The amount of money spent on one person for energy is $3,460, according to a 2009 study done by EIA State Energy Data. In that 2009 study in the state of Pennsylvania, where I currently reside, Pennsylvania spent $3,437.40 per person. This number is a difference of $23.32 from the US average. Pennsylvania stands at a rank of 31 out of the 50 states. Can you guess what the state that takes the number one spot? Alaska. Alaska spent $7,684.06 per person in the year 2009. This number makes a difference of $4,223.33 from the US average (EIA, 2009). Every day from the minute you wake up to the minute you go to bed you are using some sort of energy. For the past couple of days I have really tried to look at all the different types of energy that I have used. The first source of energy that I noticed I use a lot of is electrical energy. We use this energy for basically everything that we come in contact with; cell phone chargers, laptops, television, lamps, refrigerators and even your car’s battery. Even though you will always use this energy every day, the amount of the energy can vary. In 12 days we will be turning our clocks for daylight savings, and in this case this is help us save on energy because it will stay daylight out longer so you will not need to turn on the lights so early. Another way energy usage can change is with the seasons. When it starts to become colder in October, you are going to start to turn your heat up a little more. As it continues into the winter months you are going to use more gas and electricity to power your house. When the time of daylight savings start to approach, a whole new type of energy is going to be used. In the summers months starting around June, people are going to

Energy Use

...Personal Energy Use My current energy usage consists of many forms of energy, mainly fossil fuels. In the home I use natural gas for cooking, and electricity for heat, hot water, and appliance usage. There is one other form of energy I use in the home and that is wood, a biofuel, as fuel to burn in the fireplace to help heat the house in the winter. On my way to work I use gasoline, another fossil fuel, as energy for transportation. While at work there is a large amount of energy usage, from powering the computer monitors all the way to supplying the power for ventilators so patients can breathe. My energy needs fluctuate throughout the year, as the summers and winters in Pennsylvania can be at the extremes. My energy usage in the summer is much lower than the winter. I rarely use my central air for cooling in the summer as I find opening the windows or spending time in the basement just as comforting. The days are longer which limits the amount of electricity I use for lighting. I do spend quite a bit of time traveling to the beach in the summer which uses a lot of gasoline. In the winter my energy consumption rises as the temperature drops. Electricity increases as the house needs to be heated and the days grow shorter increasing the light needed. The energy sources I rely on come mainly from fossil fuels, a non-renewable form of energy. Fossil fuels include coal, petroleum, oil and make up approximately 82% of the United States energy demand ( Institute for Energy Research)...

How Rockets Use Energy

...Rockets use Energy Rockets use and convert energy many times while operating. First of all, energy is the ability to do work or to organize or change matter. That energy is what moves the rocket. But first the energy starts out in the rocket fuel, as chemical potential energy. Potential energy is stored energy that is in an object due to the positioning of its parts. In model rocket engines, the fuel is made out of pressed black powder. The fuel is stored in a cartridge, which gets placed in the bottom of the rocket. Chemical potential energy changes into heat when the engine is ignited, turning the potential energy into kinetic energy which is energy in the form of motion. Heat is kinetic energy because heat is how fast atoms in an object vibrate, which is motion. When the rocket fuel ignites, it expands. When the heat is created, the fuel becomes a gas and expands out the bottom of the rocket. The force pushing down pushes the rocket in the opposite direction, up. Isaac Newton’s 3rd law of motion explains this reaction: “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” That means that when you push down, you will go up. When the expanding gas pushes the rocket up, the gas loses energy, and the rocket gains kinetic energy. This is because a force that changes an object's motion gives that object energy. When a rocket engine starts firing, it starts accelerating, which causes it to gain more kinetic energy. When an object’s speed increases, its kinetic energy also increases...

Marine Environmental Impact and Energy Use

...Marine environmental impact and energy use Bridging the environmental gap in shipping Faced with current and anticipated legislation, increasing customer environmental awareness among cargo owners and passengers plus fuel cost rises, there has never been a better time for the senior management of shipping companies to rationalise their company’s energy use. Stuart Melling, manager for marine and crane service at ABB Ltd., examines some of the options. From emissions reduction, improved fuel use through to the environmental impact of new builds, the shipping industry faces a challenging future. Emissions reduction In 2007 the global shipping industry is estimated to have emitted 1,046 million tonnes of CO2, which is some 3.3 percent of total global emissions. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) predicts a 250 percent rise in emission levels as a result of expanding sea transport, if suitable energy efficiency policies are not implemented. Yet legislation has in many respects by-passed the shipping sector as reflected by its exclusion from international agreements such as the Kyoto protocol. Even though shipping is recognised as the cleanest form of transporting goods, with the least damage per tonne of cargo, ship exhaust emissions are regarded as the industry's biggest polluter. So although the marine industry has consistently resisted taking any significant measures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, it now looks like it will finally bow to...

Energy Sources and Uses in Greece and E.U.

...1010 INSTRUCTOR: TITLE: ENERGY SOURCES AND USES IN GREECE AND E.U. Introduction: The primary energy sources in our days are fossil fuels which are the natural gas, oil, coal, the nuclear power and other renewable sources, and as a secondary energy source, the electricity power. In Greece 86.3% of primary energy sources come from fossil fuels and especially 85.4% is coal. Coal has a high environmental impact when burned, because of the huge amount of soot and carbon dioxin released in the atmosphere, but also has a direct impact in our health, for example can cause asthma. This huge consumption can be explained because in Greece 70% of electricity comes from coal. Most European countries depend in the use of fossil fuels. But as it referred above, fossil fuels are extremely dangerous to our planet and for our health. So we must find a solution in reducing the consumption of these harmful energy sources and focus in the increase of consumption of the renewable sources which have the least environmental impact. The start has been made. European Union, decided to reduce by 20% the carbon emissions, compared to 1999, until 2020. This step brings us closer to the use of Renewable energy. Use of Renewable Energy Technologies for Desalination

...Use of renewable energy technologies for desalination Wang Shuxian z3452701 Abstract Only about 0.25% of total fresh water, which is only 3% of total water in global world, could directly supply for the most needs of human beings and animals. Another significant impact is due to rapid population growth, causing severe fresh water scarcity. Other factors include rapid industrial growth, industrial wastes and sewage discharged and climate change. It would be feasible to overcome the water scarcity through seawater desalination; however, if seawater containing high salinity is converted to fresh water by desalination, it consumes large amounts of energy. Therefore, it is important to find suitable alternative energy resources for the desalination technology due to conventional fossil fuels crisis and environmental pollution. Renewable energy is commonly alternative energy sources considered for desalination, including solar thermal energy, solar photovoltaics, wind energy, hybrid solar PV-wind energy and geothermal. Renewable energy can power the desalination systems comprising comprise the phase change processes, which include the multistage flash, multiple effect boiling and vapour compression and membrane processes, which include reverse osmosis and electrodialysis. Finally, the paper will discuss the best renewable energy powered desalination systems. How Does Australia Use Wave Energy

...Introduction Wave energy is the transfer of energy by water waves which is then captured to perform useful work such as generation of electricity and water desalination. This energy is produced when electricity generators are kept at the surface of the ocean and then propelled by the ocean waves. The Wave Energy Converter (WEC) machine is used to exploit wave power into useful form of electric energy. The WEC’s are attached to special turbines, buoys and other machineries that capture the power of waves and tides and combine them into pollution-free electricity (Aux 2010). The energy produced usually depends on the height of the wave, the speed of the wave, the wavelength and the density of water. The use of wave energy varies considerable...

In the past several decades scientists have warned that coal and oil have been diminishing and that it could take thousands of years for the earth to replenish what we have already used. With that being said finding other resources of energy is crucial to the conservation of our way of life as we know it. Evidence has shown that the U.S. relies heavily on oil, coal, and natural gas for its energy. So finding new ways to substitute these sources of energy through renewable energy like wind, and sunlight needs to be a high priority for local and state governments nationwide. In this paper I will explain why the need for renewable energy is so important to the environment and our way of life. I will speak specifically on the many types of renewable...

...family members lived in a single room, and sometimes brought their animals in to protect them from burglars and other predators. Their homes had no windows, and had a single opening in the roof to allow the smoke to escape.] Since that Celtic era, a lot of factors have changed in the way homes are built. Houses built as recently as 30-40 years ago might have all basic amenities, and make for a very comfortable living, but what’s important is that has energy efficiency been an integral component of these homes? Has any effort been made to allow for rationing of the non-renewable resources on which we rely for our survival? Citing the example of quite a few houses in my area, I can safely generalize that most people aren’t even aware the homes can be built in an energy efficient manner. Using solar devices to do some of your daily work constitutes energy efficiency for most people. And that is where the buck stops for them. It must be understood that usage of solar devices is only a very small part of how homes can be made more energy efficient....
