In your answer explain how your policy objectives would achieve their intended objective.

CORRECTING SOUTH AFRICA’S STRUCTURAL FAULTS FOR INCREASED ECONOMIC GROWTH

(Mentionsomething about GEAR and RDP)
Introduction

Economic growth has been handicapped by high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality, which continue to plague society today. Since 1994 South Africa has achieved an average growth rate of 3 %, a level that is mediocre by international standards and is still below what is deemed necessary for supporting a lasting transition to democracy and correcting the historical injustices of apartheid. Numerous policies have been implemented to correct these faults and increase growth but have seen little success. A combination of poor economic reasoning and implementation may account for this. But a recurring problem with historical and current policies is that they are contradictory and at times conflicting. The 2008 OECD report highlighted this in AsgiSA, which focuses on employee training but offers little to improve basic education. Therefore, correcting these faults and achieving increased growth calls for complementary policies to create a virtuous cycle for success.

The following essay looks at the labour market, industry, trade and public-private partnerships as areas of focus for constructing a democratic developmental state. Policies suited for each of these focus areas are discussed whilst highlighting how they complement each other to achieve a virtuous cycle.

The labour market

A lack of skills and employment creation is one of South Africa’s fundamental economic weaknesses. High levels of structural unemployment, due to a lack of skilled labour, emphasize poverty and

Eco Terrorism

...Eco Terrorism Eco-terrorism is the term used to describe the violence in the interests of environmentalists. There have been cases when environmentalists have inflicted damage to the industrial factories, due to the fact that, they cause pollution and other environmental problems. According to Manning (2012), “Eco-terrorism can be defined as the act of violence or sabotage against person and property commits and support animal right activist.” There are some organizations that participate in it, such as, Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and Animal Liberation Front (ALF). These organizations managed to burn down a ski resort and blow up a laboratory among other things. On the other hand, some groups such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are labeled as eco-terrorists although they do not commit such acts of violence against humans- they do not attempt to injure or kill people, but only provoke people through property. This has led to a debate that touches on whether or not to classify these actions as "terrorist" or not. The FBI has given the environmentalists a definition ‘the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, sub national group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.’ John Lewis, a top FBI official says, ‘The number one domestic terrorism threat is the eco-terrorism, animal-rights movement.” Eco-Terrorists...

Nature vs. Man

...English 122 Nature vs. Man In the world now there are views of what can or should be done with the environment, use what is available to save any animal/plant/bug for the future. Then there are the options that go between those two extremes. Looking at some of the views from our readings as well as other sources, we’ll see what is looked at as right and wrong ways to use and preserve nature. There are many views on how the Earth should be used or preserved, but the how to do it with the world’s increasing population makes the answer so important to those that will come after us. While not about nature, Aldous Huxley’s “Time and the Machine” talks about time and how man has made himself a slave to time. Knowing that we have a limited amount of time in our lives, many want to do as much to fill that time as can be done. Most in the western world view time as something that needs to be taken advantage of, that there’s always a deadline for creating or making something. In some eastern cultures, there isn’t the hurry seen like we have. They aren’t as concerned for man-made time as they have “not been made conscious of the existence of minutes.” (Huxley, 366) He goes on to say that people living in large cities can live “without being aware of the daily march of the sun across the sky; without ever seeing the moon and stars.” (Huxley, 366) This goes to show that people are too into the passing of time and don’t look at taking time to relax and exist with nature. ...

...Mercedes Davis English 091 March 11, 2011 An Open Reader Reading is the foundation of our life. Without reading we would be like lost souls in the world. Everywhere we go and anything we do we have to read; at work, school, driving, etc. People who do not know how to read are limited in life, they cant get a job, and the everyday life would be a struggle. Someone who knows how to read has no restrictions, the sky is the limit for them, they are our lawyers, doctors, and teachers. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading”, he expressed his love for the unpopular selections, and how he learned how to dissect his readings. Moody also states that nobody will ever be able to tell him how to read, and also believes there is no right or wrong way to read. In Moody’s article “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Ready”, he explains his high school and college reading experiences. He tells us how his, Mr. Buxton, taught him how to analyze Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Mr. Buxton did not give him his own interpretation and made sure Moody noticed how Shakespeare repeated somethings to help Moody come to a conclusion. In eleventh grade Moody’s teacher Mr. Flanders encouraged Moody to develop his own relationship with the Gospels, in his religious studies. Then Moody continued onto college where he read Umberto Eco’s Role of the Reader, where he was introduced to Eco’s “Open Text” philosophy. He also read some of the great European and Latin Americans articles. After his...

...Essay one. Economics is the study of human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses. This definition is according to Robinson. While Marshall defined economics as a study of mankind in an ordinary business of life thus it inquires how he gets income and how he uses it. This definition clearly defines that economics is about studying wealth and mankind. The two definitions have various implications among them, is that human beings have needs which are unlimited and he can’t be satisfied completely. Meaning that man can continue to have wants or needs but means to satis. The other implication is that man has means of satisfying the unlimited wants using limited resources. The other implication is that man has alternative uses of scarce resources. Economics gives rise to scarcity and choice as well as opportunity cost. Microeconomics about scarcity and choice. the term scarce means limited in supply. In this sense all things are scarce i.e. they are limited in supply. Wants are innumerable, but the resources for satisfying these wants are severely limited. From this fundamental fact arises the basic economic problem of choice. ...Question 1.1: Explain how a change in the demand or supply affects the equilibrium price and quantity in any market. What is “demand”? Demand is the outcome of decisions about which wants to satisfy, given the available means. If you demand something (in the economic sense), it means that you intend to buy it and that you have the means (the purchasing power) to do so. In simple terms, when we talk about demand we are referring to the quantities of goods or services that the potential buyers are willing and able to buy. The law of demand states that if all other factors remain equal, the higher the price of a good, the less people will demand that good. Simply, the higher the price, the lower the quantity demand. Chart 1 above was downloaded from “www.investopedia.com/university/economics/economics3.asp” Point A,B,C clearly shows a negative demand relationship. As the price increases, the lower the quantity demanded. What is “supply”? Mohr et al (197:2004) defines supply “as the quantities of a good or service that producers plan to sell for a possible price during a certain period.” Producers must be able to supply the quantities concerned although there is no guarantee that the quantity supplied will be actually sold. The quantity sold will depend on the demand for the product or service. The greater the demand, the greater the quantity sold. Chart 2 above was downloaded from “www.investopedia.com/university/economics/economics3.asp” Points A,B,C clearly...

LITERATURE REVIEW * In recent years, there has been an influx of eco-friendly apparel by all types of Manufacturers. The apparel industry, like many other industries, is focusing on Sustainability and the use of green products as clothing components. The integration of these eco-friendly items into a normal product mix constitutes little work on behalf of the manufacturer, but requires retailers to educate consumers. It wasn’t long ago that the only companies who were selling items made out of eco-fabric were so-called “tree hugging” or “hippie” retailers. In the last twenty years, this has changed drastically as the use of organic cotton, bamboo, and PET (recycled polyester) has become mainstream. High-fashion designers and lifestyle companies have been gradually placing green merchandise into their product lines. Patagonia, a manufacturer...

...accommodation choices. The greening of the built environment is a result of greater public awareness, information and understanding of how the buildings we live, work and play in affect the natural environment, our bank balances and our health. But what to do we really mean when we say a product is green? It is a broad term that people are instantly drawn to but can only vaguely define. It is often linked to other words such as ‘sustainable’, ‘environmental’, ‘carbon footprint’, ‘ecological’, ‘carbon neutral’, biodegradable’, ‘energy efficient’, ‘renewable’, ‘organic’, ‘recyclable’, ‘alternative energy’, ‘non-toxic’, or ‘eco-anything’. Supermarket shelves are filled with ‘green’ or ‘eco’ product, and we may not mind paying a little more for the eco-toilet paper to ease our environmental guilt about all the plastic packaging in the rest of our shopping. The purchase of ‘eco’ supermarket products can be a relatively...

Eco Friendly

...Definition Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment (see References 1). This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products also prevent contributions to air, water and land pollution. You can engage in eco-friendly habits or practices by being more conscious of how you use resources. Product Qualifications Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with "made from recycled materials" contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole. (See References 3) Practice Examples You can develop eco-friendly habits to help you use less and make the most of what you have. Turn off lights in empty rooms and use a programmable thermostat so you're only heating or cooling your home when it's occupied (see References 2).
