...visit England, France, and Italy; my journey is a cultural experience that I will never forget. On the first day of our travels, we left the airport in Atlanta, GA for our fifteen hour journey to London, England. We arrived in the U.K. touring city learning the history of statues and gardens, witnessing the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, and viewing the beautiful city from the top of the London Eye. The following night we took an overnight ferry to Normandy, France to visit the D-day Memorial Beaches to receive a history lesson on what occurred during the last days of World War II. Our next stop on the agenda was Paris, France, the shopping capital of the world! The highlight of our Paris tour was going to the top of the Eiffel Tower, eating beignets in the café, and running from African venders. Days later we arrived in Italy where I met my homestay family, the Viviani’s. Accompanied by my host Gloria, we strolled along the Mediterranean beaches, propelled down a castle, and attended a birthday celebration. On the last day of our voyage we toured Rome visiting the Vatican and becoming more educated about the history of the different painters. That night we returned to the U.S. to be reunited with our families. My life as an African American, living in the south has not been easy. For a very long time, I felt as though I was being judged...

...for many years and has been done for recreation as well as religious and traditional purposes. There are many different parts to bungee jumping then many people know. Bungee jumping can be fun but dangerous if the jumper is not careful. Bungee jumping originated in the Pentecost Islands in the New Hebrides where men of a native tribe proved their manhood and to ensure a good yam harvest by jumping off a bamboo tower, which was 25 meters high, with a vine tied to their feet. The more modern bungee jumping originated in New Zealand in the late 80s, when jumpers used a rubber rope. This began in April 1979 when four people bungee jumped off the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England, but bungee jumping became famous by A.J. Hackett, who jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. His jump was on TV channels all over the world. As a result, became popular France, and eventually spread to other European countries, and is now a worldwide sport. It is also said that it originated from New Guinea. Men leaped from very tall wooden towers attached to the tower by vines tied to their ankles, it was originally used as a test of courage but has since been converted into a recreational activity and is seen to be a once in a lifetime thrilling experience. The sport is simple yet exciting; jumping from a tall platform i.e. a bridge or a crane whilst attached to a length of elastic chord. A lot of calculations must be done before a bungee jump to ensure the safety of the jumper...

..."What are the flowers for?" "My friend gave them to me to cheer me up." "Why did you need cheering up?" "It's been a rough week for several reasons. It began with me crying while reading a poem in front of a bunch of people." "What was the poem about?" "It was about my best friend attempting suicide in my house, then me having an abortion a few years later, then that same friend successfully committing suicide, then me getting pregnant. It's sort of my reflection on the cyclical nature of life. And how we are a lot more connected than we understand or admit. The poem is titled: 'I realized last night that, for the first time in my life, I am finally really willing to be an organ donor.' ------------------------------ Sweet sixteen One summer afternoon, about out the door for family dinner at Outback Steakhouse. Went to check on my bestie Jenie, staying with me for the summer, kicked out of her own house again, one more time. I had a feeling. Are you sure you don't want to come with us? I said, peeking into the top bunk of my little brothers bed. No response. Motionless, unconscious. I ran to my auntie, doctor frances, downstairs. "She'll be okay," said doctor frances. We called the ambulance anyway. "She'll be okay, "said doctor frances, again, after they wheeled Jenie away on a stretcher. Jenie went to icu, had her stomach pumped, went to rehab after that. We pretty much pretended nothing had happened. Time passed. Lots of things happened. One winter afternoon...

...Quinceanera It is customary for all Latin American cultures to celebrate a coming of age party for their daughters called a quinceanera. Parents commemorate their beloved daughter’s transition from being a little girl to becoming a fifteen year old young lady by inviting family and friends to join in this huge event. A modern day young lady is celebrated with a ceremony, grand party with extravagant decorations, exquisite food, memorable toasts form the godparents, and usually wrapped up with a funky dance. Every little girl awaits the day when she will be treated and given the attention of a princess for a day. It was my pleasure to attend my cousin Daira’s quinceanera, and witness my first quinceanera in Mexico. It was a Saturday afternoon in Tijuana, Mexico as I arrived at the church. The streets were extremely narrow and they had cars parked on either side - trucks, vans, cars – making it nearly impossible for moving vehicles to run past each other. As I drove up I could not help but notice how all the buildings were built so close together, it was difficult to see where each building began. Once I paid closer attention to the houses I noticed the obvious iron gates which bordered each individual home. The buildings were poorly painted a peachy pink color it seemed as if we were in the middle of a rundown apartment complex because of how dirty each building seemed. Through the gates you could see people carrying on their normal daily routine in their homes like little...

...Analysis of Moulin Rouge Deidra Lyyski ENG 225 Introduction to Film Instructor Kenneth Newton April 10, 2013 Analysis of Moulin Rouge Many films use a stylistic system to structure a narrative around a main thematic idea. Baz Luhrman’s 2001 Oscar winning masterpiece Moulin Rouge (Luhrman, 2001) is one such film that contains each of these narrative elements: sound, cinematography, mise-en-scene, and editing. A more in-depth analysis requires that mise-en-scene to be broken down into the categories of setting, color usage, costume, makeup and hairstyle, and props. Through these elements, the movie’s theme of Bohemian inspired ideals of beauty, freedom, truth, and above all things: love is illustrated. Along with highlighting the prominent themes and symbols evident in the film, I will analyze how each of the above mentioned are used. The film is set in the village of Montmarte, Paris during the pre-war era between 1899 and 1900. Christian (Ewan McGregor), an impoverished poet, comes to Paris and falls in with a group of Bohemians who want to sell a musical number to Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent), the owner of the Moulin Rouge. Zidler needs a financial backer to transform the bordello into a modern theater; the rich Duke of Worcester (Richard Roxburgh) is persuaded to back the renovations as well as a spectacular new show, written primarily by Christian, in return for Zidler’s guarantee that the Duke retains the exclusive favors of Satine (Nicole Kidman), the club’s star...

My map is adjusted to the north. Once the first steps are taken in a strange land, it becomes yours. I will never forget the days-long train trip to Omsk (Russia), when I woke up in the morning in my tiny cabin and I know – few more days to travel, I am not leaving train today, have to keep myself busy with anything that is around me. I will never forget the old Indian woman in New Mexico at the Red Cliffs selling turquoise jewelry. I will never forget wandering through Paris when early in the morning after waking up, after six hours founding myself close to the Eiffel Tower. Only then I realized that I cannot go to it, because it seemed that all my blood was in my foot and my head...

...In the year of 2004 my family and I went to Paris, France. We drove in our car, and it isn’t easy to drive in Paris. It was a very good vacation with my family and I think that Paris is one of the cities in the world all people have to see. Families, couples and old people come to the city to experience the French people, their sights and their amazing architecture. Of course I was only 11 years old, so I was more interested in visiting Disneyland and the Eiffel tower, than go to museums and looking at buildings. Even though it has been many years since I visited Paris, many things about that vacation are still very clear in my memory. For example, I remember when my sister, my father, my mother and I went to Disneyland. It was very exciting because many of my classmates had been there at the time and told me how fun it had been. My sister and I were so ecstatic when we entered, we didn’t even have the time to embrace the atmosphere or look around properly, and we ran around and spoke out of context. We calmed down and followed our parents around. After some time, after seeing where all the princesses lived, we came to the conclusion that Disneyland wasn’t as fun as we had imagined it would be. We saw the princess parade and a place where you could see animals like horses, chickens and rabbits. I think that was the highlight on that trip. Anyway, sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do, but who you do it with, so I would say that I was very lucky to have my sister with me...
