...Introduction Elecdyne is a 20 year old Japanese electronics SME with 100 employees that is currently struggling in the Japanese electronics market. This company is considering internationalizing their business in order to better meet the needs of the company. The following report outlines where Elecdyne should internationalize to (section 1) as well as how they should internationalize (Section 2) and what products they should produce (Section 3) once they decide on the later options. Elecdyne will choose a country to internationalize to through the use of a combined SWOT and PEST analysis. The strengths and weaknesses portion of the SWOT analysis (see table 1.1) along with emails from the president, Matsumoto Toyo, spurred the genesis of the factors involved in choosing a country to internationalize to. The most important factor Elecdyne needs to consider is cost minimization, which determines if there is cost reductions associated with internationalizing to a specific country. The next factor is access to technology and determines the likelihood of accessing technological expertise within a country. Elecdyne also needs to consider not only having access to new markets, but also the size of the markets being targeted. Additionally, political and economic risk factors are important due to the fact that Elecdyne cannot afford to take high risks. Political risk is the "risk of a change in political institutions stemming from a change in government control, social fabric, or other...

...1. Introduction The ability of firms to secure their market position is considered as vital for their survival. In practice, it has been proved that firms that have faced severe challenges have managed to recover using appropriately customized strategic options. The potentials of small Japanese firm, Elecdyne a small size firm that operates in the electronics industry in Japan to stabilize its performance through internationalization is explored in this paper. Three countries have been reviewed as of their appropriateness to support the firm’s specific initiative: USA, China and Australia. At the same time, a SWOT analysis and a PEST analysis have been employed for revealing the potentials of the organization to improve its performance through internationalization. Three different methods for entering the market chosen are presented. It is concluded that the expansion of the firm in a foreign market could highly support the increase of its profitability but only if certain terms are met, as indicatively highlighted in the sections that follow. In any case, it seems that the continuous monitoring of the relevant process is necessary for avoiding unexpected failures. 2. Current and Future Business Environment One of the most important characteristics of the global market is its high competitiveness, a fact that has been related to the expansion of globalization (Griffin 2008). At this point, the following issue appears: how the potential of a firm to face the challenges of the...

...Year: 2011/2012 Introduction: This report deals with the internationalization of Elecdyne, a Japanese company, based in Tokyo. Elecdyne has manufactured a broad range of electronic products since 1990. Currently, it employs 100 staff, which produces products such as mp3 players, televisions and hifi equipment. In the moment, Elecdyne supplies products only to the Japanese market; nonetheless it has failed to grow its business in the last two years. With high wages compared to other countries, lack of R&D staff and the licenses that must be paid, Elecdyne is finding it increasingly difficult to compete. Therefore, Elecdyne wishes to internationalize in another country. This report analyses three different countries (France, China, Japan) by using appropriate frameworks and data collected from different resources. I. The global environment: First, a company must understand the global environment on the industry. I decided to choose STEEP framework because it is simple, general and it permits to analyse the broad factors that have an impact on the industry (Rugman & Collinson, 2009). (Task Group Z) STEEP ANALYSIS: Social | Social networking | | Internet is a new way of communication. Companies can share and collect information about customers and competitors.Social networks like Facebook and twitter constitute important tools for a company like Elecdyne to be successful (Bayer, 2009):-Easy to use and easy to access.-Allow building a relationship...

...TASK 1: CURRENT ISSUES IN GLOBAL ECONOMY (FUTUROLOGY) Identify the key trends likely to affect Elecdyne over the next 5 years (these can be different / additional to those identified by the futurologist) • Economic crisis: Even if Japan is not affected like Europe, the government had launch a stimulative policy in order to improve the current situation. Many Japanese companies are impacted by this general economic conditions. • Sustainability: Companies such as Elecdyne have to take care of the public opinion about ecology which is requiring more and more transparency. • Evolution of consumption: Globalization and new technologies have changed the way people purchase. For example, online sales are increasing because of the number of Internet users and this occurs mostly in the electronic sector. Online shopping is more convenient and time saving which appeals to young people. Although old people tend to shop in regular shops, more and more young people prefer shopping online rather than in shops. • Counterfeit goods: In regions like Asia but also throughout the world, a large number of original goods are copied by look-alike products. This is positive for the costumers, because usually the look-alike products are much cheaper, but on the other hand it influences the original produts’ producers a lot, because a lot of people are price seekers which means they tend to buy goods which are cheap. STEEP Analysis We chose to do the STEEP Analysis, because it touches all...

...BUSINESS INTERNATIONALISATION PROCESSES: DUNNING’S ECLECTIC THEORY Tutorial Activity 1.4 Part one consists of the factors that the firm Elecdyne should take into account when internationalising: 1. Labour costs – This specifically focuses on the hourly rate of the potential employees and company costs. Minimum wages in each of the countries (Germany, United Kingdom and China) may fluctuate causing Elecdyne to pay more or less from time to time. The company costs that have to be taken into consideration would be the time and resources that it would take to train the staff in the countries where Elecdyne wants to internationalise. 2. Buying and Supplying – The GBP equivalent to the country’s currency could vary so Elecdyne may at times gain a profit if the exchange rate is lower for Japan but lose out on profit if the exchange rate is higher than Japan. This could also affect the electronic products that Elecdyne would supply and sell internationally. 3. Market demand – This area concentrates on the fact that would there be enough demand for Elecdyne’s electronic products globally. Elecdyne would have to analyse the market demands of its chosen countries where Elecdyne wants to internationalise. Elecdyne would have to take into account that the consumers needs and wants vary in each country. 4. Networking - could lead to knowledge transferral and partnership in study and growth from interaction between global companies. This could help Elecdyne’s business growth...

...Tutorial Feedback for Task 15 1. From the previous tasks in theme 3 identify 3 key international management issues from the point of view of Elecdyne Examples here could include (from the various tasks):- * Location of Production functions * Supply chain management * Taxation * Production cost * Innovation * Social Innovation:- * In health and education there are changes occurring, due to social innovations in social networking (use of internet to provide information that used to be delivered face to face e.g. online education and diagnosis websites), and also structural changes (e.g. in Higher Education worldwide there is a greater demand for online, distance and work based approaches which are increasing the need for appropriate electronic hardware and software, whilst in school education in the UK (specifically in England) parents can now set up schools outside local authority control. In health, in the UK (again in England specifically, GPs (doctors’ surgeries) are going to have much more control over spending (reducing that controlled by health boards), and there is also the issues of pushing more care out to the community, which means that health care workers will need to use communications and other mobile medical technologies to meet medical requirements. * Sustainability * Production efficiency - i.e. making the same product with fewer resources, including recycling opportunities, renewable energy opportunities...
