...Technology’s effect on education Justin W. Campbell University of Maryland University College The effects of technology are evident in just about every area of our lives. Technology impacts the way we do our finances and how we receive our entertainment; however, one of the most impacted areas is that of education. Within education the effects of technology are seen in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, technology has provided new and innovative tools that enhance the learning experience. On the negative side, technology has added a level of distraction and has opened up a new horizon in the realm of academic dishonesty. The impact of technology on education is a double edged sword that can benefit academia while also hurting academia in the same swing. Before the influx of technological advances, a student’s access to empirical research was limited to brick and mortar repositories of information, the library. When faced with a research project students needed to appropriately allocate their time resources in order to physically visit a traditional library, scour catalogues of reference data, transcribe their notes (in handwriting) and then return home to write their paper; all the while, hoping that they have all the information needed. Additionally students were at the mercy of their local library to have the timeliest resources available as many smaller libraries would be horribly outdated (McCoy, 2014). Now in the age of technology, students...

As time continues to pass, technology becomes more and more involved in our lives. Although computers are an extreme use in the everyday lives of 21st Century humans, what are computers without the internet? Whether it is social media, online banking, or research, the internet is the main use of computers. The main problem with the internet is that it is taking the place of professional jobs that at one time were very important to people. Such jobs include photography, mailmen, bank tellers, and journalists. Shirky goes into explicit detail about the pros and cons on internet use in the daily lives of humans. Shirky had an Uncle Howard from Richmond Missouri who was very passionate about his job as a newspaperman. Howard was not very fond of change within his job and was not happy when the USA today came out. He felt his job was being taken over by people who did not appreciate and understand journalism. Shirky’s main point in his spiel is that those who use the internet are taking away the jobs of the professionals. Bloggers are especially guilty of taking away the jobs of professionals. Now-a-days anyone can go on to the internet and post on blogs and sites about their reactions or views on things. It does not take someone special to be a journalist. In fact there is no way to determine who is a journalist due to the major...

...Exploratory essay November 12, 2015 Is technology a danger or a solution to our society and our health The development of technology is usually considered good based on the fact that its main purpose is to make people’s lives easier. Nowadays, instead of people using the technology to help them organize their lives, it seems that it’s going the other way around. People became too dependent on technology and are, in a way, ruled by it. Most of the information we receive is through mobile devices or television. Too much time is spent looking at the phone or TV screen, making it dangerous to persons both physical and mental health. On the other hand, technology has helped a lot in many fields such as: medicine, communication, education, and transport, making the life we know today much safer, faster, and easier. The views on technology development are greatly divided. Some of the most popular views are: by people who consider that life without technology would be pointless, unorganized, and chaotic; by people who find using too much technology to be hazardous and believe that it’s making people unhealthier, dumber, and lazier; and by people who think that technology should became better, but only used to assist people and should not become a big part of everyday life. There are many reasons why technology is good and should be used daily. Some people can’t even imagine their day without the use of modern day technology. ...I believe that the technological change that has had the largest effect on life in this country is the Internet. When broadcast television came in to the scene it provided entertainment and information, this is similar to what the Internet is providing people today. However, the Internet does provide certain advantages over television. The three main advantages that the Internet has are that it provides instant access to specific information, information that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and that the Internet is interactive. Society has become very big on instant gratification. People need their information right now and the Internet can give us that. The father, William Powers discussed the difficulty by stating, “It almost had an existential feeling of, ‘I don’t know who I am with the Internet gone.’ But after a few months it hardened into a habit and we all began to realize we were gaining a lot from it” (Adler, 2013).
