Elements Of Collectivism In Ayn Rand's Anthem

A society cannot be successful unless it has both elements of collectivism and individualism in it because independence, creativity, opinion, and teamwork all go together to make a society that works well together. Collectivism is the practice of giving a group priority over each individual in it. Another word for it is a Communist Government. It all depends on what people stand for and what their opinion is whether people agree or disagree with collectivism. An example of collectivism in the book Anthem is when everyone eats, sleeps, works, and walks together as a group. For example, when choosing a career or having an opinion about anything. In Anthem it states, “We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike.” That statement is the main definition of collectivism in someone else’s point of view. When Equality was born, he was taught that being different was bad. Equality was tall, smart, and a very curious person. Many of the teachers told him that he was born with a curse because he was different. Being different isn’t always a bad thing, it just means that people are brave enough to be himself. Don’t let someone else tell other people who they want to be. People should be their own person and make their own decisions. Equality wanted to be a Scholar when he grew up, but when he turned fifteen the Council of Vocations choose his job to be a street sweeper. Choosing a passion for a career is all apart of the climb of life. One thing that people lose when living in a society is freedom of speech. In Anthem, citizens are not allowed to say the word “I” or even have an opinion about anything. When Equality ran into the Uncharted Forest, he laughed for hours because he felt how it was to actually live and be free to do what he wanted. Freedom is one of the main reasons why people live. Everyone is different and without freedom, we would all be the same. The one major way to improve this problem is to give back the right to freedom overall. For example, giving the citizens a few choices on what career they want to continue in, or by letting them have an opinion on things they like and dislike. (Rand
