All parents are hoping for a healthy child. Receiving the news that a child has a congenital heart defect can be devastating news to a parent. Early detections and interventions are now in place to properly treat the children with some congenital defect. Just like any other disease, proper treatment and management should be taken into consideration to avoid further complications. When untreated, congenital heart defect would lead to another disease called Eisenmenger Syndrome. Eisenmenger Syndrome is a disease that has so many complications if left untreated.

Does it affect both genders? When does ES normally develop? So many questions for a disease that was thought to be rare. ES affects everyone, primarily adolescents and adults with an untreated or treated congenital heart defect. Generally, ES develops in children before reaching puberty. Infants born with any congenital heart defects such as VSD, ASD, AV canal defect, and PDA are most susceptible (El-Cham & Willis, 2014).
