Effects of Mass Media

The development of mass media during the twentieth century has been monumental. Mass media is the specific means of communication that is designed to reach a wide audience. (Lule, 2012) Think back to the early nineteen hundreds. The media they had then was limited to newspapers and radio. If a person did have access to a radio they had to schedule hearing the news around the radio stations schedule. The news reported in the newspapers was most likely old news by the time someone living in a country setting got their hands on it. Fast forward to the nineteen nineties. Cell phones were beginning to be very popular and almost everyone had a computer and of course, a television. Mass media had become more on demand, we could get news when we wanted in on twenty four hour news stations and constantly updated news and weather reports online. Television has become a huge part of our culture. Before television people would find other means of entertainment; outside play, conversation or going outside of their homes to socialize. Television and cell phones allows us to have access to endless programming, faster, more portable communication and media. This media has also made our culture over stimulated and sometimes over saturated with useless information. Personal home computers have put an endless supply of information at our finger tips. Because of information being so fast, business can be conducted much faster and much more efficiently. I have thought many times since starting college how much harder conducting research would be without a computer. If the Internet and home computers did not exist I would be finding myself a library and going through the card catalogs to find information. This would be a time consuming feat.

The development has influenced the American Culture in many ways. Our communication and information is

...Effects of Mass Media HUM/186 Effects of Mass Media Over the past one hundred years, media has evolved from what some would now likely describe as archaic forms of communication to a surge of high-tech forms of communication in the last twenty-five to thirty years. In the 1920’s radio was the primary source of media, and families would gather around the radio in living rooms to catch their favorite shows or news programs. When broadcast television came into the picture in the late 1940’s, radio started to make a shift toward more of a music format. Television became the mode of mass communication, and people were now seeing images and stories in their living rooms, such as the depiction of the Vietnam war, political advertisements, and presidential addresses, which were never available to them in that format before. Now, they had live action to go along with the words that they had previously only read in newspapers or hear spoken on the radio. It has been said that President Kennedy won his election because he looked better on television that Richard Nixon did. Radio did not go away, however, to this day radio is still the medium that is used for the news on the morning drive at work, or music on a long trip. There is an abundance of radio stations to pick from nowadays from news talk stations such as the popular NPR, and countless country, rock and roll, hip hop, and religious channels for the listener from which to pick. Television technology kept improving over the...

...The Effects of Mass Media Nicholas Hall University of Phoenix Hum/186 October 2, 2012 David Dinkins Throughout time ways of communicating have changed from oral to digital. Every new development in communicating and media has effected how people live and present themselves. A person’s life is characterized by what they listen to and the things they observe. Verbal communication was the beginning of mass media changes. Poets, teachers, and tribal storytellers first passed down information and knowledge my speaking tradition. Communication by speaking never reached a large crowd. The tribe kept their knowledge and information amongst themselves or their own community. After the alphabet came about, more people started writing, thus began the writing era. People started documenting oral traditions which turned into the written material. The developments of mass media for the future were defined by the written and oral eras in communicating. The publication era followed the oral and written eras, which showed to be a large change in mass communication. In the beginning printing was outrageously expensive and unless you were wealthy you could not afford the materials to read and write. When printing devices changed for the better, the price of materials dropped, and more people could afford them. Books were the first products that were marketed in history in masses (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2012). When written communication...

The most important development of the 20th century concerning the evolution of mass media is technology. In the beginning everyone was finding their information from the newspaper and the telegraph. That information was days old at best for some places in the United States. Then the radio was invented and information was able to be put out to the masses very fast. As technology progressed, the way people received their news went from reading a paper to listening on the radio and eventually in the 60’s to a television set so you no longer had to be anywhere but your living room couch to find out what was going on the world. Shortly after, the computer and internet was invented which led to the biggest leap in my opinion in technology of the century. With a computer everyone that had access to the internet could essentially put whatever they wanted out to the mass media instead of just being big time news stations. News became just a click away from one end of the earth to the other. A very large percentage of the United States probably can’t go 10 minutes without having the urge to look at their cell phone or update their status on a social media website. It’s as if it makes you believe that social media was developed for the sole purpose of advertising...

...Effects of Mass Media Trevor Stanton HUM/186 January 22, 2014 Effects of Mass Media During the last century there were several major developments in the evolution of mass media. These developments are the evolution of the print, electronic, and digital eras which now encompass modern day media. These three eras have significantly affected American culture and economics, while ushering in a new standard of mass communications. While paper printing can be traced back to China as early as 100 c.e, modern printing did not emerge until the mid-fifteenth century. At that time, the printing press was introduced. The printing press was a conglomerate of machine duplication, rapid duplication, and faster production. These three elements were necessary for mass-market innovation. Information and ideas could now be spread faster and farther than ever before. With the evolution of the printing press, production of mass quantities at lower costs per unit became essential in mass production of other goods. This led to the Industrial Revolution, modern capitalism, and the consumer culture of the twentieth century. “With the revolution in industry came the rise of the middle class and an elite business class of owners and managers who acquired the kind of influence formerly held only by the nobility or the clergy. Print media became key tools that commercial and political leaders used to distribute information and maintain social order”. (Campbell, R., Martin, C., & Fabos, B. (2012)....

...Effects of Mass Media In the last several decades Mass Media has had a tremendous effect on the American society. One of the first instruments of media was the radio, which was used in the early 1900’s mainly for national news about the war overseas. Since then mass media has expanded from the radio to smart phones, at the palm of your hand you can access the internet from just about anywhere. Mass media has countless influences on today’s America, both good and bad. The development of Mass Media began with oral communication. Material and facts first dispersed through oral traditions passed on by writers, teachers, and tribal storytellers (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2012). Oral communication had no way of reaching a mass audience so information and knowledge stayed within the population or community. But when the alphabet emerged, written material began to develop; therefore, the writing era arose. Oral traditions began to be documented and the inscribed word conquered spoken. The oral and written eras in communication, defined the future expansions of mass media. Succeeding the oral and written ages was the print era, which was a vast change in mass communication. First printing was costly and only the rich could manage to pay for books and papers. Then printing equipment improved, and the cost of printed supplies went down, so they became obtainable to more people. Books became the first mass-marketed invention in history (Campbell, Martin, & Fabos, 2012)...

...Effects of Mass Media HUM/186 Jennifer Williams July 27, 2015 Valerie Whelton Digital media forms have fundamentally overturned traditional media business models, the ways we engage with and consume media products, the way we interact with one another, and the ways we organize our daily lives around various media choices (Campbell. Martin, and Fabos, 2015). The major developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century were film and radio. The 1950’s and 1960’s also brought about dramatic electronic change with the invention of the television. The printing press led to nationalism that in turn nourished the idea of idealism (Campbell. Martin, and Fabos, 2015). Society began to rely less on their community and traditional leadership for insight and guidance. This newfound individualism proclaimed the rise of commerce and increased resistance to government interference in the business dealings of independent business owners. The democratic impulse of individualism became a fundamental value in American society in the nineteenth and twentieth century’s (Campbell. Martin, and Fabos, 2015). The creation of the telegraph in the late 1860’s paved the way for future technological inventions such as the wireless telegraphy (later named radio), the fax machine, and the cell phone. Digital communication has changed the way we watch television, read newspapers and magazines, and even attend school. Digital technology has influenced the American culture...
