Years ago in the 1950s divorces were frowned upon. Very rarely did people hear about a couple getting a divorced. Many people considered divorce as a mark of personal failure. As years have gone by and society has changed in many different ways, divorce has become socially accepted in today’s society. Divorce is no longer considered a taboo. With divorce, different people are affected by it. Obviously the family members are the ones affected the most by this decision. But one group of family members that will always be affected, especially in the long run, are the kids. There are many causes of divorce today. There’s the fact that individualism is increasing and becoming a trend. Many people are so use to being on their own that when they have someone else in their lives that they also have to take care of, they’re not use to the adjustment (Society the Basics, pg. 386). Especially with the rise of independence women now have in today’s society, they no longer need a man to depend on. Women are more independent and are now able to support themselves. With the rise of women independency, divorces are now happening due to this. Some men aren’t use to being married to a dominant woman. Divorces involving children usually affect the child more than most people think. The kids are always at crossroads when it comes to making decisions involving parents. They feel like they are torn in two. “By not taking sides they fear disapproval or rejection by both (Mackenzie, Caroline www).” There are many other types of emotional effects kids will feel when it comes to divorce. Some kids will start to get the feeling of rejection if one parent leaves and walks out on the family. As they get older, the kid affected by the divorce, begin to feel like they can’t trust other people. They also have the fear of

...decided live together which we called marriage. Nevertheless, certain couples are incapable to keep a good relationship and end up in a divorce, which is one of the answers to deal with problems between mothers and fathers. Most people think sensibly before they think about marriage. However, the rate of people getting divorces has increasing very rapidly these days. It could be argued that divorces can be easier today than in twenty years ago. The three main causes of divorce are stress, lack of communication and women changing roles in the household. The primary thing that has caused a recent increase in divorces is women changing roles in the home. Years ago, men went out and earn the income to support the family. Women only stayed at home doing housework earning no money solely depending on their spouse paycheck. This cause most women to separate from their spouses. However, these circumstances entirely change in today world. The equal opportunity among men and women in roles are clear at the moment. Women now can work and earn money, while men can stay home doing household tasks such as cleaning, washing clothes, cooking and taking care of the children. It can be plainly seen that women are self-determining from money as they can earn income by themselves to provide for their families Another cause of the latest increase in divorces is stress in the home environment and workplace. Countless people, who live in the world, have significant pressures to make money. For...

The Effects of Divorce on Children and Adults

...The effects of divorce on children and adults Name: Institution: God as a parent: I agree with this notion. God displays parental roles in various ways. God cares for people. Even though this is preeminently demonstrated in the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ numerous other biblical passages highlight the caring nature of God (Luke: 11-32). God is responsive to the human needs this can be observed in the convent which was established after the flood (Gen.9:8-17), in the rescue of Israel from Egypt, and in the free offer of restoration and mercy (John3:16). God bestows the richness on us-the only begotten son and the Holy Spirit as comforter. God shows respect for, values and cherishes us; there is not attempt to dominate, and individuals are given the freedom of being themselves. God knows human populaces, for Jesus came in human likeness; this knowledge penetrates to the core of individual’s existence. God forgives as is evident n Mathew 26:28, and John3:16. God disciplines the human populaces (Prov, 3:11-12, Revelation, 3:19) (Balswick & Judith, 2007). The discipline of Israel can be observed as an attempt of creating a faithful and obedient people. The bible taken as a whole focuses on the love and grace of God that he freely gives. Nonetheless, this unconditional love is not free of expectations and demands. God’s love entail disciplinary actions for the individuals own rectitude; His love as a parent bears a striking similarity to the parenting style...

..., Social Problems Ella Cooke November 16, 2014 Prof: Cynthia Palmer Divorce I think a children growing up we all have that fantasy that we are going to meet our prince charming, live in a big house with a picket fence, and have maids and butlers to wait on us hand and foot. Now, I am not saying that some of these fantasies do not come true for some, but for the majority they are just fantasies. Do people really know what they are getting into when they repeat that two letter word “I do”? Do not get the impression that getting married is a bad idea, because there are couples I know today that are still going strong after 60 plus years. Marriage is a huge commitment that should be taken seriously, and you have to work together as a team. Divorce happens more often times than not and it can take a serious toll on everyone in the family especially the kids. I chose the social problem of divorce for two reasons, one of them is because I have been through it twice myself, and the other is we have a high divorce rate in this nation. I married my first husband when I was 17, and straight out of high school. We had 3 beautiful children at which time he became very controlling and verbally abusive so we divorced in 2006. Well, I turned right around and got remarried in May 2006, the very year I was divorced from the first one. Well, long story short, we are separated and are drawing up divorce papers so I have quite of bit of experience with this social problem. People ask...

Divorce

...the Causes and Effects of Divorce Nancy Marie Brown January 1, 2002 "In the 1970s, divorce escalated like crazy. Women were entering the labor force in incredible numbers. Are those two things related," asks Alan Booth, "or aren't they? "And if divorce is not related to women working, what is it related to?" Booth, a Penn State sociologist, has been asking that question for 20 years. He himself has been divorced and remarried in the meantime, as has his co-investigator on the National Longitudinal Study of Marriage, Paul Amato. More to the point, they and their colleagues have amassed hours of survey data on 2,000 married men and women, interviewed by telephone, paper, or computer survey up to six times over the 20 years, "through a whole marital history, if you like," says Amato. "Some people in the study are on their third or fourth marriages. We've followed them through divorce, singlehood, and remarriage." They've also interviewed many of their children. Then in 2000, the research team interviewed a completely new random sample of 2,100 married individuals. "So we can look at two different kinds of change," Amato explains: "How individual marriages change over time, and how the population of married couples has changed between 1980 and 2000." Their results are changing the way people think about marriage and divorce, and particularly about the effects of divorce on children. "I think it's our study," says Booth, "that put the capstone on the idea that divorce can be bad for...

...you ever thought how your divorce will effect your kids? It seems today that there are no affects on kids for divorce parents, since there are a lot of couples who get divorce and the authorities are playing a big part of helping those kids. BUT, it is not quite true. Although it is ‘popular’ and those kids gets help, there are some unavoidable effects. Loneliness, embarrassment and decrease of confidence, fear of marriage and feeling of blame, are some of the affects. A child of divorced parents feels lonely sometimes. The fact that parents are occupied most of the time with their divorce process makes them be less aware of what is going on with their kids. The nature of a child is to seek for attention and love from his’ her parents. There fore, it creates a feeling of loneliness that the kid is carrying with him during that period. Embarrassment, from the child’s point of view, is another effect. Even though now days we find a lot of divorced couples, it is still, in come countries and societies, a shame. Therefore, the kid has a feeling of anxiety and embarrassment. Moreover, it also leads to isolation and decrease in confident since the kid feels an outsider. “Marriage” is a scary word for some of those kids. Kids who grow up in a ‘home’ where marriage was unsuccessful, will be afraid of getting married in the future. The fear of having the same experiences feelings in the future creates a rejection about the marriage subject. Those kids will be afraid of experiencing...

Divorce

... 1 Divorce John Smith SOC/100 – Introduction to Sociology April 21st, 2011 Professor Deidra Powell-Wallace DIVORCE 2 Divorce In today’s society, the most important matter is family. For most people, family is the primary reason people strive to do well. Family is the most instrumental and influential aspect in many people’s lives. But similar to how every hero has a villain, there is something that can dismantle a family’s bond or relationship so easily, and that is divorce. Divorce is something that some people have no problem with, but for most people it can have such a great effect and after it happens people are never the same. In today’s society divorce can happen for many reasons, but how can we fix it? In some cases divorce is necessary, for example if the relationship between the couple is unhealthy and one or neither person can stay committed, then divorce would be the appropriate action, but when neither person can stay committed to the other then those people should not have gotten married in the first place. According to a blog writer that goes by the name land mammal from writing.com says, “If there is a physically or emotionally abusive spouse belonging to the marriage it may be pertinent to resolve such an issue through means of divorce for example. However, the conditions which are used to justify divorce in a marriage...

Divorce Affecting Children

...Markman English Composition 18 March 2015 The Affects Divorce Has on Children “But in the real world, you couldn’t really just split a family down the middle, mom on one side, dad the other, with the child equally divided between. It was like when you ripped a piece of paper into two: no matter how you tried, the seams never fit exactly right again. It was what you couldn't see, those tiniest of pieces, that were lost in the severing, and their absence kept everything from being complete.” - Sarah Dessen Throughout the United States divorce has increasingly risen in the past years. “In 2000, 49% of US marriages ended in divorce” (Gianoulis). Children everywhere are becoming the products of broken families; caught in between a mommy and daddy, when before, there was no choice. Before, all there was was comfort, familiarity and stability. Although divorce may seem like the best option in an unhappy situation, the affects on the children’s emotional state can be harmful. These effects are emotionally, psychological, academically, socially, and economically damaging. To begin, in a study by Laumann-Billings and Emery they found that children of divorce suffer emotionally. This allows for new generations of broken families to be made. The saying “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree” would apply. In the article, Divorce by Brackett and Woolly, the authors say approximately 400,000 of the estimated million cases of divorce a year result in children being “emotionally disturbed...

Impact of Divorce on Children

...Impact of Divorce on Children Today in society, it is not unusual for a kid to know a friend whose parents are divorced or currently going through the process. It is more and more common for couples these days to separate after years of marriage than it was back in the day. Many adults, however, do not realize the consequences that can come from this when their kids are involved. Dealing with their parents' divorce is not easy for some and can highly affect the way a kid performs in school. Such a huge change in their life can cause health problems that can be life threatening and dangerous. The whole situation is extremely stressing and it leads to the use of drug abuse sometimes in order to find peace. These problems arise when a kid does not know how to deal with the divorce or are having a hard time with it because their parents are also having a difficult time. Parents should make sure they do everything in their power to make sure the divorce process goes easy and smooth and unpainful for everyone, especially the kids; they tend to suffer more out of everyone and can be severely affected by it if the situation isn not handled well by both parents. Dealing with change has a different effect on people. Some take it well, while some simply cannot deal with it. Children are known not to handle change very well, especially when it does not go the way they wanted it to. When dealing with their parent's separation, they tend to go through a bunch of emotions. Some may even...

Lessen the Impact of Divorce

...LESSEN THE IMPACT OF DIVORCE Michael Jennings DeVry University Lessen the Impact of Divorce Charlie is 9 years old and lives in a single parent home where the parent works to support the family, where not much time is spent with Charlie, who must figure certain things out on his own.  Where does Charlie go after school?  If no one is home having Charlie home alone is not a very good option.  If siblings or friends are there but, no adult is present during the after school hours, home is still not a very good option.  The term “latch-key” kid is one who has their own key to their home and is expected to be home with minimal supervision.  Once a child reaches a certain responsible age, being a latch-key kid often makes sense.  Charlie must get home safe from school, stay out of trouble, and complete his homework, with little to no adult supervision.  After-school activities should be available to Charlie because he may not be responsible enough or his parents may not trust him to be home alone yet. Everyone is affected by the consequences of parental divorce, especially the children involved.  In any society, the children are the future.  In the United States alone, 40 to 50% of first marriages end in divorce, according to the American Psychological Association.  As citizens of the United States, we are all stakeholders of our future and should care about the well-being of all our children, especially those of disadvantaged environments such as parental divorce.  Additional resources...

Divorce

...Valeria Obando Professor Fonts ENC 1102-2 4 December 2013 Until Divorce Do Us Part Divorce is defined as the legal termination of a marriage, but in its real sense there is a lot more to it than just the end of a relationship. Nowadays many marriages end in divorce, and surprisingly most of them end in their early stages. If divorce rates goes up, people’s level of tension and hesitation about marriage is also increasing. The society accepts divorce very easily and even suggests it as a solution to the trivial problems faced in a husband-wife relationship. Therefore marriages and family life are at risk. If divorce continues to rise in even roughly the same pattern, the traditional sense of marriage might as well become extinct. To add to the existing problem, various law firms and websites provoke divorce through various methods such as advertising the benefits of divorce or by offering customized divorce forms online. The soaring divorces are not just questioning the importance of relationships and ties but they are also creating severe after effects in the life and family of the divorcees. Laws should be reformed to make it harder to obtain a divorce because it would help prevent any emotional, financial, and psychological repercussions. Though divorce at an individual level is a liberating factor for estranged couples, the problem arises when the divorce affects the kids. The author states: “Numerous studies indicate that children of divorced families face increased...

Divorce Essay

...Introduction For a child, choosing sides between parents is no doubt overwhelming. The fear of showing more love or affection towards one or the other creates an inconceivable level of stress. There are many children faced with this dilemma every day. Divorce rates are on the rise, and the sacred union of marriage is not what it used to be; leaving children caught in the middle. Divorce has an effect on everyone involved and can be emotionally and physically draining on a family. Hurt feelings and anger often take precedence over doing what is truly best for the kids. There is also the aspect of children being raised in dysfunctional households that can have dire consequences. So the question is should a couple stay married only for the sake of children? Position 1 Parents should avoid divorce and make every attempt to endure the marriage when children are involved. Divorce is typically a difficult life changing event for children. Children sometimes feel that they are to blame for the breakdown of the family unit. They often have to face the real with the possibility of having to relocate or change schools. The family environment that they have become accustomed to with both parents is in jeopardy. A review of marriage research released in a 2005 journal published by the Brookings Institution and Princeton University suggested that children from two-parent families are better off emotionally, socially and economically. This suggests that the family unit is much...

...Should parents stay together for the kids? More than 50% of marriages end in divorce. The question many struggling parents face is, should we stay together for the kids? Some decide that sacrificing their own happiness by staying in an unhappy marriage is needed to help ensure their children's happiness. Others decide to split because they don't want their children to learn that staying in an unhealthy marriage is "normal." In my opinion staying in an unhealthy relationship has negative effects of the children. The reasons being are it causes an unhealthy environment for the children, it causes long term emotional issues, and it sets a bad example for what love is. Parents need to consider what is best for the kids. Research shows that kids who grow up in an emotionally barren, abusive environment don't do as well as kids who grow up with one well-adjusted, single parent. An unhealthy marriage causes an unhealthy environment. An unhealthy environment usually includes yelling or fighting. This cause stress on children and your problems also become theirs. If the parents are being abusive towards one another divorce would also benefit the children. When parents get a divorce they are usually happier. The less stress allows them to spend more quality time with their children, and the family can become happy again. The children will be able to be a kid again. Countless studies prove that children growing up with parents in an unhappy marriage cause long term emotional...

Divorce

...Does Divorce Have Devastating Impacts on Children? Divorce is a hard pill to swallow no matter what age a child is. Children are like sponges they soak up everything. The immediate impacts that divorce has on children are loneliness, fear and worry, sadness, anger, guilt, and the feeling of being rejected (Riggs & Tweedell 2010). The long term effects are a child’s social development meaning maintaining friendships may become hard especially ones with the opposite sex, which in the end can lead to a lot of unhealthy relationships because children are trying to fill a void that was once there. Not only this but some reports have proven that children who come from divorced homes are more than likely to become divorced themselves (Arreola, J. 2013). Some parents’ really do not realize that divorce can cause children to feel guilt or embarrassed of what they are going through with their family. It affects them emotionally causing them to have behavior issues in and out of school. This can lead to the child dropping out of school or finding comfort in other activities such as drugs or alcohol. An article by Lauren Hansen called 9 Negative Effects Divorce Reportedly Has on Children stated, “In 2009, the law firm Mishcon de Reya polled 2,000 people who had experienced divorce as a child in the preceding 20 years. And the results did not paint a positive picture of their experiences. The subjects reported witnessing aggression (42 percent), were forced to comfort an upset parent...
