Engineering Overview The Field
Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between perceived social needs and commercial applications. Engineers design products, machinery to build those products, plants in which those products are made, and the systems that ensure the quality of the products and the efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process. Engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, and transit systems. They develop and implement improved ways to extract, process, and use raw materials, such as petroleum and natural gas. They develop new materials that both improve the performance of products and take advantage of advances in technology. They harness the power of the sun, the Earth, atoms, and electricity for use in supplying the Nation's power needs, and create millions of products using power. They analyze the impact of the products they develop or the systems they design on the environment and on people using them. Engineering knowledge is applied to improving many things, including the quality of healthcare, the safety of food products, and the operation of financial systems. Engineers consider many factors when developing a new product. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers determine precisely what function the robot needs to perform; design and test the robot's components; fit the components together in an integrated plan; and evaluate the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. This process applies to many different products, such as chemicals, computers, gas turbines, helicopters, and toys. In addition to design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine

Usage of Applicable Mathematics in Biomedical Engineering (Macro and Micro Biomechanics)

...Usage of Applicable Mathematics in Biomedical Engineering (Macro and Micro Biomechanics) Biomedical engineering is an emerging discipline which links medicine, biology, and technology in order to tackle medical problems using an engineering approach. As such, it is heavily influenced by engineering principles and uses applicable mathematics in nearly all of its aspects. It is important to note that applied mathematics (vector algebra, calculus, numerical approaches to solving functions, etc.) is a language, which evolved to serve the needs of science and particularly those of classical (Newtonian) mechanics. Thus, it describes and explores natural phenomena using mathematical functions and relations. As biomedical engineering incorporates many engineering spheres, it employs applicable mathematics in numerous situations. The following is an overview of the applications of mathematics in solving macro-biomechanical, and micro and nano-scale challenges in biomedical engineering. Biomechanics is a field of biomedical engineering which analyses the behaviour of structures and materials in biological or medical applications [1]. It is closely related to the field of prosthetics and uses mathematical analysis to design and test better devices. Dynamic analysis of systems involves constructing free-body diagrams and resolving forces acting on the components. Using partial derivatives and integration can vastly simplify biomechanical problems by switching between the domains...

...Lab #3 Inverter Tutorial: Layout, DRC, Extraction, LVS and Back Annotating Parastics Yong Li Partner: Hao Zhang Group #2 10/10/2012 EEN532 GF Objective In this lab, we were asked do the layout of Inverter using the design rules for the AMI C5N (λ=0.3μ) fabrication process. Specifically, we need to do some hand-on experience on how to complete the physical design (layout), design rule check (DRC), parameter extraction, layout vs. schematic (LVS) and Back Annotating Parastics from Layout to Schematic using the Cadence tools. Software LSW and Virtuoso Layout Editor We need to create a layout cellview, check it and simulate it in the software Procedure and Data First of all, we need to create the layout Cellview in LSW and Virtuoso Layout Editing Window. According to the instruction, we set up the display, and then we could draw everything in the layout. We also need to pay attention to the positions and the size. We drew the VDD, VGND, NMOS, PMOS, N-Well as well as all the contacts. We had to choose the correct color and the name of every component in the LSW. After that, we would connect transistors Nodes to Match schematic and Form the Inverter. And then we added the pins, which include vdd, vgnd, vin, and vout pins. The layout was like the following: The next step was to design rule check, which to test if our layout drawing obeys the design rule. When the CIW shows “Total errors found: 0”, our design rule check is successful. Furthermore, we were...

Gender Wage Sex Gap, and Segregation in the Work Place

...Wage Gap, and Sex Segregation Gender Exercise #1 During my investigation I noticed that the occupations that I am interested in pursuing cater mostly to males. The professions that interest me are Engineering, Chemistry, and Anesthesiology. I came across an article that discussed the pay differences between male's, and female's in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) profession's. According to a data study provided by the American Chemical Society (ACS) male chemists earned thirty percent more than female chemists. The findings of their research showed that eighty-three percent of the wage gap is due to differences in work ethic, and productivity, while the remaining seventeen percent is because of discrimination, and other unmeasured allegations. The information that I obtained from the National Society of Professional Engineers, in 2004 there were approximately 192,900 female engineers (62,000 were software engineers) throughout the United States, compared to the overwhelming number of men in this profession, at over 1,515,000. Women are more likely to get hired in the environmental, and chemical engineering fields than men are. However, women are less likely to get hired in the mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering professions than men. In 2006 females made up approximately one quarter of all engineers under the age of 25 in the United Stated. After researching the field of Anesthesiology I found that men are...
