Editing and proofreading are very important components of the process of checking my work before submission. After I finish my first draft, I started editing process. I reread my draft to see, for instance, whether my paper is well organized, the transitions between paragraphs are smooth, and my evidence actually supports up my argument. Next, I checked for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. I try to keep the editing and proofreading processes separate. Proofreading is my final stage of the editing process. It is a process of looking for any inconsistencies and grammatical errors as well as style and spelling issues. I am focusing on any inconsistencies, grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. I always approach

...interesting in this class. My current method of completing a first draft is a simple one and that is to get as many ideas down on paper as quickly as I can. After reading this week’s chapters and previous weeks chapters, I have found that the best way to start is to ask who or what is going to be my intended audience. The goal of a first draft is to capture my ideas on paper and produce a rough version of the final essay. (Connelly, M. 2007). There are several strategies that I have learned for writing a first draft. Such as: review my plan, focus on my goal, write to my reader, visualize the completed document, support my thesis. Amend my plan if needed, and start to write. I also found proofreading and editing interesting in this week’s course. Proofreading is about searching your writing for errors, both grammatical and typos, before submitting my paper for an audience. Editing and proofreading are writing processes different from revising. Editing can involve extensive rewriting of sentences, but it usually focuses on sentences or even smaller elements of the text. Proofreading is the very last step writers go through to be sure that the text is presentable. there are many proofreading strategies such as: start with the problem areas, read from the end to the beginning, look for typos. Editing strategies may be: always think about your target audience, start with sentences, consider words, check grammatical errors...

Writing Skills Positive and Negatives

...many positives and negatives, the positives would be I am good at research; I am also good at proofreading, revising, and editing. Even though my writing has some good quality to it, it also has some very bad areas that need major improvement in, such as hand writing, my hand writing has been bad ever sense I have been in school and it never seems to get better. Some other negative things about my writing skills are my introductions and conclusions, as well as my paragraphs with unity and coherence. My writing goals while being in English 12 this year is to become a better writer in all areas especially the ones that need major improvement. There are many writing skills that I have confidence that I am good at and that I show it in my writing, such as research, I always organize my research accordingly to how the essay is being written so I find what I need efficiently and then move on the next part of the essay, I also know how to incorporate research material into the topic well so it mixes and the reader doesn’t feel that I am talking about a completely different subject. Another thing I am also good at is proofreading, I can proofread any kind of written work that needs proofread and can find what needs changed. I also do well with revising and editing, after proofreading a piece of work I can revise and change or edit what was wrong or should have been changed in the paper. While I have many positive points to my writing skill I also have many negatives or areas...

Reading

...How do you correct your student’s grammar mistakes? Instructors often lament the sloppiness of their students’ writing. Grammatical problems abound in college student writing, and when student papers are filled with errors, many teachers feel obligated to correct every sentence-level error they see. While marking each error can be an extremely time-consuming task, it is always the hope that students will read these comments and learn from the corrections. Is this really what happens? Is the time well spent? Unfortunately correcting errors for students will probably not help them learn to correct errors themselves. Only the most conscientious students will pour over your comments and reach for their grammar handbooks for additional information. Rather, in cases where every error is marked and corrected, the student will likely believe that the instructor has done all the work, and that little revision is necessary beyond that indicated by the corrections. If students are not given a chance to revise work, chances are good that they will not attend to your comments at all. Another downfall to correcting every spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization error in a student paper is that it can end up taking the focus of your comments off the content and organization of the piece. Even if you are careful to attend to both mechanics and content, it is important to keep in mind that students can be easily overwhelmed...

Analyze the Process of Team Writing

...Writing a paper either individually or in a group, there are many things to consider other than just the writing itself. Selecting a topic to write about is different by yourself as opposed to a group. When writing alone, you don't have anyone else to contend with, so the choices are easier to make. However, you may not have as many options as you would working in a group, many people working together will come up with a much larger range of topics. Either way has its benefits as well as its problems. Having more topics to pick from will give any paper a much richer material base to pool from, but at the same time having to deal with many people means that things may not always go smoothly, as some members of the group may not see eye to eye on every topic. On the other side of that, one person writing a paper will have fewer problems picking a topic, but at the same time will not have as many to choose from as someone working in a group. One thing both ways of writing a paper have in common is that you still have to pick one subject to work with, regardless of how many people are working on the paper. And depending on the subject that you have to work with, a group or individual may come to the same conclusion in a short amount of time. When writing in a group, it can be more difficult to edit work as more than one person is writing it. When you write by yourself, the revisions can be a bit easier as you can have a better vision of the finished product as well as the fact that...

Effective College Level Writing

...problem solving (including planning), decision making, and inferencing." (p. 52). Therefore planning is a critical aspect for effective college level writing. To have a good plan, the student needs to understand the assignment. According to Riedinger (n.d.)"Don not assume that every teacher expects the same type of writing or research or that every assignment, even from the same teacher, will be the same." According to Carter (2008), "Understanding the purpose of an assignment is vital, particularly at the college level where professors will assign a broader range of paper styles." The student needs to read the instructions more than once, go back, and read them throughout the assignment. Getting all the students research complete before a student starts writing is a good strategy towards the planning process. According to Carter (2008), "Completing research for a college writing assignment or academic paper before the actual writing process begins will help students to avoid time-consuming revisions." Writing ideas down, is also a good strategy in the planning process. Creating an Outline...

...Essay writing (Assignment writing) Examples from Deakin University (Some editing – WHJ – April 2013) What makes a good essay? These are the views of one lecturer on good essays. “Follow these relatively simple rules and a student will produce a good essay” The student does the following: * Answers the question set by the lecturer. * Develops the argument logically, so that one point follows from another coherently. The essay should hold together and be consistent. * Indicates the evidence on which the argument and individual points are based and acknowledge the sources of information. Paraphrase and summarise the writers mentioned – do not just use direct quotes. * Keeps to the word limits and other directions set by the lecturer and is as concise as possible. * Avoids irrelevant or extraneous information that detracts from the main argument. * Uses words that he/she understands and is comfortable with. Some students will have a better command of language and a wider vocabulary than others. However, the important thing is to get the message across clearly * Is sure to edit the work for spelling and typographical mistakes before handing it in. Sloppy work detracts from what might otherwise be a good essay. To summarise, a good essay will: a) develop a logical argument b) be coherent, consistent and concise c) provide evidence d) acknowledge sources e) conform to directions f) use clear language.
