Elijah McCoy was an inventor who created the first lubrication device. His lubrication device fixed the problem of trains having to stop every few miles to be oiled. The device used steam pressure to evenly pump oil to wherever it was needed. Elijah McCoy received over 50 patents related to lubrication devices (Elijah McCoy Biography). He received his first patent on July 12th 1872 for the lubrication cup (Elijah McCoy 1844-1929). Although he was recognized for his achievements then, his name wasn't on most of his inventions. After Elijah was 15, his parents sent him to Scotland to learn how to be a mechanical engineer. When he returned, he couldn't find employment because of his skin color. Elijah had to accept a bad job as an oilman and fireman on Michigan Central railroad ( Elijah McCoy Biography). McCoy had to persist at trying to find a job. On the railroad, He found a problem, trains had to regularly stop to be oiled in order to continue to run properly. Using what he learned in Scotland, McCoy Invented a Device to fix this
