...Ashton Ben February 13, 2014 ENG 101 MWF 12 # 2 Profile My Island Escape Ever since I was a little kid I knew where I always dreamed of living. My dream home would be more than I could ever imagine. It would be on a bright and warm island. With the white sand all around me, bright from the glistening of the sun, to the feel of the breeze blowing up to the shore and the sound of the beautiful aqua blue waves. As I walk up to the house all I imagine to see is a big porch overlooking the island. I see a two story house with maybe 3 bedrooms or so, not too big. It should be rustic, in a light colored wood or a nice colored plaster, with big windows where I can sit on the windowsill and look out on the island. It will be bright with a light sense and feel to it. Sitting with crisp white rocking chairs so that every evening as the sun goes down I can lose myself in the calm sound of the waves. Where I can be evincible over anything and everything life throws at me. What will be light and cozy from the inside as if you were sitting in the sand, relaxing and not a care in the world about anything stressful. The living room will have huge windows overlooking the gorgeous blue water and will give the room a nice lightning in the day and when the evening comes there will be plenty of candles lit for the warmth feel in the room. With a built in couch all the way down the room so me and my little family could spend hours playing games. The kitchen is a very important room...

...“Media as a reliable source ”: Argumentative Essay by Janna Frandrup ENG 101, Section 12153 Dr. James Sanders July 1, 2009 “Media as a reliable source”: Argumentative Essay The use of media as a reliable source has been tainted through scandal, such as Watergate and Janet Cooke. When stories sound unbelievable, they usually are. In 1981, a young aspiring journalist wrote a compelling story about an 8 year old boy. Jimmy was described as a third-generation heroin addict, a precocious little boy with sandy hair, velvety brown eyes, needle mark freckles, and the baby-smooth skin of his thin brown arms. Who could resist a story about this boy? The media could not. This story is one example of how the media we see, hear and read are unreliable sources of information. Once one reads Janet Cooke’s article “Jimmy’s World,” they feel empathy and sadness for this boy. The media allowed the public to see a lifestyle different than what we knew. It was said that the article was based on interviews with the boy, his mother and his mother's boyfriend. However, Cooke, the journalist wrote a hoax article about a young boy to get higher ratings and praise to receive the best prize a journalist can receive. Later, Janet Cooke, an African American journalist in 1981 was given a Pulitzer Prize for her article on Jimmy. The world believed this story. This story was published and printed on the front cover of the newspaper. The world was shocked and felt a sense of disbelief...

...Naomi Reyes February 26, 2015 Eng 101 Comp and Lit I Professor Jessica Ulmer “Flor Palida”- Marc Anthony I chose this song because it is a one of Marc Anthony’s latest songs; it reflects his love for his wife and how he compares her to a delicate flower. Anthony writes his music to show people that you can find love anywhere and experiment the beauty it has to offer. Even though Marc Anthony is describing a flower, the language he uses leads the listener to understand that he is actually talking about his lover. Music wise, this song represents a strong love in Anthony’s life. Up until the early and mid 90’s, Anthony was known as a backup singer and he later on was songwriter. His music usually composed of freestyle and house and was later on changed to salsa and other Spanish music. This song represents Anthony’s new life that he will encounter with his former wife Shannon De Lima. The music of this song has a very romantic yet enthusiastic feel to it which may represent the love he has towards former wife. The lyrics to "Flor Palida" tell a wonderful love story that has come to be what is now a reality. I believe that the flower was intended to represent a beautiful woman. He says in the second stanza “recuperó el color que había perdido, porque encontró un cuidador que la regara; regained the color that was lost, because it found a caregiver who watered it”. This symbolizes that the woman slowly started to form a liking towards him, and unfolded to show him the...

...Thomas Annunziato Professor Eglevsky Eng. 101 12 March 2013 Space Exploration And Everyday Life The United States is in debt, about 14 trillion bucks out of the game.(whitehouse.gov) And we have about 12 million individuals out of work.(BLS) So what are we doing about it? Here in the good ole U.S. of A. we have this thing called the sequester which is set up to limit the federal budget, you know to put a cap on things makes sense right? But doesn't the government fund programs that keeps its citizens employed? The answer is yes that's the whole point of stimulus programs and in some way or another government's whole budget. So when the government gets together and looks at what to cut for the sequester they seem to weigh what seems to be important to the people and what's not important. The disturbing result is the lack of funding and respect space programs get. I know, I know the "fact" that the moon is mad of cheese is good enough for a lot of people and seems to satisfy the masses but I have news for you NASA and the drive of space exploration has given the people of the world more than just the real truth of what the moon is made of. A 1999 Gallup poll found that 18 percent of American adults believed that the sun revolved around earth with 3 percent unsure.(Andrews). Not only that according to a 2004 Science Foundation study 32 percent of adults thought that astrology was either "sort of scientific" or "very scientific".(Andrews). How...

...Kaity Del Villar ENG 101-114 Brett Houser 27 August 2014 Grand Times After school every day my sister, Kara, and I would go to my grandfathers house to wait for our mom to get off work. This was the regular until about eighth grade when my mom decided she could trust me to watch over things at our house until she came home. But visits to my grandpa were still regular things. We would go to his house at least once a day. My grandpa was a typical “Get off my lawn you stinking kids” old man. He was a soldier. He was a weekend alcoholic. He wasn’t a very affectionate man. He didn’t say I love you. Ever. I said it to him one time but all he did was “Eh”. Though me and my grandpa were extremely close. We built many things together. We made a go cart out of a ride mower, built a porch, and built a shed. I feel like that was his way of showing his affection. He only lived a few blocks away when he decided to come live with us. He was 75 and couldn’t really live on his own anymore. My mom was pretty much his care giver. Living with parkinsons wasn’t easy for an artist. He was an extremely talented artist, but when the parkinsons started to get really bad, it was clear how it affected his art work. My grandpa and I tried to get along most of the time but when he moved in it became more and more difficult. I was only 15 and going through that “you’re not the boss of me” kind of stage. He was the old man who hated teenagers. Some might say there was a lot of yelling around the...

...REVIEW D. Ryan Georgianna1 & Stephen P Mayfield1 . doi:10.1038/nature11479 Exploiting diversity and synthetic biology for the production of algal biofuels Modern life is intimately linked to the availability of fossil fuels, which continue to meet the world’s growing energy needs even though their use drives climate change, exhausts finite reserves and contributes to global political strife. Biofuels made from renewable resources could be a more sustainable alternative, particularly if sourced from organisms, such as algae, that can be farmed without using valuable arable land. Strain development and process engineering are needed to make algal biofuels practical and economically viable. D espite limited supply and increasing demand, fossil fuels remain among the world’s cheapest commodities. Prices will inevitably rise once demand starts to outstrip supply, but short- to medium-term replacement of fossil fuels by renewable and more environmentally benign alternatives will occur only if the substitutes can compete economically. One of these alternatives is based on the oils extracted from algae, and commercial-scale pilot facilities to test these are in operation. However, significant improvements are still needed to make algal biofuels economically viable. In this Review, we outline the advantages of algae as a biofuel producer, discuss the different cultivation methods, consider the options for achieving optimal algal biomass and lipid production, and the process engineering...

...MATTHIAS HILD* The Google IPO initial public offerings (IPOs) since Netscape's public offering in 1995.' Bullish investors believed Google could set off a string of successful IPOs and put an end to a fouryear lull in technology offerings. 2 Executives at Google faced several questions in the following months, beginning with whether or not to sell shares to the public market.' If they made the decision to take the company public, what options did Google have for selling those shares? Was the traditional form of book-building through an investment bank necessarily the best course of action? As large investment banks were courting Google's potentially enormous business, management had to evaluate the different options available for a company ready to move forward. Ultimately, Google chose to sell its stock through W.R. Hambrecht + Co.'s OpenIPO, which was modeled on auction-based offering formats in France, Japan and elsewhere. In 2004, Hambrecht's track record of success was mixed at best and even today the future of this IPO format in the United States is far from certain. IN THE SPRING OF 2004, GOOGLE WAS ONE OF THE MOST TALKED-ABOUT I.
