...The poem “Bells,” by Edger Allen Poe, describes the movement through a person’s life. In the first stanza silver sleigh bells represent childhood. Silver is a precious metal but not as precious as gold or the next stage of life. The bells “tinkle, tinkle, tinkle” (4) which represents playful and merry times. The poem uses i- sounds, joyful verbs such as “twinkle,” and phrases like “jingling and tinkling” (14) to bring us back to childhood. In the second stanza, the type of bell is a wedding bell made of gold. Gold is a very precious and expensive medal just as your wedding day is the most important day of your life. The bells show happiness with words like “delight” using long i- sounds. These sounds make the stanza richer and more resident. This makes the stanza seem longer and more important. Edgar Allen Poe uses many types of literary devices in his writing to give his readers an enjoyable story to read. One of the devices is double entendre. One of the finest examples of this writing technique is in Edger Allan Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado”. In Poe’s short story we meet the interesting character of Montresor, a rich man who is out for revenge. Revenge most people would not even consider worth killing someone over. Not only does he have this revenge, Montresor is not much of a man for he does not want to fight this battle fairly. Actually, he is a two-faced person who is friendly and caring to Fortunato’s face while planning on killing him the entire time. During this story Montresor sometimes speaks using a double entendre. A double entendre is when you say one thing but mean something altogether different. Poe uses many elements of poetry such as imagery to give the reader an impression of profoundness, symbolism to give a sense of setting, and tone to let the reader know the feelings behind the poem. With the elements of poetry the readers better understand used Poe’s theme of eternal love. It also helps us have an insight of how Poe’s perspective on the idea of love was to him. Given the background Poe’s life wasn’t an easy one which can be seen in the Poem Annabel Lee. In the poem, Poe uses visual imagery to describe many different scenes in the poem.
