...Writing Essays by Eleanor Wakefield There are several vital elements to any successful college essay. This handout will define those elements and show you how to put them together using an outline. Following this format will help you keep your thoughts organized and get your essay underway. Elements of an Essay Introduction: Usually an introduction starts broad and narrows down to your specific topic, ending in the thesis. This is your opportunity to establish why readers might be curious about your general topic, catch their attention, or put your essay in context. Thesis: Your introduction should end with a clear, specific thesis statement, which will tell readers exactly what your paper will be arguing. Each body paragraph will directly and obviously support your thesis. Body Paragraphs: An essay usually has at least three body paragraphs, and these will be the arguments, evidence, or topics that support your thesis. Topic Sentences: Each body paragraph will begin with a topic sentence which introduces its topic. All of the information in that paragraph will be clearly and logically related to that topic sentence, which in turn should obviously relate to the thesis. Support: You use arguments, data, facts, analysis, quotes, anecdotes, examples, details, etc. to support your topic sentences and flesh out your body paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to have at least three points to support each topic sentence. Transitions: An effective essay will show the connection between...

...Perspective of the UIC High School Students on the Effects of a Limited Range of Allowance on their Performance in School Introduction: Opening Statement Monetary allowance contributes to our every action. As students, its uses extend to much more than basic essentials for everyday living. It is observable that the amount of allowance the students need to comply with the demands of the school increases as their degree or level of education increases. With this, the researchers have reason to study on whether their allowance range affects their performance in school or not in their own perspective. Originally, the investment of parents in students’ allowance was expected to make them grow old independently, to develop their skills in managing their budget, to build financial literacy. However, a survey by 2000 Jump$tart in the United States of America found 52.5 %, who didn’t receive an unconditional allowance while growing up, received the highest score in financial literacy while those who received an unconditional allowance had the lowest financial literacy rate of 49.1%. This meant that those who weren’t given an unconditional allowance had more knowledge about savings, spending, and credit. The lack of understanding on the said factors could be rooted to the cause of abusiveness being practiced by the students which includes acts that are considered detrimental to the concentration of students in school like addictive gaming, foolish acquisitions, excessive purchases...

...Nichole Jacob, Arielle Dominic Submitted to: Ma’am Steph Raval I. Introduction Recently, we’ve noticed that students spend most of their time doing recreational activities. They are convinced that we should enjoy the last days of our high school life. This research will help understand the connection between their temptations—internet, social-networking sites, TV, movies, and music—and their studies. II. The Statement of the Problem Our focus is about the study habits of the students of SLCV—particularly of St. Vincent. We noticed that they are always out to entertain themselves, and that usually concerns the amount of allowance they are given. We want to know: How are the grades they receive when they don’t really spend a certain amount of time studying? How much allowance do they receive? Where do students spend their allowance? These are the questions we want to answer through our research. III. The Significance of the Study A majority in our community are unemployed. Those are usually the ones who went easy along when they were in their last years of schooling. This research will help in pointing out the students who will need more focus in their grades, and in the process, discover new methods of motivation for them to better discipline themselves into putting more work into their studies. IV. Theoretical Framework Some of the theories we based this research on: The first is, we observe that students are convinced that since they have made it...

...children allowances developed in the early twentieth century when children's purchases of movie tickets, candy, and toys raised concerns about their spending habits. During the Progressive Era (1890s–1920s), allowance advocates recommended giving children a regular but fixed supply of money to inculcate respect for money. Child had endorsed allowances to encourage benevolence and fiscal responsibility. Progressive-era child-rearing authorities joined a much larger chorus calling for new money training regimes in women's magazines and parental advice literature (Child, L.M., 1831). However, despite the benefits gained by the students of having allowance, there are problems and disadvantages present. For example, a student has poor spending habits. They tend to think that this is their money and they can do whatever they want with it. Students have the tendency to spend their allowances on their recreational activities such as, renting a computer unit for fun and games, buying items at the shopping mall, and spending money for the peers. As a study, the proponents seek the effects in line with the daily allowances of students to their academic performance. Statement of the Problem 1. What is the academic performance of the Second year students of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Financial Management A.Y. 2012 – 2013 in the University of the Immaculate Conception? 2. ...1 THE ECONOMIC MOTIVES FOR CHILD ALLOWANCES: ALTRUISM, EXCHANGE OR VALUE OF INDEPENDENCE? Lisa Farrell*, Paul Frijters** and Michael A. Shields* * Department of Economics, University of Melbourne, Australia ** Tinbergen Institute, Free University Amsterdam, Netherlands August 2002 (preliminary draft) Abstract This paper looks inside the “black box” of the family and examines the determinants of inter vivos transfers in the form of allowances given to children. We consider in a simple model two main competing explanations for the transfer of money from parents to children in the form of regular allowances, namely altruism and exchange. We also extend the altruism framework to include unobserved child heterogeneity in monetary autonomy or the 'value of independence'. We use a unique dataset drawn from the British Family Expenditure Survey, which enables us to explicitly test both the inter-generational predictions of the various models, and through a study of siblings, we are also able to consider the intra-household aspects of such payments. Using both random (inter-household) and fixed-effect (intra-household) estimators, we find robust evidence of an nshape relationship between a child's external income and the receipt of allowances from parents. Importantly, this estimated profile does not fit the predications of simple models of altruism or exchange, but does fit an altruism model with unobserved heterogeneity. Further support for the importance of the value of independence...

...TAXATION. Name: Institution: A) Effect of Taxation. Taxation is a system of levying taxes on various types of earnings, income and/or purchases. It is an essential part of a modern state whereby the government obtains revenue, which is used for provision of education, health care and living benefits to a range of its citizens (Sullivan 2003). The UK tax system has several incompatible objectives, for instance redistribution of income and wealth creation (through tax breaks). The government must take into account the issue of fairness in taxation, if it is to provide an acceptable tax system in the United Kingdom (Wales 2008). The social function of taxation is to ensure that there is wealth redistribution, in order to create a fair and harmonious society. According to Adam Smith, fairness in taxation promotes morality and equity in free market economics (Sullivan 2003). Fairness in taxation ensures that market failures are tackled. A fair tax regime ensures that the revenue collected is shared equitably and appropriately through judicious expenditure. According to Adam Smith, equity in taxation implies that the taxpayers pay taxes that are proportionate to their income, while the allocation of government resources does not adhere to this proportionality. A fair tax has the following four attributes: equity, efficiency, certainty and convenience. Equity ensures that the tax has a reasonable impact on the taxpayers. Equity is categorized into two forms: horizontal...
