...Volume 1 The Student Journal for Media Literacy Education is published twice each year, and includes articles by undergraduate college students studying media literacy. Social Media Impact and Implications on Society By Nick Pernisco, SJMLE Editor In the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on usercreated content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. Thanks to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. This issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education aims to explore some of the issues related to social media, and a generation fully engaged in this interactive world. The main focus is popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn, but other social networking sites are explored as well. All articles in the Journal have been written by college students in Santa Monica College’s Reading The Media course in Spring 2010, under my supervision. The students selected from a list of topic related to current issues in social media. I reviewed all...

...Chapter 1 The Problem and Its Settings Introduction The surge in popularity of social media in recent years has changed how we use the internet. But most importantly, how we study and how we learn. Social media has given us the ability to share ideas, feelings, and information at unbelievable speed. We can now communicate faster and wither greater efficiency with our lecturers and professors. Students can utilize social media by posting and sharing notes and lectures online, or watch a video pertaining to yesterday’s history class. Social media is not just limited to students, but many professors are now communicating with their students and peers via online. But social media is so much more. It enables students to attend lectures and classes who are half way around the world through the use of social media. It also allows professors and students to conduct meetings online. Currently, there are still many who oppose the idea of using social media as a tool for learning and studying. Regardless, many believe that technology is a vital part of today’s student success in the classroom. Many parents believe that the traditional learning styles is the way to go and that social media is just a distraction and may lead to procrastination. Background of the study The researchers were persuaded to conduct a study on the effects of social media in the study habits of junior nursing students in relation to academic performance. ...ONLINE DISINHIBITION EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AGED 18 to 24 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Today’s world involves the extensive use of technology where the general public depends on electronic devices and computers increasingly on a daily basis. Online communication frameworks are the increase with fleeting usage rates and growth. Social media is the predominant medium in online communication. According to Reaney, sixtytwo percent of people who are connected online, communicate through social media websites (Reuters, 2012). These social media platforms have become suitable for Internet users who can connect virtually anywhere through their smart phones, laptops, or home computers. Communicating through this medium has it own fair share of ramifications. A certain phenomenon that has the characteristics of social media users is the online disinhibition effect. Online disinhibition effect a loosening (or complete abandonment) of social restrictions and is inhibitions that would otherwise be present in normal facetoface interaction during interactions with others on the Internet. The six main factors of this effect include dissociative anonymity, invisibility, asynchronicity, solipsistic introjection, dissociative imagination, and minimization of authority. Dissociative ...

...influence of social networking sites on high school students' social and academic development Dissertation Author: June Ahn Abstract: This dissertation examines the effects of social network sites on youth social and academic development. First, I provide a critical analysis of the extant research literature surrounding social network sites and youth. I merge scholarly thought in the areas of Internet studies, digital divides, social capital theory, psychological well-being, identity development, academic engagement, and educational technology to understand how researchers might examine new social technologies and youth. Second, I examine the question of digital divide, or whether particular teenage populations do not have access to online social networks. Using a nationally representative dataset from the Pew Internet & American Life study, I explore whether there are disparities in teenage access to social network sites. Third, I report a cluster-randomized trial that was designed to explore whether social network sites have a beneficial impact when used in high school classrooms. A total of 50 classrooms, and nearly 1,400 students were randomly assigned to use an experimental social network site. The results highlight the challenges and potential of this technology when applied to school contexts. iii Table of Contents Acknowledgements i i List of Tables i v Abstract v Chapter 1 : Introduction 1 Chapter 2: The Effect of Social Network Sites on Adolescents’ Social and Academic...

...numbers of individuals into distinct communities over the Internet (O’Reilly, 2007). Social networking sites (SNS) are online communities designed to connect individuals to wider networks of relationships, and are one major example of Web 2.0 applications. Sites such as Facebook have exploded in membership. In a short period of 2007 – 2010, Facebook estimates that its membership has grown from 50 million to over 400 million users (Facebook, n.d.). Online social networks are now an integrated part of daily life and compel questions of how these media platforms affect human development, relationships, and interaction. Teenagers are among the most avid users of technology in general and social network sites in particular (Lenhart, Madden, Macgill, & Smith, 2007b). Recent reports find that youth spend nearly 10 hours per day using some form of technology, with socially networked media playing a large role in their daily lives (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). New technologies are deeply intertwined with adult perceptions about teenage life. Mimi Ito and colleagues observe that, “Although today’s questions about ‘kids these days’ have a familiar ring to them, the contemporary version is somewhat unusual in how strongly it equates generational identity with technology identity” The clear finding is that today’s youth are increasingly connected to the world through socially networked media. While teenagers are engaged with technology, they are ever more disengaged from another...

...May 3, 2013 Mark Emmert, NCAA President P.O. Box 6222 Indianapolis, IN 46206 RE: Policy on Social Media use by Student Athletes Dear Mr. Emmert, The object of this letter is to provide you with a much needed policy on the education of proper use of social media by student athletes. It is very important that student athletes understand the effects that improper social media use can have on, not only themselves, but the college they represent, that way they can understand the importance behind this suggested policy. I’m sure you are aware of the increasing usage of social media by society, including student athletes. I hope you will take my policy into consideration helping to educate all student athletes on smart usage of social media. I would like to start off with defining social media as: “Web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.” (Boyd and Ellison) Over the past decade social media has created a boom of excitement throughout the cyber world. With the creation of Facebook, Twitter, and many more social networks, society has become increasingly dependent on social media. Social media is used in a variety of ways. For some it is used as a means of conducting business, rather it be used for advertisements and marketing...

...The Social Media Effect by Aryn LipNicki (link: http://arynlipnicki.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/the-social-media-effect) Personal Satisfaction - the largest negative effect of social media is the fact that studies have shown that Facebook actually makes us less satisfied with our own lives. The cause for this seems to be that we have a tendency to share only positive things in our life on social media, but not the negatives. As a result, we present a utopian picture of our lives to the outside world, despite what the reality may be. I don’t think it is always a conscious decision to do this, we just simply choose not to share the more challenging aspects of our lives with the world at large, often saving that for those closest to us. This is completely understandable, but from the receiving side of things, we are only seeing great things happening in our peers’ lives. Then also consider the increased magnitude of people from whom we see regular updates, compared to in the past. There is a big difference between hearing the good news from your dozen close friends, and hearing about all of the positive things that happen in the lives of your 140 Facebook friends. Suddenly we are constantly being bombarded with updates as people get engaged, married, have kids, buy houses, get job promotions, take amazing vacations – it can all be a bit overwhelming. My takeaway from all this: realistically this isn’t something that is going to change, but try to keep in mind the effect as you use...
