Sukhraj Dhillon once said, “Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does.” Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a book of epitaphs written about each of the residents of the city. The epitaphs are full of secrets about each of the people living in the city. In Spoon River Anthology, many people face karma, which will negatively impact their lives. In Spoon River Anthology, a person who deserves karma is Butch Weldy. Butch worked a job where he had to work with gasoline. This job was very dangerous, and not many people wanted to work there. “And I came down with both legs broken and my eyes burned crisp as a couple of eggs” | (Lines 12-13). Butch had done some terrible things to Minerva Jones, a teenager in the town, leaving her with numbed legs. Because Butch faced the same injuries as Minerva, this is a very ironic situation. After his injury, Butch did not get paid any worker’s compensation because it was a freak accident. “And the Circuit Judge said whoever did it was a fellow-servant of mine, and so Old Rhodes’ son didn’t have to pay me” | (Lines 16-18). Because this was an accident and not out of spite, Butch did not get anything positive out of this. In addition to Butch Weldy’s life being destroyed by karma, so did Dr. Meyers’. Dr. Meyers is a resident of Spoon River who also faced many consequences from his actions. Dr. Meyers was a very well respected doctor in the city, but one night he decided to help a young girl by performing an illegal procedure on her.
