...the summer was hot From an astronomical view, the equinoxes and solstices would be the middle of the respective seasons,[1][2] but a variable seasonal lag means that the meteorological start of the season, which is based on average temperature patterns, occurs several weeks later than the start of the astronomical season.[3] According to meteorologists[4][5],summer extends for the whole months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere. Under meteorological definitions, all seasons are arbitrarily set to start at the beginning of a calendar month and end at the end of a month.[6] This meteorological definition of summer also aligns with the commonly viewed notion of summer as the season with the longest (and warmest) days of the year, in which daylight predominates. The meteorological reckoning of seasons is used in Austria, Denmark and the former USSR; it is also used by many in the United Kingdom, where summer is thought of as extending from mid-May to mid-August. In Ireland, the summer months according to the national meteorological service, Met Éireann, are June, July and August. However, according to the Irish Calendar summer begins 1 May and ends 1 August. School textbooks in Ireland follow the cultural norm of summer commencing on 1 May rather than the meteorological definition of 1 June. From the astronomical perspective, days continue to lengthen from equinox to solstice and...

...Summer 2014: End of Junior Year This marks the first time I fully listened to Summer Death by Marietta, an album that remains as one of the most significant albums in my short life. I was struck with sadness about having to go back to school in less than a week, so I went for a drive in the middle of a late August day as an attempt to take my mind off the inevitable. Only having heard a couple of Marietta songs, I decided that the death of my own summer was the perfect time to listen to their debut in its entirety. I remember ‘Cinco de Mayo Shit Show’ standing out the most with its infectious gang vocal chorus, “I’m getting to old for this shit, I’m throwing fits and acting like a kid again!” Satisfied with myself for picking an appropriate...

...surround a love story or the search of a true love. Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977) and Marc Webb’s 500 Days of Summer (2009) are both movies that fall under the genre “Romantic Comedy”. These two movies are connected in many ways, for each film contains relatable characters and effective narrative techniques to portray a realistic relationship. Each film is also able to portray the differences between the reality and expectations of a relationship in humorous ways that allow them to be called a romantic comedy. Alvy and Tom are two different characters with separate mindsets. In 500 Days of Summer, Tom Hansen, despite his passion to be an architect is an unmotivated greeting card writer who deeply believes in the concept of true love and soul mates. Whereas in Annie Hall, Alvy Singer is a pessimistic comedian and control freak that is seen changing things to benefit him. Both characters due to their attitudes on life and relationships bring forth different aspects that make them such unique and likable characters. Tom strongly believes that he will never be happy until he meets the person that he believes is ‘the one’ for him. Whereas with Alvy he pushes Annie and doesn’t fully accept either Annie’s insecurities or support her as she finds ways to work through them. Summer and Annie, like their male counterparts, are two different types of heroine. Summer is portrayed as a character who at first denies that true love exists and isn’t sure what she wants in life. Annie...

...angle of approximately 23.4 degrees. Thus, at any given time during summer or winter, one part of the planet is more directly exposed to the rays of the Sun. This exposure alternates as the Earth revolves in its orbit. Therefore, at any given time, regardless of season, the northern and southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons. The effect of axis tilt is observable from the change in day length, and altitude of the Sun at noon (the culmination of the Sun), during a year. Summer: Summer is the warmest of the four temperate seasons. Summer is the warmest season of the year when the sun shines directly on one half of the world. Usually, July and August are the hottest months of the summer season. Crops, trees, and other plants reach their full maturity in summer. Summer is traditionally associated with hot dry weather, but this does not occur in all regions. Summer is one of the seasons of a year which is the warmest. It falls between the seasons of spring and autumn. Summer is generally known to be the season which has the hottest and longest days in a year. The summer nights are usually smaller than those of winter. It is a very good season for outdoor activities like vacationing, swimming or simply lazing on the beach. Various tropical summer fruits like pineapples, watermelons, mangoes, berries, melons, and vegetables are abundant in summer. Construction: In higher latitude locations, summer is the time for road resurfacing, as winter ice and snow leaves potholes...

...Esteban Garcia ENG101W Sec. 1008 Ms. Dickerson 29 September 2011 Everlasting Youth In Josh Weil’s narrative “The Summer That Ended All Summers” he conveys the theme that liberty always ends along with youth. He uses several literary features, the most predominant being his vivid use of imagery in addition to his clever use of syntax, punctuation and tone. Weil manages to paint pictures that illustrate the sense of freedom and exploration. He then uses syntax along with certain punctuation to create a tone that mimics his imagery and expresses his sense of losing his liberty. The end result is a narrative that relays to its readers the theme that liberty ends along with youth. In Josh’s narrative he begins by alluding to what might have caused a spinal disk to burst and how it ended his summer in North Africa. Then he goes on to recounting the fun moments he had while a kid with his brother during summer. They would travel over the world. Some of the places Josh mentions in his narrative are,England, Scotland, France, Spain and even the city of light, Paris! Unfortunately this came to an end after Weil’s injury and now rests with his brother’s family, still thinking of exploration. The entire narrative is filled with imagery. In the beginning, Josh paints the image of freedom that he as a young person had. He begins by painting in the first paragraph vivid pictures pyramids and valiant scenes of men leaping from tussock to tussock. He does this throughout the his narrative...

...is better than nature. This beloved is immortal while nature seasons like summer have a short span of time. However, the problem is that the speaker compares something which is according to him immortal with something mortal. How can his beloved who is flesh and blood become eternal? Anyway, the speaker says that he can equate his beloved to immortality when he writes about her, because when he does so, he immortalizes her and only then she becomes immortal. Then, the speaker can compare his beloved to nature as he ensures the continuity of his works after his death, and when people read his works they will revive his beloved. The speaker begins his poem by asking a rhetorical question whether he should compare his beloved to a summer day. Then he says that his beloved is more lovely and more tempered. According to what have said before, the speaker gives several reasons why summer is less beautiful than his beloved. Summer winds shake the buds that emerged in spring, it ends too quickly, and the sun can get too hot or can be obscured by clouds. Here we can see that summer have unpleasant things that make it imperfect. The way that he describes the short summer seems like summer has a lease on the weather just like a person who might have a lease on car; summer can enter into and must abide by, agreement. The point here is that summer is fated to end. However, if we think about it, isn't summer also fated to begin every year, it happens in an infinite number of times...

...There is a lot of things I could of did this summer. But my whole summer involved baseball. That’s what I basically did all summer long and I really enjoyed playing it, I also played for two teams not one. There is this thing called travel baseball and it is getting enormous now and a lot or most baseball players play it. It is basically all summer long and you play in tournaments on the weekends, you could play up to around 3 games a day. Some tournaments start on Friday or Thursday and end on Sunday. Baseball is a 90% mental game that's what all the pro’s say. If you go up to the batter box and say in your head man i'm not going to hit the ball this kid is so good and i'm going to strikeout. Then you will not do good, but if you go...

...gradual action that is marked by physical growth and age. However, as one ends their journey to maturity, such a change is realized to be circuitous; adulthood is not marked by the steady change in seniority or corporeal growth but instead, by the rollercoaster of experiences one undergoes. Such experiences often carry deeper meaning and are representations of lessons and themes that one may carry with themselves for the rest of their life. In literature, incidents like these are referred to as symbols. Symbolism, in real life and fictional coming-of-age, is integral in the development of youth to adulthood. In the book, A Seperate Peace, author...

...David Updike - Summer Summary David Updike’s story “Summer” describes one summer holiday of a boy named Homer who is faced with the external conflict on an unrequited love. Homer, the protagonist, is spending the summer at his best friend, Fred’s home near the lake. The summer followed the usual flow of ‘athletic and boyhood fulfillment” (para11) for Homer and Fred. The tennis matches and hiking, alcohol and hanging out late at night and the reckless driving of both the car and the motorboat out on the lake was all there. However, what made it all special to Homer was that he had fallen in love with Fred’s sister, Sandra, the antagonist. Sadly, though, she did not seem to really notice him despite all the times they spent together, and so he suffers the heartache of regret and longing as he faces his conflict of an “unrequited” love. The climax of the story occurs at the very end of the summer when in a family setting, on the last night, both Homner and Sandra are on the same couch. Homer, in a “moment of breathless abandon” (para 16), settles his hand on the hollow of Sandra’s arch as she lay beside him. The conflict is then resolved when, from her reaction, he realized that she also loved him, but thought the love was in the end returned, that was as far as it would ever go. Student Response I think we can all relate to Homer’s situation; finding that one girl we fall in love with at sight but feeling that she does not return the feelings despite becoming close. One...

...In the novel, A Separate Peace, author John Knowles examined two characters, Gene Forrester and Finny, in which strong rivalry and even stronger friendship were analysed. John Knowles used the world around the boys to symbolize their relationship as it strengthened and weakened. This paper is going to explore the juxtapositions in the world of A Separate Peace that represented this rapport. The first of these comparisons are the differences between the summer session of Devon, the school these boys go to, and the winter session. The first few chapters of this book takes place during the summer session of Devon. During this impromptu school year, which was brought about by the school pushing the boys through high school faster so they may enlist...

...is that summer vacations hurt the children’s learning experience because every year when they come back, they have to re-learn what they have forgotten over the summer. Another side to the argument is that having a summer vacation is essential to growing up. School systems and communities have come up with many different options, and by the end of this paper you can decided which would best suit you. Through research we have found that since back in the 1800’s they have handled schooling in many different ways. Back then schools lacked a long summer vacation we are used to today. Their schooling was handled by them going to school from December to March, have a break, and then return mid-May to August. Other schools in this era had children from working families attend an eleven month school year, it served as a safe and inexpensive place for them to be. Since the 1900’s school districts around the country have offered a longer school year, involving shorter spread out vacations. As opposed to our system now, schooling around the world differs from ours here in America. They are not used to a short school year followed by a long vacation. Instead, children in countries such as Europe, Asia, and South America go to school more days per year, as well as more hours per day. On one side of the debate there is the families and communities that would like year-round schooling. Communities believe that it would save on costs for buildings that go unused during the summer vacations...

...Jealousy Controls Your Thoughts and Actions A Separate Peace by John Knowles explores the life of a teenage boy finding it hard to cope with the reality of adulthood right around the corner. The summer session is the only time the boys can be themselves and fool around while teachers are lenient, but all comes to an end when Finny breaks his leg, creating the winter session. The winter session is dark and doesn't have any excitement as Finny is not at school because of his injury. Finny was the only one ready to face the reality of the war and the adulthood inching closer to him as time flies by. Knowles uses symbolism in A Separate Peace to illustrate the similar meaning between symbols and the overall theme that jealousy can drive people...
