Near Field Communication. A convenient life comes with a price.

Technology has been on a tremendous up rise in the past years, with the increasing technology come increasing ethical issues. Nothing in this world is perfect, so down sides to technology is expected. For example, personally I never buy the first edition of any new product, like a gaming system or a phone usually because the kinks aren’t ironed out at the time of release. A popular technology that is being put in new electronic devices to make life easier is Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC is a short range wireless communication technology that enables devices designed to establish radio communications with each other by being touched together or brought within a short distance. The NFC standard regulates a radio technology that allows two devices to communicate when they are in close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters, allowing for more secure exchange of information. NFC came out Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), is the technology used by shipping companies and in superstores to keep track of goods, it uses electromagnetic induction in order to transmit information (Egan 2013). NFC is similar technology, but made better equip for consumer smartphones and other devices. NFC can work in three different modes NFC target, NFC initiator, and NFC peer to peer. An NFC initiator actively generates an Radio Frequency (RF) field that can power a passive NFC target (an unpowered chip) commonly referred to as a 'tag’, which allows NFC targets to be integrated with retail advertising, price stickers, key fobs, or other applications, none requiring external power (Nosowitz, 2011). NFC technology will make it easy to track shopping and purchase habits of customers along with location tracking. This is perfect for marketers; they would now be able to make use of hyper targeting marketing techniques outside of online context where it currently resides. This will allow marketers to personally tailor advertising campaigns that can be delivered on location and at the point of sale to increase impulse buys. This brings ethical concerns for many reasons. First I feel that the biggest ethical concern will be targeted advertisements, you won’t have to be on the surfing the web at this point to see offers in different places. As NFC technology becomes more common the downside for consumers increases. Retailers could force customers into adopting and using this technology by offering exclusive promotions for NFC purchases or charges for using the traditional form of payment. For example, I have around six financial accounts that forced me to take e-statement over paper statements by attaching a fee to paper statement. Of course I am going to choose the option that requires me to keep my money in my pocket. I understand that the future will be paperless, but in this case I don’t really lose anything. This technology could punish consumers who chose to keep their privacy and do not want to reveal every aspect of their lives to companies who are trying to get as much money from them as possible. This advertisement will cause discrimination of pricing based on two equally valid methods of payment. Consumers who wish to make private and safe payments with cash run the risk of having their equal dollar devalued for not wanting to change over to the technology that is being adopted by the rest of the generation.
Then we have the security concerns of NFC. Before NFC technology can ultimately take over as the standard of payment, awareness must be raised about security issues with mobile phones. Security of NFC enabled phones could be better or no worse than using a card for payment. Smart phones are handheld computers with strong cryptography authentication protocol can be built into their systems but it is up to device manufacturers and service providers to ensure these protections are in place for NFC transactions. The fact that you have to be within a few centimeters to make a payment provides additional protection against unwanted communication, the standard does not ensure secure communications and various types of attacks are already known in literature. Another security issue is malware being passed around. Malware can put on a device causing every device that the initial phone comes in to communications with to be infected. Anti-virus software and operating system architecture that controls flow of information between applications will be important safeguards to mitigate such attacks. Despite this real concern, a recent study revealed that 71% of smart phone users have never considered installing anti-virus software on their phones (Geiger, 2011).
There are five known threats to NFC technology. Eavesdropping, data corruption, data modification, data insertion and man in the middle attack. Eavesdropping is when two devices communicate and an attacker use an antenna to receive the communications between the two. Data corruption is simply used when the attacker wants to disturb the communications causing the information that is being sent not readable by the receiver. In data modification the attacker wants the receiving device to actually receive some valid, but manipulated data. Data insertion is when the attacker inserts messages into the data exchange between two devices. Last is the man in the middle attack where the two parties think that they are communication with only one another but is unknowingly sending and receiving messages through a third party.
NFC will definitely be a part of our near future, especially when it comes to benefits like shorter waiting times. With a highly useful technology like this this, security steps must be taken before mass use adopted. I believe that security will be the deciding factor on whether the public use it or not. The population must first feel that their information and privacy will be safe. An NFC chip at this moment does not hold the security factors that’s needed to keep consumers and businesses safe.

Influences of Emerging Technology

...Influences of emerging technology The impact of new and emerging technology on the global scale depends very much on the same factors that influence local acceptance and uptake. There are countries with different levels of industrialisation, technology infrastructure and wealth. Also political cultural and economic forces in present help various technologies succeed in some area and hinders them in others. If there is a rise in acceptance in technology it could create manufacturing opportunities. China with its huge population combined with political and cultural change has become the favoured location for many manufacturing industries. Countries with strong economic growth and population and a good disposable income are very accepting to the rapid uptake of technology. At the moment there is an enormous growth in information and communication fields. This has created a significant social change. (p167) Copy paragraph p168. Emerging technologies often result from an unorthodox combination of existing entities. The focus of these new technologies lies in the areas of: * Group collaboration on tasks * Next generation internet architecture that facilitates smoother communication * Real-world web services It is the norm to have multidisciplinary teams from around the globe working on one project. I remember a few years back when these smart phones were just being used to make a few calls or occasionally send an email or two. But things have changed, and our technologies have advanced drastically. From Near Field Communication, mobile payment options, utilization of the USB 3.0, Wearable tech devices that add a drastic level of convenience, and also fitness tracking software that is being equipped into devices that can monitor heart rates and also track meal and diet plans. Every other day a new technology emerges and makes life one tad more convenient. Business Mobility. Though mobile payment options have been available for quite some time, they are now being used more than ever. Most small businesses now strive off of their mobile smart phones. One main perk is the convenience, taking a payment on the go is now effortless and efficient thanks mobile POS developers. Another is the ability to easily keep track of inventory, what is being sold and what is not being sold. For example, the POS system that Shop Keep provides, offers all of these services on the go, will also provide you an easy to understand yet deep cost analysis on everything that is being rung out through its system and even of shipments you receive. Speed is also a factor, Mobility has the power to improve the customer...

...BLOG Emerging IT Technologies Have you seen the Iron Man movies? Imagine working like Tony Stark. On that movie alone, there are lots of ideas that popped out for new technologies. Now, a majority of these are not real. But in the rapid evolution of information technology, that time when we use the stuff Tony Stark uses might be sooner than we think. Here are a few samples of the technologies that are emerging right now: 1. Gesture Recognition Using gesture recognition and Computer vision control technology, we can make some tasks easier. It is also being used In Xbox 360’s kinect. This can become quite useful in the future. It is even being considered in the field of surgery – a very delicate field. In the movies, we can see Tony stark making hand gestures with his UI. It is awesome because the information is displayed right in front of him. He performs a lot of activities with his hands. Where could we apply this? I can imagine using this technology in manufacturing where small and delicate parts are inspected manually on some departments. Hand gesture could be used with a powerful camera and mechanical arms that allows the inspector to check very small equipment by having it displayed on a big screen, not through a device that looks like a microscope. And using his or her hand gestures, the camera and the mechanical arm can be controlled using hand gestures. That will simplify and make the job a lot easier. The inspection will be more accurate as well...

...MBA 540 Information Systems Emerging Technology Professor Voight September 11, 2012 For this research assignment we were to focus on emerging technologies for the Internet, within this category I am going to focus on the importance of smart phones and mobile devices. The first cell phone was unveiled in 1983 and has come a long way since then. Cell phones were first given the ability to connect to the Internet in 1999. This is nowhere close to what we think of today when we access the Internet on our phones today. The first smartphone, PalmOne Treo 600, was unveiled in 2003 and was the first successful merger of a cell phone and PDA. Cell phones in our society are more like computers than a phone. Most cell phones today are considered smartphones, and more people than not own a smartphone. Smartphones and mobile devices are changing the way companies conduct business, communicate, and make sales. When discussing smartphones and mobile devices the word apps, short for applications, often comes up. An app is an application, typically a small, specialized program downloaded onto mobile devices. Apps are designed to do any number of specific things, such as calculate tips, GPS navigation, provide entertainment, and many more. For example, Brinks home security systems offer an application that allows users to arm and disarm their alarm system on their device. Craftsman also has an app that allows a mobile user to check if their garage door is open or shut as well as control...

The sale of mobile devices has seen a huge boom and is now surpassing those of PCs [1]. With this enormous use of smart phones across the world and as well as the introduction of cloud computing concept, Mobile Cloud computing or MCC has become the new paradigm in the world of mobile services. This paper will discuss the technology of MCC, applications and challenges faced. Mobile Cloud Computing: Introduction MCC in its simplest form can be defined as an infrastructure where the storage of data and its processing is outside a mobile device. What mobile cloud computing does is move processing and storage to the cloud and thereby bringing applications and the computing power to a broader spectrum of mobile users [2]. Mobile service providers can provide services to the subscribers as AAA which refers to authentication, authorization and as well as accounting which is based on what is known as an home agent or HA and the end users data being stored on the cloud database. Every time a request is initiated from the subscriber, it is delivered to the cloud based system with the help of Internet. The controllers on the cloud will be able to process these requests and eventually providing the subscribers with the respective cloud based service. These...

...The Internet is all about various computers communicating with each other. The prevailing model of the Internet is the notion of clients and servers. You can understand this better by imagining a drive-through restaurant. As you drive to the little speaker, a barely intelligible voice asks for your order. You ask for your "cholesto-burger supreme," and the bored teenager packages your food. You drive up, exchange money for the combo meal, and drive away. Meanwhile, the teenager waits for another customer to appear. The Internet works much like this model. Large permanent computers called Web servers permanently host Web pages and other information. They are much like the drive-through restaurant. Users "drive up" to the Web server using a Web browser. The data is exchanged, and the user can read the information on the Web browser. What's interesting about this model is the interaction doesn't have to stop there. Since the client (user's) machine is a computer, it can be given instructions. Commonly, the JavaScript language is used to store special instructions in a Web page. These instructions (like the HTML code itself) don't mean anything on the server. Once the page gets to the client machine, the browser interprets the HTML code and any other JavaScript instructions. While much of the work is passed to the client, there are some disadvantages to this client-side approach. Programs designed to work inside a Web browser are usually greatly...

...Running head: EMERGING ISSUES Assignment #2 Emerging Issues Task Force   Abstract In 1982, the Financial Accounting Foundation Structure Committee produced a report on operating efficiency that indicated a need for more timely guidance on implementation questions. That report resulted in the formation of an advisory group, which evolved into the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF). This task force was established to assist the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in improving financial reporting through the timely identification, discussion, and resolution of financial accounting issues. (FASB, 2011) This paper discusses and explores the EITF in greater detail. Discuss how the Emerging Issues Task Force influences Generally Accepted Accounting Standards. The Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) was formed in 1984 to respond to the recommendations of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) task force on timely financial reporting guidance. The EITF influences general accepted accounting standards by providing improved financial reporting through timely identification, discussion, and resolutions within the framework of an existing authority. The EITF designed to reduce diversity in practice on current issues in a quick and timely manner that should not exceed three to four annual meetings. This advisory board also minimizes the need for the FASB to spend time and effort addressing narrow implementation, application, or other emerging issues that...

With the rising technology and E-commerce, Circuit City was not able to adapt to the changing environment and now Best Buy is on the same path as its former competitor. Best Buy had to close down fifty stores and fire over 400 employees due to its poor financial performance. Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn explained that there was no innovation by the company to adapt to the changing market on how consumers were purchasing electronics. Consumers are now price comparing with Best Buy’s products with online retailers. Online competitors of Best Buy are utilizing the new emerging technologies to help make purchasing of products convenient to the consumers. Problem Statement Best Buy is on a slow downward slope towards bankruptcy, if the company does not have any new innovation in the way it sells its products to consumers. Best Buy needs to understand how consumers are purchasing electronics and restructure how its employees are interacting with customers. Amazon is taking advantage of being an online retailer which means that Best Buy has to take advantage of their physical locations. Alternative Solutions One of the strategies Best Buy can implement is to offer a price match guarantee to the customers if they can find a lower price than Best Buy’s products then Best Buy will match the price. This strategy will attract more customers...
