Money is an obvious incentive to working. Ella Rodman Church’s “Money-Making for Ladies” lists numerous way that the ordinary housewife could make some extra money. Many of the ideas were things that most women already did for their families or could easily do. Church gives advice on how to decorate and make a house seem cozy so that women could offer their spare rooms to people that would pay to stay there. She also gives many ideas such as raising animals, gardening, and preparing foods. I believe that Church’s domestic advice books must have inspired many women to become breadwinners or at least recognize their abilities to support themselves and a family.
