Ectopic Pregnancy: What is it, and how to take care of her physically and emotionally
Amanda M Strock
Samaritan School of Nursing

This paper will cover the topic of ectopic pregnancy, causes, presentation, treatment and care of a patient with an ectopic pregnancy.
What is ectopic pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy is a dangerous pregnancy where the embryo implants in a cavity other than the uterus. This can occur on the ovary, the cervix, in the abdomen or most commonly in the fallopian tube. Between 95% and 98% of ectopic pregnancies develop in the fallopian tube. (McQueen) Ectopic pregnancies are not viable and can cause many complications such as infection, hemorrhage and infertility.
In a normal pregnancy the egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube in which it then travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus where it implants and begins its growth. With most ectopic pregnancies, the egg is fertilized normally but then implants to the fallopian tube before reaching the uterus due to a restricted pathway in the fallopian tube.
There are many possible causes to ectopic pregnancies and some causes are completely unknown. Research shows that due to the increase in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease there has been an increase in ectopic pregnancies. Other causes or risk factors …show more content…
With all situations detailed history should be obtained that includes whether the patient has been bleeding, how much they have been bleeding and the consistency of the bleeding. Also included should be the date of last menstrual period, details of previous pregnancies, presence of pain and location of pain. A blood draw for human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) as well as an ultrasound should be ordered to determine how far pregnancy has progressed as well as whether treatment should be conservative, medical or

Medical Errors

...Introduction This aim of this research review paper is to discuss the various types, causes and cost for medical errors. After reading this paper, the reader should be able to realize the importance of understanding the know how of medical errors and also understand how various interventions can be used effectively to prevent such errors. The paper also aims to stimulate critical thinking in terms of awareness about medical errors. I have worked in the critical care field for eight years in the past and have been a part of policy implementation with regards to medical errors. Most of the thoughts discussed in this paper are research-based, however, a few are from my personal and professional experiences working in the intensive care field. Causes of Medical Errors A. Diagnostic 1. Error or delay in diagnosis  Failure to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy causing rupture and possible acute abdomen. The reason could be either because the obstetrician did not feel the need to order an ultrasound thinking the mild complain of pain to be insignificant to warrant an ultrasound or on the other hand, the radiologist fails to identify an ectopic pregnancy while performing an ultrasound, either due to incompetency or due to negligence. 2. Failure to employ indicated tests  Failure to check blood glucose levels for a known hypertensive patient who presented with altered or loss of consciousness. Delayed checking of blood sugar was found to be 20mg/dl] 3. Use of outmoded tests...

Chlamydia

...most cases do not show symptoms and are left untreated. It can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and lead to scarring of the Fallopian tubes causing infertility and higher risk of ectopic pregnancy. The research was carried out at the Molecular Microbiology Group, at the University of Southampton, in conjunction with the Department of Virology, at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, in Israel. Professor Ian Clarke, from the University of Southampton, says: "This is a very significant advance in the study of chlamydia and we are proud to be the first people to achieve this. "Previously people have been unable to study chlamydial genetics and this has created a barrier to the comprehensive study of this disease. "We, together with our colleagues in Israel, discovered that by treating the chlamydia with calcium ions we were able to introduce a piece of foreign DNA. "This will open up the field of chlamydia research and will enable a better understanding of chlamydial genetics. It could lead to the development of new approaches to chlamydial vaccines and therapeutic interventions." To prove that they had accessed the chlamydial genome, the research team inserted the gene for a fluorescent protein into C. trachomatis which identified the chlamydial-infected cells by making them glow green. Their paper detailing the breakthrough in the study of chlamydia is published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Pathogens and has also been selected as the Editor's Choice for...

Ultrasound

...Ultrasound For our project we researched ultrasound which is also commonly known as a Sonogram. The definition of ultrasound is energy that is generated by sound waves of 20,000 or greater vibrations per second. Ultrasound is used in many different arrays. It is most often used in the medical field. Ultrasound uses sound waves that are too high to be heard by the human ear. A part of the ultrasound machine called the transducer is placed on the body part and sound waves are emitted from the transducer and reflected back from organs and tissues. When the wave is sent back to the transducer it puts it into the computer which then measures the length of time it took for the wave to leave and come back and this is what makes up the pictures. Ultrasounds are used to look for many different things in the body from tumors to bones to examining an unborn baby. The history of Ultrasound doesn’t go back very far. Although ultrasound has been around since the first world war. It wasn’t until the 1940’s when it was first used for medical purposes. Two researchers are recognized in the history of ultrasound, Doctor Karl Theodore Dussik of Austria and Professor Ian Donald of Scotland. They were the first physicians to use ultrasound for medical purposes. Dussik first used ultrasound to find tumors in the brain and to look for the cerebral ventricals. He called his procedure hyperphonography. Donald wrote an article called Investigation of Abdominal Masses by Pulsed Ultrasound. That was...

Choriocarcinoma Not a Death Sentence

...According to Spickler and Oberleitner (2011), Choriocarcinoma develops from genetically deformed germ cells which usually produce sperm or eggs (pp.1012-1014). Research shows no exact causes for the development of Choriocarcinoma (GTD). Early research shows that Choriocarcinoma was almost always found to be a fatal disease. There are no known means of prevention for this disease. According to Spickler and Oberleitner (2011), although Choriocarcinoma has the capability to metastasize extremely fast, there is a high possibility of a complete cure or remission even if the disease has been diagnosed in later stages of development even with metastases (pp.1012-1014). My research will show that it is not a dismal death sentence for those diagnosed with it. Choriocarcinoma (GTD) is primarily found in women during their childbearing years however it has been diagnosed in men as well. This paper will concentrate on the causes, risk factors, and forms of treatment in women. Doctors have no exact explanation for the development of Choriocarcinoma (GTD), though there are many risk factors. Some of the leading causes are an ectopic pregnancy where the fetus starts development in the fallopian tube. According to Goldstein and Berkowitz (2004b) the development of Choriocarcinoma in the beginning stages of a pregnancy where the fetus develops only partially or not at all happens in about 50 percent of women who have been diagnosed with this cancer (pp. 2347-2367). In these...

...Medically Elective Caesarean Deliveries; Risks vs. Benefits Jason LeBeaú College of Du Page County Complex Medical Surgical/Leadership Nursing NUR206 17 October 2012 Medically Elective Caesarean Deliveries; Risks vs. Benefits Introduction Women have been giving birth for millions of years. Before the advent of technology, women just instinctively knew when it was time to give birth and their bodies did the rest. They trusted that their bodies were meant for this purpose. Midwives and village elders would come to be with the laboring mother and to help her through the process. Vaginal birth was not only considered the normal way of birth, it was also the only way of birth. Vaginal birth is no longer the only choice when it comes to delivering a baby. Cesarean deliveries (CDs) are now a lifesaving strategy. CD is a surgical procedure in which a doctor in an operating room makes an incision through the mother’s abdomen and down to the uterus. The baby is removed from the uterus and the uterus and abdomen are then closed with sutures. This takes place while the mother is awake and made numb from the waist down by either a spinal or epidural anesthetic. In emergency situations, a general anesthetic is used and the mother is put to sleep and is unconscious for the procedure. CDs were originally used to save the life of the mother, save the life of the baby or when a vaginal delivery wasn’t possible. Since the birth of CDs, they are now performed for...
