This course aims to develop students’ proficiency in business English related to job interviews and job applications. Students are expected to make presentations based on reports from various printed sources. Students are also expected to participate in discussions on business- related topics.

Course Objectives
This course aims to 1. improve the student’s speaking abilities through business-related tasks such as self-introduction, greeting visitors, leaving messages, making and rescheduling appointments, conduct meetings, negotiating, socializing and presenting information. 2. improve the student’s listening comprehension on business-related topics both in-class and outside classes.

Teaching Methods and Materials
Students are expected to actively participate in classroom activities and discussion on relevant business topics. Activities such as individual, pair (role-play), and group work (simulation) are usually conducted in class. The instruction and class activities throughout the semester are based on the course textbook entitled Business Result by John Hughes and Jon Naunton (2007), Oxford University Press. Ten units are covered during this course: five units before the midterm and another five before the final. In addition to participating in class activities, students are encouraged to (1) practice their listening after class and (2) review their lessons using the interactive workbook CD accompanying the textbook.

Midterm Examination 2.1 Listening 15 points 40 points Students are to be assessed through their in-class activities. In total 6 activities (5 points each) will be counted toward the assignments component. The activity topics are to be chosen from the 10 units covered throughout the entire course. The listening test covers the listening skills and tasks in the lessons practiced before the midterm week (see Listening Exam Structure for more information). Students will be notified of the test rom. The midterm speaking assessment (Unit 16) is arranged by the class teacher (see Grading Criteria for more information).

Listening Exam Structure
The following structure applies to both midterm and final listening exams. Parts 1. Discussion Building Students’ Tasks Write a dialogue incorporating expressions from the units discussed in class. 2.1 Heard Monologue / Dialogue Listen to a previously heard monologue or dialogue and write short answers to questions. (Students hear it twice.) 2.2 New Monologue/Dialogue Listen to a new monologue/dialogue and write short answers to questions. (Students hear it twice.) Points 5

Grading Criteria
1. Class Activities (5 points each) For class activities (5 points each), the following (1 – 5) rating scale is adopted 1. incomprehensible, did not fulfill the task requirements 2. sometimes incomprehensible, serious basic grammatical errors and did not fulfill most of the task 3. comprehensible but did not fulfill all elements of the task, substantial grammatical errors 4. clear and comprehensible, fulfilled most elements of the task, a few grammatical errors 5. well-structured, completed all elements of the task, grammatically accurate, easy to understand

2. Midterm Speaking Test (Unit 16): Reporting Back (15 points) VIDEO or In-Class A five point scale is adopted on the following components. 1 - 5: Clarity (Audibility / Pacing) 1 - 5: Accuracy (Grammatical Expressions) 1 - 5: Content (Relevancy to the task / Consistency with directions)

Final Speaking Test (Unit 12): Giving a Formal Presentation (15 points) • In-Class A five point scale is adopted on the following components. 1 - 5: Manner of Delivery (Eve-Contact / Pacing / Professionalism) 1 - 5: Accuracy (Grammatical Expressions) 1 - 5: Content (Relevancy to the task / Easy to understand / Ability to deal with questions)

4. Grades The grade/percent range correspondence to be adopted for this course is as follow: A 85 – 100 B+ 80 – 84 B 75 – 79 C+ 70 – 74 C 60 – 69 D+ 55 – 59 D 50 – 54 F 49 and below

Attendance Policy
- Students are to maintain 80% of attendance. For instance, if your class meets twice a week, you can be absent no more than 3 times before the midterm and 3 times before the final exam. A point will be deducted for each absence. More than 6 absences from class will result in an automatic F. - Students who are more than 15 minutes late are considered absent.
