Act 1 scene 1 154-end
Romeo enters the scene oblivious to what has happened. Benvolio can see that something is a matter with Romeo. Romeo says “is the day so young?” Benvolio replies that it is only early Romeo says “Ay me, sad hours seem long.” This illustrates that Romeo is consumed by his emotions ~ the hours are passing so slowly as he is so sad. Romeo says “ Not having that, which, having makes them short” ~ the thing that he is missing would make him happy, therefore would make the day pass quicker. Benvolio questions Romeo is he in or out of love ~ “Out of her favour, where I am in love.” ~ Romeo loves someone who doesn’t love him. Romeo is clearly miserable but he appears to be enjoying his sadness. Romeo becomes aware that there has been a fight this then leads him to express his conflicting emotions in a series of paradoxes ~ “Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms! Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,”. Romeo says ~ “Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here.~” Romeo is not himself. Benvolio offers sympathy which Romeo welcomes as it gives him another opportunity to off-load his plight. Romeo says the love of his life is perfect but Benvolio urges Romeo to look at others ~ “By giving liberty unto thine eyes.Examine other beauties.”
