Careful understanding and analysis of the methods employed by modern educational institutions reveal the fact that educational systems have succeeded in imparting the knowledge and skills that are required to face the world. However, in the modern world, educational institutions have a greater responsibility of ensuring that their students pursue fields of study where they are more likely to succeed. This, claim can be better understood if we imagined Roger Federer trying hard to become a lawyer or Henry Ford trying his hand at football! The above chimera may have given a brief insight on the catastrophic effects on the life and career of a person in the wrong field. Therefore, it becomes the added responsibility of educational institutions to help students understand themselves so that they fit in well in this vast jigsaw puzzle of the modern world. Providing counselling services, taking students on educational tours, providing an insight into various professions are some of the ways in which this responsibility can be carried out. It is or common understanding that the number of fields to choose from is very vast in the current setup of the world. In such a situation, students will need guidance while they select their field of study. They will need to be able differentiate between infatuations and genuine interest in a field of study. They will have to overcome their inherent fickle nature in order to take a stable decision which will define their entire life. The shear vastness of the number of fields can be very intimidating to many students and this is exactly where the educational institutions will have to step in and help students to choose a field which is suitable to them. Also, students sometimes loose the enthusiasm in doing a work which they had enjoyed initially. Thus, we can see that the general attrition of enthusiasm can be attributed to the lack of genuine interest on the student's part in the concerned work. The same can happen while choosing a career or a field of study. This can lead to extreme frustration and depression at a point in their life. However, in the setup of an educational institution, teachers can closely observe children and they will be able to understand his qualities and guide him better. This method of close observance and guidance cannot be provided anywhere else but an educational institution. Some students also tend to choose their fields of study based on the decision of their peers or influenced by their parents professions. Through common experience, we can say that such decisions have a very low success rate. By providing the right exposure to students, appropriate counselling and observation, the pernicious effects of such immature acts can be stemmed by educational institutions. Again, I would like to emphasize that there is no better atmosphere than an educational institution to help prevent such situations. Now, antagonists can argue that the above functions can be carried out by parents or by dedicated professional services. But, although these services can help to a certain extent. their decision on what should be the students future field of study will always be inchoate. This is because their decision is based on questionnaire filled by the student or through an exchange of ideas with him. This exposure with a student is not enough to make such a big decision and continuous monitoring as done in school by teachers is very much needed to make a better decision. Therefore, just as imparting quality education is a responsibility of educational institutions, it is also their responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.
