Critical Analysis of Professional Literature Anderson, M, and Fierstein, M. "Using Guerrilla Tactics to Improve Teaching." Faculty Focus Using Guerrilla Tactics to Improve Teaching Comments. Faculty Focus, 10 Feb. 2014. Web. 19 May 2014. Anderson and Micah, Program Coordinators at West Virginia University, implemented a study that focused on a co-instructional approach towards adult learner. This co-instructional approach has been coined as Guerilla Teaching. Guerilla Teaching according to the authors is a pedagogical approach, dependent upon two instructors, facilitating to a group of learners. Limitations of Anderson and Micah’s approach includes: lack quantifiable data, guest instructor’s content knowledge and adequate learner’s post-evaluations. This study’s intention from my perspective is for innovative instructors seeking knowledge reciprocity, (Anderson and Fierstein, 2014). The Guerilla Teaching approach is practical and employable if thoroughly planned in advance. Instructors will interject themselves within another instructor’s course discussion for approximately 10 minutes. Throughout these minutes, the guest instructor will ask students rapid-fire questions based on a current topic without the initial instructor intervening. Afterwards, the guest instructor will depart returning the focus back towards the initial instructor. In essence, this keeps students on their toes, familiarize them with other faculty and give the illusion of spontaneity. Anderson and Micah concluded on an interesting note, “Guerilla allows instructors to assess their student’s knowledge retention through the guise of a comrade. This promotes comradery amongst fellow faculty and may peak a learner’s interest.” (Anderson and Fierstein, 2014) The four standards selected for this discussion along with my inquiry for the Anderson and Micah is as follows: • Clarity- After the study’s conclusion, were there any additional details on the impact of Guerilla Teaching? Did either initiate a summative evaluation? (Kern, 2014) • Depth- During the implementation of Guerilla Teaching, were there any difficulties implementing the approach? Was compatibility or lesson scheduling an issue? (Kern, 2014) • Breadth- Are there cons associated with Guerilla Teaching or co-instructional approach? (Kern, 2014) • Fairness- During the implementation of Guerilla Teaching, was there a strong foundation of ethics considered with the learners involved? (Kern, 2014)
