70+200.
Y=50+.8Y-.20Y+70+200
(1-.8+.20)Y=50+70+200
Y=320/.40=800.,multiplier=1/0.4=2.5
B. G-T=200-.2x800 budget deficit=200-160= 40.
C. multiplier= 1/(1-.8+.25)=2.22.The new level of income=320/.45=711.11
D. budget deficit=200-.25x711.11=22.22.If MPC=.9,The multiplier=1/(1-.9+.25)=1/.35=2.86
The new level of income=320x2.86=915.2. Budget surplus=200-.25x915.2=200-228.8=28.8.
E. if t=1, there will be no income left for consumption, or 0.8YD=0
In this case multiplier=1/1=1

c) We can calculate the effect of an equal increase in government expenditure and taxes by adding the two multiplier effects that we used in parts a and b:
DY = [(1/(1-MPC))* DG] – [(MPC/(1-MPC))*DT
Because government purchases and taxes increase by the same amount, we know that DG = DT.
Therefore we can rewrite the equation as:
DY = [(1/(1-MPC)) – (MPC/(1-MPC))*DG = DG
This expression tells us that an equal increase in government purchases and taxes increases Y by the amount that G increases. That is, the balanced-budget multiplier is exactly 1.

2. (a)Use the Keynesian cross to predict the impact of an increase in government purchases

a) The Keynesian cross graphs an economy’s planned expenditure function,
E = C + I + G + NX, and the equilibrium condition that actual expenditure equals planned expenditure. An increase in government purchases from G to G’ shifts the planned expenditure function upward. The new equilibrium is at point b. The change in Y equals the product of the government purchases multiplier and the change in government spending: DY = [1/(1 – MPC)]*DG. Because we know that the marginal propensity to consume MPC is less than one, this expression tells us that a one-dollar increase in G leads to an increase in Y that is greater than one dollar.

b) An increase in taxes of DT reduces disposable income Y – T by DT and, therefore, reduces consumption by MPC x DT. For any given level of income Y, planned expenditure falls. In the
Keynesian cross, the tax increase shifts the planned expenditure function down by MPC x DT. The amount by which Y falls is given by the product of the tax multiplier and the increase in taxes: DY = [-MPC/(1-MPC)]DT.

Nature vs. Man

...English 122 Nature vs. Man In the world now there are views of what can or should be done with the environment, use what is available to save any animal/plant/bug for the future. Then there are the options that go between those two extremes. Looking at some of the views from our readings as well as other sources, we’ll see what is looked at as right and wrong ways to use and preserve nature. There are many views on how the Earth should be used or preserved, but the how to do it with the world’s increasing population makes the answer so important to those that will come after us. While not about nature, Aldous Huxley’s “Time and the Machine” talks about time and how man has made himself a slave to time. Knowing that we have a limited amount of time in our lives, many want to do as much to fill that time as can be done. Most in the western world view time as something that needs to be taken advantage of, that there’s always a deadline for creating or making something. In some eastern cultures, there isn’t the hurry seen like we have. They aren’t as concerned for man-made time as they have “not been made conscious of the existence of minutes.” (Huxley, 366) He goes on to say that people living in large cities can live “without being aware of the daily march of the sun across the sky; without ever seeing the moon and stars.” (Huxley, 366) This goes to show that people are too into the passing of time and don’t look at taking time to relax and exist with nature. ...

Eco Terrorism

...Eco Terrorism Eco-terrorism is the term used to describe the violence in the interests of environmentalists. There have been cases when environmentalists have inflicted damage to the industrial factories, due to the fact that, they cause pollution and other environmental problems. According to Manning (2012), “Eco-terrorism can be defined as the act of violence or sabotage against person and property commits and support animal right activist.” There are some organizations that participate in it, such as, Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and Animal Liberation Front (ALF). These organizations managed to burn down a ski resort and blow up a laboratory among other things. On the other hand, some groups such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are labeled as eco-terrorists although they do not commit such acts of violence against humans- they do not attempt to injure or kill people, but only provoke people through property. This has led to a debate that touches on whether or not to classify these actions as "terrorist" or not. The FBI has given the environmentalists a definition ‘the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, sub national group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.’ John Lewis, a top FBI official says, ‘The number one domestic terrorism threat is the eco-terrorism, animal-rights movement.” Eco-Terrorists...

Argument Essay

...Mercedes Davis English 091 March 11, 2011 An Open Reader Reading is the foundation of our life. Without reading we would be like lost souls in the world. Everywhere we go and anything we do we have to read; at work, school, driving, etc. People who do not know how to read are limited in life, they cant get a job, and the everyday life would be a struggle. Someone who knows how to read has no restrictions, the sky is the limit for them, they are our lawyers, doctors, and teachers. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading”, he expressed his love for the unpopular selections, and how he learned how to dissect his readings. Moody also states that nobody will ever be able to tell him how to read, and also believes there is no right or wrong way to read. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Ready”, he explains his high school and college reading experiences. He tells us how his, Mr. Buxton, taught him how to analyze Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Mr. Buxton did not give him his own interpretation and made sure Moody noticed how Shakespeare repeated somethings to help Moody come to a conclusion. In eleventh grade Moody’s teacher Mr. Flanders encouraged Moody to develop his own relationship with the Gospels, in his religious studies. Then Moody continued onto college where he read Umberto Eco’s Role of the Reader, where he was introduced to Eco’s “Open Text” philosophy. He also read some of the great European and Latin Americans articles. After his...

Eco-Feminist Principles in Her Underground

...Eco-feminist principles refer to principles derived from the concept of eco-feminism. Eco-feminism refers to the union of radical ecological movement that seeks to champion the civil rights of women (Gregory and Giancola 378). Ecology is the study of living organism in relation to the environmental systems such as social ecology and economic ecology. Social ecology explores the symbolic, psychological, and ethical issues affecting the relationship between human beings and the environment. In most cases, eco-feminists surveys issues affecting women in the society such as political rights, access to employment, and other civil rights that are entitled to women. Nonetheless, women rights are still contemporary issues in the modern society because of the social alienation and discrimination of women in the society because of the patriarchal societal systems. For instance, the western culture does not advocate for equality for women as far as gender sensitivity is concerned. According to Gregory and Giancola, the issues affecting women in the society are ecological crisis dated from the 20th century (377). Therefore, Eco-feminism offers an alternative that society needs to adopt and embrace to foster equality without oppression of women. As such, there are varied Eco-feminist principles outlined by world ethics. The first Eco-feminist principle is reshaping of the dualistic concept of reality (Gregory and Giancola 382). The concept of reality focuses on the biblical fact that women...

...Weekly Reflection Paper Week 3 Ellen Foskey, Samantha McHugh(Borrayo), Tontanisha Scott ECO/376 8-25-2014 Professor Dan Jensen Weekly Reflection – Week 3 Ellen Foskey AICPA Code of Professional Conduct from week one talked about the purpose of the AICPA Code of Professional conduct. Our text also detailed how it represents responsibilities, the public interest (which is by itself one of the main purposes). Furthermore, AICPA has a few more purposes: integrity (also very, very important) which was what was at the bottom of the WorldCom Scandal. Objectivity and independence which I believe were lost in the scandal because of greed. Finally, due care and scope, as well as a nature of service. That seemed quite interesting, and I appreciated the knowledge that I received that week. However, week two was a bit challenging due to my church's revival, and all the reading that we have to do. I feel like I had fallen a little bit behind, but never the less we talked about the legal and regulatory issues that revolve around financial reporting. We discussed the ethics of accounting activities, what the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct is, what it has to do with accounting. Accountants should follow rules and guidelines that are in place for the best interest of the public. Accountants should work with clients, avoid any conflict of interest, as well as serving the public while maintaining honesty and giving accurate information where necessary.
