... Personal Responsibility and Academic Success To obtain academic success through personal responsibility individuals must take ownership of his or her goals. Prioritizing tasks, such as time management, identifying purpose and goal setting are essential in one’s path to success. Even though there may be outside influences that may change life’s course, personal responsibility is necessary for academic success because every choice made is one’s own responsibility and every individual can decide how to shape he or her future. Personal responsibility is the privilege to make his or her own choices and obligations in life. One would agree with famous author Stephen Covey’s explanation. “Look at the word responsibility - “response-ability” - the ability to choose your response. Highly proactive people recognize that responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice, based on values, rather than a product of their conditions, based on feeling” (Covey, 1989. Pg81) Personal responsibility involves working on one’s own character and skill development rather than blaming others for situations and circumstances. It means choosing to design a life full of purpose and worth. Academic success refers to one’s level of successfully completed schooling and ability to achieve individual success in curriculum studies. Colin...

...Working Worries Life is full of choices. Whether they are good or bad; they are still choices no matter what you label them as. Now with me being only twenty-two years old, I don’t believe that I have had to make too many crazy choices but when I think of significant choices that I have needed to make only one pops up into my mind. I think of my decision to begin college or not. This was difficult for me because I was ready to start my life in the “real world” as soon as I walked out of my high school doors on graduation day, so I began by getting a regular job. Little did I know that just a plain “job” was not going to be what I had envisioned. The reason why I think the decision to come to college is a big deal is because of all the other things that the decision affects. For example, starting college means that I need to focus a lot of my energy and attention to doing well in classes, where if I decided to just get another job, then I would have to focus on doing well with my work and my boss. Also starting college means that I need to take a loan out to help pay for my new education. I kept putting off the decision because of all the worries and fears I had about college work and the expenses that would come with my idea of a proper education. After working a few “dead end” jobs that could barely support the gas needed to drive to these “Jobs”, I made my decision. Obviously I decided on starting college, I decided on this course because I had been working straight...

...much choice do we really have when we want to purchase goods? Choice is something most people just assume they have when they are picking their cable company, choosing a bank, or even walking through your local food mart. The goal of this essay is to show that while at first glance choices may seem endless, but when you do a small amount of research you can quickly realize that most brands link back to the same parent company. The majority of foods, drinks, and health products we buy trace their way back to 10 major corporations. Society today has this false idea that they have a choice in what they buy at the grocery store. For example you may not like large soda companies and decide to not buy their products. But if you buy bottled water, sports drinks, energy drinks, or fruit juice chances are you are buying a brand from a soda producing parent company. Most retailers charge a fee to get products on the most visible shelves which keeps small companies away from your line of sight. This is because large consumer good companies have a special relationship with retailers. Like an “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine ideology”. Many of the products that you see on store shelves are direct competitors that are linked to the same company. “ConAgra sells six varieties of popcorn” (http://www.alternet.org/food/how-big-food-creates-illusion-choice-supermarket). Different brands of products is a ploy that most parent companies use to help give you a false idea of choice. This...

...Difficulty In Making An Important Decision Assignment: Describe a particular time in your life when you had difficulty making an important decision. During the course of our lifetimes we make many significant and difficult choices that affect us. These choices affect our personal and professional lives. Therefore, we make these choices with much thought and care. One of the most difficult and important decisions I have made was changing careers. Changing careers at this stage of my life, mid-life, was very difficult. Preparation for my new career required me to resign my job. The former position was providing a major portion of my family's income and most of the medical benefits. Some means of earning a living while preparing for a new career was foremost on my mind during this stage. If I spent to much time and energy pursuing a job to provide a means for supporting my family while retraining, I might not do a sufficient job of retraining for a new career. Another difficulty equally as important as the the financial one was the possibility of failing at a new endeavor or not being able to find a new job. These possibilities made me feel uncomfortable and insecure. If I failed or could not find a new position, what would my family think of me? Failing at a new career would also cause me to lose confidence in myself. These concerns, failure and financial, and not finding a new job made this decision very difficult. The decision...

...the 7 habits of highly effective people, I had gained knowledge and how to diligently apply these habits in my workplace as well as improving the quality of life. It may take several weeks of concentrated effort to break free from the "gravity" if old habits until new habits "kick in". Once developed, however, habits come naturally with little energy expended. In order to develop the habits, there is the maturity continuum where it shows the relationships among the 7 habits. It illustrates the stages of progression, how to become highly effective through moving from dependence to independence. For instance, we experience the private victory when we learn self-mastery and self-discipline (Habits 1-3). We then experience the public victory when we build deep, lasting, highly effective relationships with other people. (Habits 4 - 6). Habit 1 which is the habit of choice. It also means to be proactive in whatever we do.It results in increased influence, more self awareness, to become more initiative and to become the creative force of my life .The principle behind this habit is that one is free to choose and am responsible for the choices. By using proactive behavior instead of reactive behavior, the respond made will be based on principles and desired results rather then allowing outside influences to control their response. In my workplace, for example in Portable X-rays, when the workload gets too heavy, one should seek help from another colleague and use proactive language...

...Many do not look within themselves for a chance to succeed because they are unaware of how to do this. Self-discipline is displayed by people in choices that are made to achieve college success. Many are afforded the opportunity to ensure their success or to ensure their failure. If we were to ask everyday people where they would want to be they would all say somewhere successful. That is something that we all want for ourselves but is everyone willing to use their self-discipline to make the choices to achieve those dreams. Making dreams come true is not just wishing on a star or making a wish while blowing out birthday candles it is the choices that are made in life that will turn that dream into a reality. The definition of self-discipline can mean something different to each individual but to me it is the determination and control one uses on themself to make choices that will ensure success or will ensure that something is gained in their favor. Having the chance to make our own decisions in life that can affect our future should weigh heavily on us. When making choices people do not realize that the choice they make will have a result that they will be responsible for; whether it is good or bad. The success that many have achieved was not solely by pure luck, it was achieved by the determination they possessed and the choices they made to get to where they want to be with...

...ISFJ - The "Defender" Introversion Introversion is "the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one's own mental life".[4]Some popular writers have characterized introverts as people whose energy tends to expand through reflection and dwindle during interaction.[5] This is similar to Jung's view, although he focused on psychic energy rather than physical energy. Few modern conceptions make this distinction. The common modern perception is that introverts tend to be more reserved and less outspoken in groups. They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, using computers, hiking and fishing. The archetypal artist, writer, sculptor, engineer, composer and inventor are all highly introverted. An introvert is likely to enjoy time spent alone and find less reward in time spent with large groups of people, though he or she may enjoy interactions with close friends. Trust is usually an issue of significance: a virtue of utmost importance to an introvert is choosing a worthy companion. They prefer to concentrate on a single activity at a time and like to observe situations before they participate, especially observed in developing children and adolescents.[6] They are more analytical before speaking.[7] Introverts are easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation from social gatherings and engagement, introversion having even been defined by some in terms of a preference for a quiet, more minimally stimulating...

...your children to study at good schools, and then to enter prestigious universities, to travel all around the world and so on. Now you understand why you should take money into consideration when choosing a job. • Further training, promotion prospects and job conditions should also be kept in mind. Just after graduating it is very difficult to find a plum job which will respond to all your preferences. It is usually a monotonous, tedious clerical job, but if you are a capable and hard-working person, you will certainly be offered an opportunity to climb the ladder. • Place of work. You ought to decide whether you want to work indoors (cashier, chemist, librarian, secretary, etc.) or outdoors (driver, firefighter, estate agent, etc.). Your choice may be based on your lifestyle or health condition. • Full-time, part-time, flexitime jobs. There is no set pattern to part-time working. It may involve a later start and earlier finish time than a full-time position, working mornings or afternoons only, fewer working days in a week for less salary. It is a perfect variant for students who want to juggle their studies and work, as well as flexitime jobs. Employees decide by themselves when to begin and end their working day. • Communication with different people. Meeting and dealing with people doesn't appeal to every person. Some people are not very sociable; on the contrary,...

...The Ambiguity of the Impact of Life Choices By Stacy Tohar In the Road Not Taken by Robert Frost the reader is left with ambiguity about the personal impact on the traveler of choosing one road over the other, and therefore ambiguity about the impact on a person from making one life choice to the exclusion of another, as this poem is of course a poem about life choices. The definition of the word ambiguity is doubtfulness or uncertainty of meaning or intention. It is unclear whether the subject of the poem, the traveler, feels contentment, regret, or both about his choice of roads. However, from the poem’s conclusion, it appears that the author intended that the ambiguity remain without resolution, just as is often the case with life choices and the impact of those choices. In the Road Not Taken, the traveler stands at a fork in the road and must choose one road over the other. Of course, this is a metaphorical fork, symbolizing life choices and paths. Knowing that he must choose one road over the other, the traveler attempts to look as far down the way as possible in an attempt to see where each road will take him. This is as in life, where we must attempt to visualize the impact of choosing one life choice over another. However, as with life choices, the traveler cannot see the consequences of one choice over the other with any certainty: “And looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth.”(4-5). The traveler can only see that one road...

...Questions 1. Explain how the concepts of scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost relate to your dilemma. The concepts of all three relate to my dilemma because they all focus on a choice that I have to make. The scarcity in my dilemma is that I don’t have a lot of time to be home with family and be deployed on ships in the ocean. The choice in my dilemma is I have to choose either to stay home with family and friends and not be successful or become a Merchant Seaman and be successful and proud f what I made out of my life. The opportunity cost in my dilemma is that I have to give up laughter, fun, and games with family. 2. When making a decision, are the costs and benefits equally important to you? Why or why not? Based on your chart, explain which category, costs or benefits, would have the largest impact on your decision? No they are not because the costs is the things you will have to give up and the benefits is the good you get out of the dilemma choice you made. To me the costs category would have a big impact on my decision because to me family is important, I don’t like being without my family so by me having to leave them an giving them me up I would really be heartbroken and lonely. 3. Based on the chart and your responses to the above questions, what will be your final choice? Write a brief paragraph with at least three details to persuade your instructor that this is the best decision. My final choice would be to become a Merchant Seaman....

...The illusion of choice. This is a tale of a man called Harold. Harold worked at a fast food restaurant; he stood at his station day in and day out looking up at a screen. The screen told him what to cook, how to cook it and where to put it once he had cooked it. He was happy with his job, his wife, his life. But then all of a sudden, when he was standing at his station he looked up at the screen and nothing was there, there were no instructions or directions to tell him what to do. Harold felt a small unfamiliar feeling of uncertainty and before he knew it, Harold had already begun his adventure. Harold stood at his station for a while; he noticed how time began to drift away faster and faster whilst his glazed eyes stared up at the screen. He had no idea how long had passed. Minutes? Hours? Days? Months? He knew that he would have to brave leaving his station soon. So, with this in mind, he took a sharp breath and lowered his spatula, giving him a grand feeling of dropping a great burden from himself. He pulled his eyes away from the screen and looked towards the exit sign on his right, can Harold do it? Can he drop the world he knows to adventure into a world unknown? Harold slowly approached the sign and opened the large metallic door beneath it. Once he opened the large door he came to another room, a clean and well-furnished room with a set of two opened doors which lay in front of him alongside each other. Upon seeing these doors, Harold took the door on his right. But...

...shortcomings that the organization would not be able to overcome. I have weighed the thought process of hiring because of a favor and would it be possible to truly appreciate the work ethics of someone you hired unethically. The entry-level position at VJ Productions entails significant dedication and attention to detail. The position will require the applicant fulfill all job descriptions and duties. There will be no additional training, the job will be fast paced and the necessity to implement task immediately. In all fairness to the position, there can be no favoritism or special preferential treatment. The moral high ground is the best choice for the job, the company and the fellow employee’s involved. Nevertheless hiring and eager worker that is willing to learn and dedicated to making things happen would be the best choice for the position. ...or freewill is what governs us. This leaves the human mind to debate if the choices in our lives are really choices that we have been left free to make on our own or if we are simply provided the illusion of choice by a higher power that controls our destinies. In the film, The Adjustment Bureau, David Norris, who is the main character in the film is told that Elise, the woman he pursues through love, is about to become “one of the most famous dancers in the country, and eventually one of the world’s greatest choreographers. If she stays with [David], she ends up teaching dance to six year olds” (George Nolfi). Not to crush Elise’s dreams and interfere with her bright future, David ends his pursuit of her much in the same way that Oedipus leaves his father, “the man whom Oedipus, long ago, feared so, fled so, in dread of destroying him” (56). Both David and Oedipus leave their loved ones behind to avoid causing harm to them, but through fate, harm comes to them anyways. Elise is emotionally crushed without David in her life, and Oedipus inadvertently kills his own father. Through fate, one can argue that the pain that Elise and Oedipus’ father incur are unavoidable and that the illusion of choice was only granted to David and Oedipus in order to give the appearance that such pain could be avoided. Fate may be given and the destination chosen, but the journey is malleable and full of choices for us to make whenever we find ourselves at a crossroad. The Adjustment...
