Economical Choices in Society In finances there are a few values that people use while making personal choices, including: 1. “People face tradeoffs. Meaning to acquire one thing we like, we usually have to give up another.” (Mankiw, 2008). 2. “The cost of something is what you give up to get it. This principle involves comparing the cost and benefits of alternative courses of action. In many cases, the cost of some action is not as obvious as it might seem.” (Mankiw, 2008). 3. “Rational people think at margin. Rational people systematically and purposefully do the best they can to achieve their objectives, given the opportunities they have. Economists use the word marginal changes to describe small incremental adjustments to an existing plan of action. Margin means edge. Rational people often make decisions by comparing marginal benefits and marginal costs.” (Mankiw, 2008). 4. “People respond to incentives. An incentive is something that induces a person to act. Because rational people make decisions by comparing costs and benefits, they respond to incentives.” (Mankiw, 2008). I recently considered purchasing a cat. I took into consideration the marginal costs and marginal benefits before purchasing this cat. The marginal benefit is the cat would free up about 15 weekly work hours, which equals $330. This time is usually spent entertaining the family however; the cat could entertain them from now on. The marginal costs are: a pet deposit of $150, weekly cat litter $1, weekly food supply $5, a onetime shot fee $150, and toys $20, which equals about $326. So I will continue to receive the benefit of saving 15 hours and only pay $6 a week for cat supplies. As you can see the marginal benefit is greater the marginal cost. So buying

Analyse the Feasibility of Two Different Techniques of Fresh Water Supply in Egypt

...resources in Egypt, such as Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Nile River (CIA, 2012), the Nile water level is decreasing due to the result of evaporation, rainwater supply, hot and dry climate, vast desert and global warming . According to Kashef (1983: 163), comparing with entering water in Nile (35.69 km3/year), the losses are 29.29 km3/year. Thus, Egypt needs to seek some methods to alleviate the problem of water scarcity. Overall, this report offers two alternative measures, desalination and dams respectively. Generally, this report will analyse and compare the feasibility and differences between desalination and dams from three viewpoints: cost, environmental problems and social impact, by this means attempt to find the most effective and economical method to address the dilemma (water scarcity) in Egypt. 2. Background Egypt, an agricultural country, is located in the northern Africa (CIA, 2012) with three main water resources, namely Nile water, groundwater and rainwater (Abdel-shafy and Aly, 2002: 4-5). However, the desert region occupies more than 96% in Egyptian total land (Fouly and Khaill,1979:205-206) and the average annual rainfall seldom surpass 200mm (Allam et al, 2002:20). It seems that the geographical...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

...statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were convicted for their ideas. Hence, it is very difficult to change the traditions that are followed by majority of people. Similarly, when Darwin gave the theory of evolution, and challenged the old ideology, he was resisted by public. Nobody was ready to believe that apes were the...
