Effective Leadership Within the Nursing Community

The changes that are occurring in our health care system today require progressively more nurses to take leadership roles. An effective leader is someone who is able to inspire others. Cherry and Jacob state they, “…may not have formal authority granted by their organization but are still able to influence others.” (p.335) With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) drawing near, the need for more nurses and health care professionals to take on leadership roles is essential. Having effective leadership is what promotes teams to work at their maximum abilities. An article found in the Annals of Family Medicine states, “the movement to accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes will accelerate and increase the emphasis on teams in healthcare.” (Taplin, Foster, & Shortell, 2013) As our health care system enters into a difficult time period facing some of the highest costs and most severe health care professional shortage, we are in dire need of innovative leaders who will help develop plans that will raise patient outcomes.
Leadership Defined There are many different definitions of the term leadership. According to Neuman, Newman, and Holder (2000) leadership is defined as “the ability to identify and manipulate factors significant to the successful pursuit of improved healthcare.” (Neuman et al., 2000) A leader within the nursing community has the ability to influence their team members to provide optimal care to their patients. A leader will guide others to accomplish common goals while stimulating young nurses to excel. “For positive socialization such as mentoring to flourish, and for the nursing profession to reach its greatest potential, RNs [Registered Nurses] need to be proactive and find ways to facilitate professional and individual growth-producing workplace strategies.” (Huston, 2013, p.130) To summarize, to be an

Additional responsibilities, growing demands of higher education, and increased job requirements have resulted in an exceptionally complex practice for the modern nurse. In order to meet these higher demands, the committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published a report containing recommendations to aid and enhance the future of nursing practice. This report contains four main key points. 1. Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. 2. Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. 3. Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. 4.
