Effective communication is essential to everyday tasks as a carer or support worker. This is because it helps me better understand the needs of the people I care for and to provide the best and most dignifying care to them. Good communication also assists in building relationships with the service users, supervisors, and colleagues at work.

As part of my work, I follow care plans made by a combination of professionals who are person specific to make sure care is in line with expectations. In this care plan, the best way to communicate with each service user is well spelled out. The preferred communication style and preference, together with any alternatives available. This will aid in passing across information to the service user and intended …show more content…
Body language, demeanor, posture, or tone of voice are also of importance as this can be interpreted to be of a friendly or hostile motive. The use of clear language or jargon can be a barrier to effective communication. Clear and non-ambiguous. No use of slags can confuse the client and make information easy to understand.

The environment is also important as a very noisy room can affect the hearing and assimilation of words used. For others, impairments can make it difficult to hear and understand, as one might need to stay within proximity to be heard. Feedback is another important factor as feedback received confirms if the information passed across is understood or needs to be amended to be understood.
