THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Research about the effect of study habits in the academic performances of students in Technological Institute Of The Philippines (TIP) received the attention from the researchers. Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students work privately. Study habits are defined as those technique such as summarizing, note taking, outlining or locating material which learners employ to assist themselves in the efficient learning of the material which material at hand.

The term “study habits” implies a sort of more or less permanent method of studying. According to Good’s dictionary of education, “Study habits is the the tendency of pupil to study when the opportunities are given, the pupil’s way Research about the effect of study habits in the academic performances of students in Technological Institute Of The Philippines (TIP) received the attention from the researchers. Study habits are learning tendencies that enable students work privately. Study habits are defined as those technique such as summarizing, note taking, outlining or locating material which learners employ to assist themselves in the efficient learning of the material which material at hand.

The term “study habits” implies a sort of more or less permanent of studying whether systematic or unsystematic, efficient or inefficient.

Another, Azikiwe (1998) described the study habits as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings after classroom learning so as to attain mastery of the subject”. According to her, “Good study habits are good assets to learners beacause they (habits) assists students to attain mastery in areas of specialization and consequence excellent performances, while opposite constitute constraints to learning and achievement leading to failure.” In TIP, there are so many factors that can influence the ability of students to cultivate effective and efficient study habits, such factors that are capable of influencing the academic performances of college students are state of health, motivation, anxiety in their environment, adequacy of infrastructure like textbooks and well-equipped libraries.

Nuthana and Yunagi ( 2009) have examined the causes of poor academic performances among university undergraduates. Some of these factors identified are intellectual, poor study habits, achievement motivation, lack of vocational goals, low socio-economics, status of the family structure and some. For instance a students consistently fails or perform poorly in his examination presumably may develop low self-concept and may lack confidence to study or pass.

Statement of the Problem

Due to the increasing nature of poor academic performances of college students especially in their monthly examination like Preliminary, Mid-departmental and Departmental. Many educationist tend to shift the blame on the teaching, methodology adopted by the teacher.

The study examine the effect of study habits on the students academic performances:
1. What are some guide to asses the student’s study habits?
2. What is the difference in academic performance between the students who developed study habits and those students who do not have study habits?
3. What are some factors influencing student’s study habits?

Significance of the Sudy
These are the group of people that will benefit from this study:
First Year Civil Engineering Students- to attempt to combine study skilss with study habits and how they both affect in their academic performance.
Researchers- to have experience and to know how to carry out research in related fields.
Professors- to improve their teaching skills and methodology of teaching their students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses in the effect of the study habits on the academic performances of the freshmen civil engineering students in TIP SY: 2014-1015 by giving self-evaluation questionnaire.

The study will not cover the deeper topic of the study and will not cover all students od TIP due to the lack of resources.
