Nelson Mandela once said “Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future”. Compassion is one of the most admirable traits a human can be composed of because it connects us in various ways. There are multiple occurrences of compassion throughout the book. In the novel Ender’s Game the author Orson Scott Card uses foreshadowing to strongly support the theme of compassion that is portrayed by Ender.

In this novel there are multiple occasions where the theme compassion is expressed by Ender. The game tends to mess with Ender’s mind and memories. Ender’s most precious memories are of his sister, Valentine, and they know that so it is used to Ender’s disadvantage when expressed in the book, “As always the serpent waited in the tower room, unraveling itself from the rug on the floor. But this time Ender didn’t grind it underfoot. This time he caught it in his hands, knelt before it, and gently, so gently, brought the snake’s gaping mouth to his lips. And kissed. . . . Ender is not looked at as the one to kill. Ender has accidentally killed Bonzo and there are different reactions from people, some almost as if praising him. Ender is not sure about what he has done because as stated in the book, “All Ender could see, though, was the way Bonzo looked as Ender kicked upward into his groin. The empty, dead look in his eyes. He was already finished then. Already unconscious. His eyes were open, but he wasn’t thinking or moving anymore, just that dead, stupid look on his face, that terrible look” (p 212).Ender knows that Bonzo had meant to kill him.
