...Education is defined as the act or process of acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. It can also be stated as the art of teaching and learning. As humans, we learn daily without knowing whether it’s while we are driving, watching TV or having a conversation with others. My love with education came to me during a daily project with my younger brother Freeman. While my brother was a 4th grader at Estelle Elementary, he had difficulty learning the differences of multiplication and division. The techniques that his teachers were using weren’t effective for him and he sought help from his older sister. After discovering what the problem was, we immediately found a solution. I taught him a method that I used during my year as a 4th grader. Skip counting. We repeatedly went over skip counting starting from multiples of 2 until we reached 24. Freeman returned home from school the next day and thanked me for showing him the way. Though I was only a 7th grader, I knew I wanted to attend college to become a teacher/counselor. Upon my high school graduation from L.W. Higgins, I attended Nicholls State University where I majored in Elementary Education. After my graduation, I immediately began teaching Secondary Mathematics at R.K Smith Middle. After 1 year of Math I taught Physical Education at La Belle Aire Elementary. During my employment at La Belle Aire, I enrolled in...

...Counseling is not a one size fits all kind of technique. What may work for one individual may not work for another if a change is the expected outcome. So, the primary purpose of this paper is to discuss in detail how the integration of biblical truth in accepted secular counseling technique works to help clients obtain both an inner and outer serenity. Even though, the technique used in professional counseling differs from the technique used in lay Christian counseling. Together they provide the necessary skills to help those that they counsel filter through their problems to find peace. Support for Professional Counseling While, professional counseling is more secular in structure mainly because it uses a psychotherapy method as a way to...

...understand the role she will play in the church community as a pastoral counselor. She will seek to identify ethical boundaries, Paradigm for Identity and Ethical Boundaries, future partnerships, and pre-counseling paperwork. Paradigm for Identity and Ethical Boundaries Paramount in any ministry is the need to adhere to a biblical code of ethics and the standards set forth; that is, a minimal standard that identifies oneself as a competent and trustworthy Christian worker. These standards are largely found within the context and framework of the Bible. As a biblical counselor or pastoral counselor it is important that one adheres to the word of God and recognizes the importance to maintain ethics and boundaries. This is to ensure that the worker is not operating according to their own flesh, but by the will and purpose of God. However, this is not a goal one can obtain on their own. In order to successfully do this one has to be connected to the Vine, in good fellowship with God, and listening for His voice when working with counselees. Trull and Carter (1993/2004) present the following items as essential boundaries for the establishment of this student-counselor’s biblical professional paradigm: 1. Education – The pastor will prepare for service by obtaining an education in liberal arts while specializing in theology and ministry. This will reflect a lifelong devotion to study and growth for continuing service. (Inspiration: 2 Timothy 2:15) 2. Competency – The pastor...

...Psychopharmacology and Mental Health Counseling Samantha Jackson Walden University Psychopharmacology and Mental Health Counseling Kaut and Dicknson (2007) states “a growing challenge for mental health counselors is to understand the potential benefits and limitations of many different types of drugs “(.p204-205). Drugs are prescribed to have an effect on the brain and behavior of clients. Mental health counselors are advised to be trained in how psychotropic medications can benefit and be at risk for their clients and to develop a collaborative approach to treatment (Kaut & Anderson, 2004; King & Dickinson, 2007). While mental health counselors cannot prescribe medication, they can recommend medication and educated their clients about them. A mental health counselor must stay within legal and ethical boundaries, while doing what’s best for the client. Recommending or Prescribing Medication A mental health counselor has no legal right to prescribe, dispense or administer any medication. When recommending medication it is important for a mental health counselor to stay within ethical and legal boundaries, while working with prescribing doctors. When a mental health counselor is informed about pharmacological interventions it benefits the client, the counselor and the prescribing professional (King& Anderson, 2004). Legal Limitation Mental health counselors can recommend any medication that they are educated on. Legally a mental health counselor cannot...

...dealing with, they also face a deficit in the world around them; a lack of equal opportunity for many when seeking employment. Career counseling for those who have a disability is an essential task that should include the community as well as the client. Zunker (2012) states, “The overarching counseling goal for persons with disabilities is to maximize each individual’s potential for life and work in the 21st century” (p. 268). This is a task that the counselor should undertake with their clients who have added challenges, as well as advocating to the community to assist with acceptance; “Ideally, a cooperative effort between teachers and counselors promotes an effective school program that is supported and recognized by the community” (p. 269), this further supports all continued efforts and opportunities for our clients. ...Online Therapy The new millennium brought on tremendous changes through the internet. Information is accessible easily online along with numerous services. The Human Services realm has begun to offer services via internet. Services offered by online counseling are for anger management, depression, child hood, trauma and HIV and AIDS. In this thesis I will discuss the services provided by each site, the experts the form of communication used through the online services and regulations or guidelines that each must adhere to. The three online services I decided to use were Ericka Russina, MA, LPC, NCC; Serenity Online Therapy and Sunrise Therapy. Each website offers a synopsis of the services provided, the provider and background information. The http://www.licensedcounselor.com/onlinetx3.html website which is for Erica Russina provides services via internet and in the office. The website states “Online therapy may serve as a bridge to overcoming these barriers for those who may be deaf, ill, live in remote areas with few resources, are afraid of the "stigma",” (Rusina, 2012). However the site also mentions that an individual is experiencing an actual crisis to contact the local emergency agency. The prospective client can review the website, check the counselor’s credentials, rates and fees, and determine if the services provided are needed. Once the decision has been made the individual can then agree to the online therapy review the disclaimer, submit the request for therapy...

...Accomplished, achievement-driven and results oriented individual, seeking entry into Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling with a Forensic Counseling specialization. Personal/Professional Goals I am interested in furthering my degree, so I can advance in my career and more effectively help people with mental health disorders within the judicial system. After I earn a Master’s of Science in Mental Health Counseling I want become a licensed clinician. My focus primarily will be on helping youth that are court adjudicated into residential therapeutic facilities, such as KidsPeace. At KidsPeace they accept adjudicated clients but there is not a specific program in place to effectively treat these individuals. It is my goal along with the program director of the organization for myself to develop and pioneer a conduct disorder program and establish it within the KidsPeace organization. The reasoning behind choosing this field is my work experience and some of the population I have been exposed to. Through my observation violence is a learned behavior, and unfortunately young victims of violence generally become perpetrators of crime and develop mental health disorders. Many times if juvenile offenders are not adjudicated to the correct residential therapeutic facility; that specializes in conduct disorder programming. When this happens these individuals are more likely to cycle through the judicial system and become career criminal, which leads to over populated correctional...

...Case conceptualization as defined by Erford (2010) refers to “How professional counselors understand the nature of clients’ concerns, how and why the problems have developed, and the types of counseling interventions that might be helpful.” Additionally, “A good case conceptualization should effectively link a client’s presenting problem to a treatment plan as well as provide the basis for tailoring treatment to client need and expectations” (Sperry, 2005). Sperry continues by stating that “The purpose of a well-articulated case conceptualization is to better understate and more effectively treat a client or client-system, that is, a couple or family.” Assessment is the preliminary process of case conceptualization, which according to Barlow & Durand (2003) and Nystul (2006) includes “intake interviews, test and inventories, behavioral observations, and relevant information gather from other source.” A thorough assessment is important in collecting sufficient information in order to understand the underlining issue of the client. Erford (2010) argues that “a good treatment plan requires an assessment appropriate to the client’s presenting concerns and a case conceptualization that includes an understanding of what the problem is, how it developed, and how to deal with it”. Who, what, when, where, why, and how should be addressed in the assessment process and are pivotal in formulating a comprehensive case conceptualization. An accurate comprehensive assessment is...

...Tatrina Bailey Career Counseling-Mid Term Dr. Jill Thompson Prairie View A&M University March 14, 2015 Defend the statement: Career development is a continuous process. Explain how it is a discontinuous process. Career development is a continuous process, which concentrates on the processes of seeking, receiving, and processing the information about one self, educational and occupational alternatives, role options and life style. In other words, career development is the process, which makes people understand themselves in relation to the working field and environments, and the role they play in it (Zunker, 2012). Today, in the 21st century, the world of work is very different form the one it has previously been. Globalization of the job markets and the economy, and rapid advancements in technology create an increased competition. The main focus of the global economy is information generation and delivery of services. The modern world dictates the conditions for the business world, providing continuous outsourcing of work, reduction of companies, and modification of jobs. Due to that, people have temporary and part-time jobs, while a growing number of people are self-employed. Therefore, the majority of careers may be described with such words, as uncertainty, insecurity, unpredictability, work intensification, fewer opportunities for promotion, part-time work, self-employment and non-standard contracts. In this regard, individuals...

...Ethical Dilemma Paper Topic: Identify one or more forms of countertransference that you might struggle with and address how you would deal with this in an ethical and effective manner. Countertransference is defined by Merriam-Webster as a psychological transference especially by a psychotherapist during the course of treatment, the psychotherapist's reactions to the patient's transference, and the complex of feelings of a psychotherapist toward the patient. (Merriam-Webster, 2012) The APA defines countertransference as the conscious or unconscious emotional reaction of the therapist to the patient which may interfere with treatment. (APA, 2012) These definitions provide black and white textbook offerings to the meaning of countertransference, but to experience countertransference firsthand brings the concept to light in an irradiating spectrum of colors and intensity. The APA’s definition captures an event of countertransference as being at both conscious and unconscious levels. I believe it’s imperative to acknowledge that during countertransference, the counselor can be both aware and unaware of their reaction(s) to a client’s appearance, tonality, mannerisms, religion, nationality, etc... In the struggle to maintain objectivity, the counselor is obligated to practice self-awareness and recognize (a) when they may be experiencing countertransference and (b) how they reacted to the countertransference. How can you recognize when you have reacted to countertransference...

...Why I chose to become a mental health counselor Counseling others is a difficult job that requires people to listen, take notes, and respond in ways that are positive and helpful. It is important that trust be built between the counselor and the patient so that the patient will feel comfortable speaking about issues that are private or embarrassing. There are many different types of counselors including drug counselors; marriage counselors, grief counselors, job counselors, diet and exercise counselors, and others that can help people improve their lives in different ways. Counselors are trained to offer advice and listen to issues that may be bothering other people. They are not allowed to prescribe medication or expected to provide medical advice. Approximately 25 percent of North Americans suffer from diagnosable mental health issues each year. With the increasing awareness of the related social, political and economic impacts of these problems, there is a greater need for professional mental health counselors. Additionally, health care insurance providers, driving the demand for more qualified professionals, recognize most mental health counseling. After earning a master's degree in mental health counseling, most people choose to get licensed or certified in a specialty such as: • Rehabilitation counseling • Substance abuse counseling • Marriage and family counseling Mental health counselors work with individuals, groups and communities on a variety of mental health...

...The Effects of Trauma on Clients and Mental Health Counselors Examples of Trauma: For this assignment we were asked to conceptualize two traumatic events to use as examples. One man-made or natural disaster and one personal trauma. The man-made disaster I choose is a mass shooting at a college campus. The personal trauma I choose is a car accident with a family of four which leaves the father dead, but the mother and two children survive. Potential Effects on Survivors: For the survivors of the campus shooting this event may be very traumatizing. A number of survivors may experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Human-caused mass disasters can leave survivors felling vulnerable and questioning their safety in the world. (Shallcross, 2012). The surviving auto accident family members left without a husband and father are going to have to deal with grief and loss. The wife may need to cope with overwhelming responsibility and the children may feel anger and a sense of abandonment. Potential Effects on First Responders: One possible effect on first responders to the scene of both the campus shooting and the family auto accident may be Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). STS presents itself much like PTSD and is caused by viewing others suffer trauma (Baird & Kracen, 2006). The first responders at both trauma sites can be effected greatly even if only at the scene for a short time. According to Baird & Kracen (2006) "the precipitating experience(s)...
