Assume that Utopia does not trade with other countries. The production amounts and prices (in US Dollars) for 2009, 2010 and 2011 are given in the table below: Year 2009 2010 2011 Quantity of Tshirts 10,000 9,500 10,500 Price of Tshirts Quantity of cars Price of cars Quantity of pineapples Price of pineapples $10 $10.50 $11 75 85 90 $15,000 $16,000 $15,500 50,000 60,000 45,000 $4 $4.50 $5 a) Using 2009 as base year, calculate nominal and real GDP per capita for 2009, 2010 and 2011. b) Keeping 2009 as base year for prices, compute Utopia’s inflation rates for 2010 and 2011 using both the CPI and the GDP deflator. When calculating the CPI, assume that the representative consumer purchases in any given year 10 T -shirts, 1 car and 100 pineapples. c) Explain why the computed inflation rates are not the same when u sing the two different methods. 2. For this question assume that we are within the short -run goods market framework developed in Chapter 3 in Blanchard. ...I was born in Kinshasa, it is the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located in Africa, right in the center. It is one of the largest country in Africa with a lot resources. The most known resource that we have is the coltan which is used to make smartphones. I went to high school in Kinshasa at Complexe Scolaire (School Complex) Les Loupiots and I played several sports such as soccer, basketball and tennis. I was the captain of the soccer and second captain of the basketball team. I was not planning on studying in an English program because I knew how hard it would be to learn a new language. Even though we learned English in high school, French was our primary and first language. I choose ISU because my older brother came here before me and was telling me how good the program was and that I would not have difficulties with English if I was willing to learn. I am currently majoring in Business Administration and I am planning on adding another major which might be management. I chose Business Administration because I did not know which concentration fits me well, but I am leaning toward management for my second major. I have four siblings, one sister and three brothers. I am currently living with my older brother here in Terre-Haute. I like to go hang out with my friends and watch sport games. I watch soccer, basketball, football and tennis. I usually go play basketball and soccer at the rec when I have time. I always thought that aviation was what I wanted...

...Econ 301 GM Buyout According to the life expectancy chart the average surplus age of a 65 year old man would roughly be an additional 16.8 years so that would be about to the age of approximately 81.8 years. If a retiree were to receive an average of $36,000 per year than just considering principle alone they would receive $604,800 in total with yearly installments as opposed to a lump sum $500,000 check at present value. This is a bit of a tricky situation because future inflation, discount rates organizational risk are all uncertain at this point, so I am just going to have to speculate on what I would do if I were in this position. Right now we are in a low inflation, low interest yield phase and if it were today I think I would take the money. Primarily because I do not feel very safe with a company that just got bailed out by the government a few years ago and in fact even if there were more of a financial incentive to let GM hold on to the money I think that I would still take the money and run. In my opinion, the risk factor alone outweighs any financial incentive that take precedence in the decision making process. I believe that the risk of debt and bankruptcy of GM are two very important factors for the company to take into consideration and they should not be ignored by any means. If the $500,000 were invested today with no money taken out for the entire length at the current compounded rate of 2.25% over a 16.8 year span it would amount to roughly $757,061...

...Econ-301 LINCOLN ELETRIC COMPANY 1. Based on the readings of quota restrictions & gold bricking it shows how employees banned together to battle against the firm by lowering their output and wasting time, causing the firm profits and production time. Based on this payment system the slope is positive for low performance, but there is no gain for superior performance. The employees have no incentive to go beyond the required minimum. This pay system was a disadvantage to the workers if they went beyond the expected the firm would have changed the rates against them. They would have to work harder for an even lesser pay. The easiest way to solve this problem is to introduce the performance pay plan. The switch would increase the workers performance and raise the competition level between the Employees. The incentive for moving from fixed rate to piece rate is the average output will rise. Output would be affected in a positive way, because this pay method would raise the standard and encourage speed and productivity. 2. Roy’s machine shop is facing many problems such as low production due to unmotivated employees. The employees have no incentive to cooperate with the firm because of its bad payment system. This firm lowers the money earned for over producing. It means that if a worker is going over his hourly limit, the management will have to pay workers more since earnings are relative to the amount of work completed. Thus the...

Suppose Demand and Supply for a competitive industry in the short run can be described the following equations: QD=100 – 2P, and QS=40+2P. Suppose further that the total cost curve for a representative firm in the industry is given by TC = 100+4q+q2, with MC=4+2q. a. Sketch a double graph that depicts the market supply and demand in equilibrium in conjunction with individual firm costs and output choice. Does not need to be to scale. Label all of your answers to b. b. Calculate the short-run equilibrium market price, quantity, individual firm output and firm profit level. Show your work. c. Calculate the long-run equilibrium market price, quantity, individual firm output and number of firms in the industry. Draw and label in a new graph the double graph depicting this equilibrium. Page 1 of 5 2. My Uncle Bob claims that a firm should produce (in the short run) until its average cost is at its minimum. He reasons that in order to maximize profit, a firm must minimize it costs of production. Is my Uncle Bob correct? Carefully explain your answer. (Stating a mathematical rule is not sufficient.) 3.
