The poem “Eloisa to Abelard” was written in 1717 by Alexander Pope, the main characters are Peter Abelard, a wealthy scholar and Eloisa, Abelard’s mistress. Abelard and Eloisa fall in love and get married; Eloisa’s family is not in favor of this and castrates Abelard. After the assault, even though Eloisa and Abelard had a child, they decided to go to monasteries. Eloisa is tortured by the separation and is constantly contemplating weather to live the simple happy life and follow God, or to follow her heart and pursue Abelard. The movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a romantic fantasy about Joel and Clementine who both have procedures to have their memory of each other erased but meet each other again and fall in love again, the movie ending says that they hear tapes of what happened in the past and they learn from their mistakes and live happily ever after. The relationship between art and happiness is that the art and happiness are more effective when Eloisa and Abelard remember each other and choose a life together. In the poem, Eloisa says “Not on the Cross my eyes were fix'd, but you: Not grace, or zeal, love only was my call, And if I lose thy love, I lose my all.” Eloisa marries Abelard because she is truly in live with him and wants the life that is natural to every human. Wanting to find someone to spend the rest of your life with is part of human genetics, healthy human genetics. She says that her eyes were not fixed on the cross, but her eyes were fixed on Abelard, this not only shows how much she loves him, but also where her priorities are. She is not interested in the religious aspects of marrage, but rather him alone. Abelard means everything to her at this point in her life. Eloisa says that if she looses her love, she looses her all, in other words, if she cant love Abelard then she looses everything then there is no reason for her to live. Unfortunately Eloisa is not able to keep her marriage alive because of the lack of consent, but she was able to keep connection with Abelard through letters. “Yet write, oh write me all, that I may join Griefs to thy griefs, and echo sighs to thine.” The difference between what you say and what you do is huge, Eloisa and Abelard not only think to themselves they want to be together, they act on it. It would be very easy for one or both of them to just think to themselves that they want to be with the other but for them to actually put in the effort to stay in contact and write letters to the other means that they truly want to spend the rest of their lives together even though they are separated from one another in one of the most drastic ways possible. In the poem “Eloisa to Abelard” the statement “Ignorance is bliss” is very controversial weather it is to be taken literally or in a sarcastic manner, this is proof that the quote “Ignorance is bliss” is meant sarcastically. Throughout the poem Eloisa constantly goes back and forth between forgetting and remembering, every time she is leaning towards forgetting Abelard, she never actually follows through with it but when she chooses to remember she actually acts on it and decides to write to him. In the poem Eloisa is compelled to write to Abelard, she is compelled to do many things that also hurt her relationship and decision making process as well. While in the monestary Eloisa is forced to pray, and devote herself to God, but we know that this is not what she truly feels. “But now no face divine contentment wears, 'Tis all blank sadness, or continual tears. See how the force of others' pray'rs I try, (O pious fraud of am'rous charity!)” Prayer that makes someone sad is not Gods intention, its intended to free someone of sin and to glorify the God whom they pray to. Eloisa does not feel this at all when she prays, she feels sad, empty and blank, this is not only unhealthy for her physical health but it is horrible for her mental health and her relationship with Abelard. There are many examples of the true love in the poem, but there are just as many if not more in the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. One of the best examples in the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” of Joel and Clementine’s true love for each other is Joel’s journal. Before Joel and Clementine meet, Joel’s journal was very bland and uneventful, he says that all he wrote about was going to work and coming home living with his roomates, but after he meets Clementine his journal is filled with entries of events that he did with Clememtine such as going to the Charles River when it was frozen and laying on the ice in the middle of the river and looking at constolations. Joel would draw pictures of Clementines face with a skeleton body, in a boat as a form of art, these pictures may seem odd but it was a great form of art for them because some may consider them an odd couple. Joel’s room went from being an ordinary room with nothing much in it, to having many paintings and drawings of Clementine. Another example of how Joel and Clementine are meant for each other is simply the time that they spend together. Whenever they were together they were always having fun, laughing and building off the others happiness. Although this did take a turn for the worse, the good times heavily outweighed the bad times and ultimately it ended up working out between them. The last and most important reason that Joel and Clementine should be together is the fact that they both had their memory erased, and yet, somehow through divine intervention, or true love they reconnected and ended falling in love all over again. After all the unique series of events Joel and Clementine end up hearing tapes of what they said about each other. These words were very truthful at the time but even more hurtful, and yet they still decide to be together even though they know what the outcome was the first time. This is the true testament of love. The relationship between art and happiness is an extremely complicated risk which I believe is worth taking. This risk also provokes the question “Is ignorance really bliss?” I disagree, I believe that the ability to make decisions for yourself is the quality in life that makes us human, and without that life is not worth living.
