Having the skill of being able to communicate effectively is essential for any business. It is important that an employer be able to communicate with its employees as well as employees with each other, because communication can set the climate for the work environment. With good communication everyone understands what the objectives and missions are for the company and are more likely to increase productivity. Without it, things can fall apart and create confusion and decrease the overall performance of the workers and also the company as a whole. But first we need to know that for communication to be effective, everyone including the sender and the receiver must be open minded, honest, respectable, and receptive to the whole process. The speaker should be able to deliver a message that is clearly stated and well understood. The audience must in return be able to actively listen to the speaker and seek clarity if questions should arise without trying to undermine the speaker creating hostility. If these things don’t happen then bad communication occurs and then barriers are built and the message gets distorted leaving the listeners to draw their own conclusions. Once a month I have to attend a manager’s meeting for the APS Nutrition Department. This meeting is conducted by our area’s cluster Foodservice Manager. Every month without fail these meetings start out trying to communicate what has been done and what needs to be done for each of our units to be successful. By the time these meetings end, most of the managers leave with more questions than answers. The way that this particular Foodservice Manager conducts these meeting lets me know that he has not mastered the art of effective
