The poem "Hair" by Elizabeth Acevedo is about how she's constantly being told by her mother that something is wrong with her hair how it naturally is. Although she sees nothing wrong with her hair she explains that her hair is part of her history and trying to hide that would be like trying to erase part of who she is. Instead of feeding to the negative remarks she expresses her love for her hair, the history that comes with it and why there is absolutely nothing wrong with her hair. In my essay I aim to prove how this poem positively represents me and my hair.

Through her poetic words Elizabeth Acevedo tells a story about how black love is the most sweetest and beautiful love there is, she even compares it to sugar cane. From that love a beautiful child comes out, no matter how curly, kinky, thick and coiled their hair is.This positively represents me because I am a result of that love from a Dominican woman and a black man. Even though some Dominicans like to deny it they are black too but I embrace my roots and I think all black people should, especially Hispanics who don’t know much of their history because it's been taken from them. We need to uplift each other instead of talking down on each other because of our hair texture and the color of our skin.This poem tries to get that message across that we be proud of who we are and that we shouldn’t shame those who are even if we are not. She doesn’t want us to hide our blackness through permed and pressed hair, she wants us to show it off. She wants us to understand that black is beautiful in all shades and hair types and being with a black man should not mean that you fear your child will be dark with "nappy"
