Sustainable Procurement

...S ustainable sourcing and procurement Sourcing and procurement as driving forces for sustainable business b y Helen van Hoeven, Lean & Green Foreword President Obama recently said that there are only two kinds of car companies: those that sell hybrid cars and those that will sell hybrid cars in the near future. The same is true for sustainability in supply chains. There are companies that source and sell more sustainable products and there are those that will do so in the near future. With a world soon populated by nine billion people and over two billion new middle-class citizens, traditional sourcing and selling will simply be a no. You are either on the pathway to sustainable development or you are out of business. The challenge of sustainability is reshaping the relation ship between business and society. Industry needs to better manage natural resources and significantly lower its global ecological footprint. And companies need to engage much better with suppliers and workers in the emerging and developing economies. The mission of the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) is to upscale and accelerate the mainstreaming of sustainability in international commodity chains. IDH joins the forces of business, non-governmental organisations, labour unions and governments. We bring diverse stakeholders together in focused and result-oriented sectoral coalitions that implement ambitious improvement programmes. These programmes tackle social, ecological and economical bottlenecks...

...Fashion Industry Analysis From the Perspective of Business Model Dynamics Author: Lisa Gockeln University of Twente P.O. Box 217, 7500AE Enschede The Netherlands ABSTRACT The fashion industry is a dynamic and volatile place, continuously exposed to macro-environmental factors that trigger fashion business models to change. The fast fashion model is currently at the forefront of the apparel market casting questions on whether its underlying philosophy is about to change as well. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify external drivers that might lead to such dynamic changes in the fast fashion model. Moreover, it will be investigated whether these may allude to a possible convergence to the newly emerged slow fashion model which is currently trying to penetrate the fashion market. The international retailer Zara has served as fast fashion representative for this analysis and has been examined for business model adjustments, which might have been triggered by macroenvironmental factors. It was found that especially social, environmental and technological factors have influenced developments in the fast fashion model and that it has indeed adopted slow fashion principles in some of its building blocks to respond to such emerging trends. The future of the fashion industry appears to be tailored by such externalities, continuously reshaping the fast fashion model to eventually arrive at a version that brings a long-lasting competitive edge. However...

Leadership Styles

...Signs appear in everyday contemporary societies. Signs are saturated with a lot of meanings and they relate to any language and are there to make us understand things through relating words with concepts like the word ‘silence’ which is a sign of communication that is indicative of meaning and it is ideological, it is also power to talk. Sign theory is an eccentric war of communication. It focuses on the discourse analysis where it focuses on language, power and ideology. Intelligence services are a key component of every state and their mandate is to ensure the security of states and they make use of the sign theory to supply the policy makers with information or intelligence which is fundamental in the policy making process. Evaluation and analysis’ role is to cast information into its proper intelligence framework and in the process minimising being biased. If evaluation and analysis is quality the intelligence given to policy makers will help policy makers to come up with quality policies and if the evaluation and analysis is poor obviously the policy makers will come up with ineffective policies. There are repercussions if intelligence services fail to analyse. Sign theory help in deductive, inductive and abductive types of reasoning. In this discourse I will define the sign theory, evaluation, analysis, four tools of analysis and the implications of sign theory to evaluation and analysis as a process which is scientific, logical, methodological and verifiable. Theory is...

Green Banking Practices of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh

...Chapter- 1 Introduction and Design of the chapter ▪ Introduction ▪ Scope of the study ▪ Objectives of the study ▪ Methodology ▪ Limitation of the study 1.1 Introduction: A bank is a financial institution, where people secure their money and use this institution as a source of possible finance. Banking in the form in which it exists nowadays is comparatively of recent origin. Before the advent of modern banking, direct finance, where the owner of capital deals directly with the user of capital, was the customary mode of transference of funds from savers to investors. Now, banks are engaged in various functions i.e., receiving, collecting, transferring, paying, lending, investing, dealing, exchanging, and servicing money and claims to money both locally and internationally. Bangladesh is a country suffering from immense social, political, economic and environmental issues and these issues need to be addressed for the overall development of this country. However, we all know that the people of the whole world are concerned about the environmental degradation, especially the rising of global temperature and thereby melting of glaciers and ice-berg in the polar region and consequently rising of sea level, which will directly affect the low lying countries...
