Elgin Art Studio Tour Research Paper

The number of visitors to the Elgin Art Studio Tour was more of a trickle than a flood on Saturday; and it could well have been that area flooding and early morning winds limited the number of patrons, but those who did partake were not disappointed.

Former school friends, some of who drove in from Kerrville, Texas for the event and to visit their friend, surrounded LaVerne Kylberg Arbuckle, a local painter showing at the Elgin Depot Museum. One of her paintings called The Three Gifts is a tribute to her late husband Ray Arbuckle who passed in 2007. She has found great inspiration and solace in painting, picking up the brush after laying it down years ago when raising her children.

“I learned under a quilt with aunts doing hand work and I always loved drawing,” said Arbuckle. She drew all the time as a child, and painted as a young adult, but after becoming a …show more content…
Martha Cox commented that she had a picture of her grandfather as a young man standing in a print shop in Quincy, Illinois in 1902, and that the building closely resembled the inside of one of buildings in downtown Elgin with its period shelving and high ceilings. A couple from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania visited The Owl, and remarked that they used to live in Elgin, and recalled how they prayed for an H.E.B. to open here. A local couple, Crystal and Eddie, took the tour on bicycles.

“It is good to talk to the artist,” said Crystal during the studio tour, and commented that she may be inspired to start painting and drawing again.

Scott and Kelly Thompson traveled from Leander to attend the tour, drawn by a past meeting with Tiger and Erin Flores of Earthen Metals, whom they had met at Sherwood Forest Faire, resulting in Scott becoming hooked on learning the art of
