Effective Time Management
Pursuing my degree is one of the best decisions of my life, but there have been some issues in accomplishing it. The biggest issue, because I chose to go to school later in life, is effective time management. With family, a full-time job, and school responsibilities, there isn’t much time available for anything else including sleep. In order to accomplish my goal, I need to learn how to effectively manage my time.
The problem with learning how to manage my time is how I can learn the techniques and where do I find quality information on the subject of time management. There was an unlimited amount of information on the web and also great information in the University of Phoenix Library. I used Google Scholar to find some really good information as well as time management assessments to better help with a solution. I have to find information that is effective and has been tested or proven to work. There are many proven ways to manage time, but you have to select the one that best works for your situation and your lifestyle. I believe that the best information comes from the people who are professionals on the subject or have been in your position and overcome it.
I know that in order to manage my time effectively, I need to overcome procrastination. I know that it is a problem and it needs to be addressed. According to Rick Johnson, CEO of Strategist LLC, procrastination is the breeding ground for incompetence. I believe that to be true and that’s why I need to conquer it. Rick Johnson also says, referring to procrastination, “If we don't learn to conquer it, we will not maximize our effectiveness and become everything we can be. I will not be able to conquer procrastinating without learning and executing effective time management.
In order to manage your time successfully, having an awareness of what your goals are will help you manage your activities. I have short term goals and long term goals that I have to work towards. If I don’t accomplish my short term goals, there is no way to accomplish the long term goals. I have to develop a plan that will allow me to accomplish my daily activities as well as my short and long term goals.
There are many strategies to effective time management and the research is endless so you have to choose something that you think will work best for you. My research led me to the Virginia Tech website (http://www.ucc.vt.edu/) where I found an assessment of time management and instructions on how to better manage time as a college student. This was very helpful because it relates to college students who have work responsibilities and other obstacles that my get in the way of school assignments. I listened to an 85 minute seminar by Randy Pausch that was very informational, but I didn’t feel like that information helped me as much as the Virginia Tech website. Like I said previously, there are countless strategies that you can find through research, but you have to pick the one that best works for you.
According to COOK COUNSELING CENTER (1994), there are four strategies that can be very useful for managing time more effectively. They are: Create a semester schedule, assess and plan your work load each week, adjust your plan each day, and evaluate your schedule. This time management system walked me through each step of establishing an effective time management system and if I follow it, I believe that it will work well for me. According to the Time Management Quiz (COOK COUNSELING CENTER, 1994), I have 20 hours a week to complete my homework each week. This is more than enough time to do homework and I just need to schedule it correctly. There was some very good information available on the web and in the campus library to help me with effective time management. I have a Blackberry that I never put down that is equipped with a calendar that I can use to schedule everything in my day to day life and it will even notify me when things are due. If I use the tools that I have found to manage my time effectively, I should feel less rushed and be able to complete my assignments along with all of the other responsibilities in my life. In conclusion, Randy Pausch said, “Time is all we have. You may find one day that you have less than you think.”

Effective Time Management

...Time management has been a problem for many people, and I find that this is true for me. Because I am a stay at home mother of four children, a wife, and a full time student, I always have a lot to do at all times. Finding time to complete all of my tasks, whether it be helping the children with their homework, doctor appointments, meal planning, shopping and preparing meals, cleaning up after the myriad of messes that always seem to occur, or trying to get my own homework done, there never seems to be enough time to get it all done well. I find myself thinking, “What is more important: homework or laundry?” Homework always wins, which creates a backlog of laundry. My hope with this research paper is to find a way to manage my time so effectively that I’m able to not only complete all of my tasks, but to actually have a little time for myself budgeted in. In considering the problem, I had to consider the source. Why is it so difficult for me to manage my time effectively? What is getting in my way, and how might I change it? After evaluating the problem, I came to the conclusion that an overall lack of focus is my greatest challenger. I tend to do things on the fly as they come at me rather than carefully planning for them and executing the plan. Without a detailed plan for each day, I tend to begin a task only to get distracted by another. By blocking out a portion of the day for one specific task, I will gain the focus I currently lack. In researching for...

Time Management

...Time Management Time Management To begin, it is possible to state that time management is a technology which helps to organize time in the most effective way. Moreover, time management system allows people not only to be more productive in organizing their time, but also not miss something very important. According to different sources, the first attempt to develop a system of time management was made by a Roman philosopher, statesman and poet Lucius Annaeus Seneca in the first decade of the new era. Of course, Seneca’s attempts were different from modern approach to time management, but they were also important for people in ancient times. So, it becomes obvious that people from the early beginning of our civilization tried to organize their time and to spend it in the more efficient way. Today the organization of time is considered in close connection with the lifestyle of the person as a tool for maximal realization of the personal potential according with the values, world view and outlook of the person. We consider the mission of the human being as a prerequisite for the formation of the purposes, goals - as a subject for equipment with criteria, values - as a basis for prioritization, and thirst for self-development - as the primary motivator. Of course, according to Van Eerde (2003), it can be stated that the one who does nothing needs no discipline.
