Edger Allen Poe

...I remember the day as though it was yesterday. Can you imagine being made, and eaten on the same day. Let me fill you in on the misery I had to endure. It all began one sunny afternoon. My brother just experienced the feeling of being grilled, and it was finally my turn. As Jackie the prettiest cook picked me up this was finally my chance. As I was cooked and fully dressed with all the right things a burger should have I finally realized that this was the end of me. As I was put on a tray my end was coming closer and closer and I finally came face to face with my killer. It was a little girl I never knew a little girl could be so brutal. She unwrapped me and took the biggest bite known to man (Ingestion).   As I was ingested she kept me in her mouth for thirty seconds before she started breaking me down with her teeth (Mechanical digestion).  I was now on her tongue. Her salivary glands begin to produce saliva that moistens me up and break down the carbohydrates I have stored in me, and this enzyme is called salivary amylase. (Propulsion) As she continues to mix me with her saliva I am no longer a cheeseburger, I am now bolus. As she is about to push me down her epiglottis closes her trachea so I don't go down the wrong path. I am now pushed past the pharynx and down the esophagus by peristalsis. I am now in her stomach and truth be told this is the nastiest place I have ever been to in my life. In the stomach I am temporarily stored there, and I am no longer called bolus;...

...The Masque of Red Death People don't really have that much in common, but they do have one big thing in common, that is death. Death is the one thing that no one can stop. The short story "The Masque of Red Death," by Edger Allen Poe shows how that statement is true. Poe was a man who had had many experiences with a disease that killed many people in his life, in his story "The Masque of Red Death," he uses a lot of symbolic messages to express his views and feelings on that disease. Edger Allan Poe stated out with a home life that wasn't very stable. His blood father left when Poe was about one. His mother was an actress that moved Poe's sister, brother , and himself around a lot. Then when he was three she died of tuberculoses. After his mothers death Poe was separated from his sister and brother. Poe was sent to the Allen family. Then when Poe was in his early twenties Mrs. Allen also died of tuberculoses. At the age of twenty-six Poe married his cousin Virginia. She later died of tuberculoses. His brother died of tuberculoses also. In "The Masque of Red Death," Poe uses color as a symbol. He used the colors red, blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and black. In the story red stand for the death that comes over everyone in the story. The Masque Of The Red Death Symbolism Essay

...Short stories written in different time periods consist of many of the same styles/elements. The authors of these short stories have many hidden meaning behind their words. “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edger Allan Poe, the “Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and, “Cast of Amontillado” by Edger Allen Poe have similar styles such as, using symbolism to enhance and foreshadow the reading. The author in Cast of Amontillado uses symbolism through the meaning of the title its self “ Cast of Amontillado” since Amontillado mean wine, and in the story the plot mainly happen based on the characters drinking wine, I thought the name symbolizes the results/effects in an irony way or drinking wine in this story. Since the character lures the other character...

Bells by Edgar Allen Poe

...The poem “Bells,” by Edger Allen Poe, describes the movement through a person’s life. In the first stanza silver sleigh bells represent childhood. Silver is a precious metal but not as precious as gold or the next stage of life. The bells “tinkle, tinkle, tinkle” (4) which represents playful and merry times. The poem uses i- sounds, joyful verbs such as “twinkle,” and phrases like “jingling and tinkling” (14) to bring us back to childhood. In the second stanza, the type of bell is a wedding bell made of gold. Gold is a very precious and expensive medal just as your wedding day is the most important day of your life. The bells show happiness with words like “delight” using long i- sounds. These sounds make the stanza richer and more resident. This makes the stanza seem longer and more important. The “swinging and ringing”(31) tell of dancing and having fun. According to Poe, this day is one you will never forget. In the third stanza, the bells are alarm bells made of brass. They represent fear and terror. The time of life Poe is portraying is old age. The author uses long e sounds such as “shriek” to show that the person is realizing they are getting old and aren’t as young as as they used to be. The “tale of terror,” (38) informs the reader that this is not a happy part of life but a worrisome stage. A person in their older age tends to be surprised or startled once they realize they are no longer in their youth. In the fourth stanza, the bells funeral bells made of iron which...

Final Paper English 210

...CJ Loehner Eng. 210 Tina Crossgrove 9/19/13 Montresor: Criminal or Hero? “Amontillado” a type of sherry wine that cost a man his life and all because he had a deceptive friend who fools him into thinking he needed some wine tasted. Edgar Allen Poe uses many types of literary devices in his writing to give his readers an enjoyable story to read. One of the devices is double entendre. One of the finest examples of this writing technique is in Edger Allan Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado”. In Poe’s short story we meet the interesting character of Montresor, a rich man who is out for revenge. Revenge most people would not even consider worth killing someone over. Not only does he have this revenge, Montresor is not much of a man for he does not want to fight this battle fairly. Actually, he is a two-faced person who is friendly and caring to Fortunato’s face while planning on killing him the entire time. During this story Montresor sometimes speaks using a double entendre. A double entendre is when you say one thing but mean something altogether different. When one realizes this it makes it hard to understand and causes one to wonder if Montresor can be trusted as a narrator. Edger Allan Poe’s use of this literary device makes one wonder if the reader can really trust what Montresor has to say, an if he is a reliable narrator or not. The act of getting revenge on someone is one of the oldest actions taken throughout the history of mankind. Revenge is harming somebody...

Annabel Lee

...Nicole Crespo Professor Tomko WRT 201 27 April 2015 The Beautiful “Annabel Lee” In his poem “Annabel Lee” Edger Allen Poe writes about a forbidden love that ends in a horrible tragedy. Poe uses many elements of poetry such as imagery to give the reader an impression of profoundness, symbolism to give a sense of setting, and tone to let the reader know the feelings behind the poem. With the elements of poetry the readers better understand used Poe’s theme of eternal love. It also helps us have an insight of how Poe’s perspective on the idea of love was to him. Given the background Poe’s life wasn’t an easy one which can be seen in the Poem Annabel Lee. In the poem, Poe uses visual imagery to describe many different scenes in the poem. One for example is when he describes the death of Annabel Lee, “ that the wind came out of the cloud by the night, chilling and killing my Annabel Lee”. (25) This quote shows how Poe wanted his readers to get a visual of a tragic cold night that resulted in the death of a woman. The poem is written in a musical way, one can imagine the cold night. The reader could feel it chilling themselves and could feel the heart break of the young lover’s death. Another example of imagery is when Poe writes, “So that her highborn kinsman came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulcher In this kingdom by the sea” (17-20) the image given is her family taking her away from her lover to lock her up in a vault by the sea where she...

...Comparative Essay Final Michelle Rex LIT/210 8/17/12 There are so many stories that take twists and turns that you never realize where the story is heading. So many great authors have surprised us with stories of love and death. With writing a play or a short story there has to be key area that grabs the reader’s attention there have been many that have grabbed my attention but some so much more. When I compare the similarities of the two stories that I am about to write about they were written ages apart from each other but have so much in common to me. The stories are of young men who do something that is going to change their life for good and in the end could cause them to be known as an evil person. There are two men that I am about to write about that are going to make the decision of a life time and after they do there is no turning back to change what they did. The first story is of Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, this is a story of where man is being tempted by evil and is contemplating making a vow to evil. Young Goodman Brown is going to go on a journey, on this journey he must leave behind his wife. Not only will Brown himself be challenged on the trip, but Faith is also troubled by sleeping alone and is “afeard of herself.” Because Faith is Brown's wife, she brings to mind an earthly union that on this night will be interrupted. Faith is “aptly named,” however, because on a different level she also represents his spiritual faith. This indicates...

Sexuality in Ulysses, Lolita and the World's Wife

...,The Presentation of male and female sexuality in Nabokov’s ‘Lolita’, Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ and Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry anthology ‘The World’s Wife’ The themes of sex and sexuality have always remained somewhat hidden by society, concealing a darker unspoken reality which has power to threaten the pure and romantic values of marriage and intimate relationships as well as established gender roles. Despite the alleviation of religious and moral restrictions, sex embodies the warped animal reflection of the exclusively human concept of love, exposing primal desires and ensuring its continued belonging to the realms of the shocking and distasteful, while inadvertently strengthening its power. It is this power that lies at the heart of much modernist literature. The illicit imagery serves as a physical subversion of the dated foundations the writings oppose. Prominent in early modernist work was the theoretical influence of Sigmund Freud, most notably in the case of contemporary writer James Joyce whose literary techniques, such as the stream of consciousness writing in Ulysses, have come to epitomize modernist fiction. Ulysses not only challenges the censors’ attitude to sex, but also what were considered the sexual norms for men and women in pre-war Catholic society. Similarly, Vladimir Nabokov uses sexual deviancy to protest the theoretical ideas implicit in modernist literature through characteristics derived from post-World War II civilisation. The absence of structure or...
