...SAMPLE ESSAY #1 -- Good Example Nursing is a Way of Life When contemplating a career choice, psychologists often suggest revisiting the activities that one took pleasure in as a child. Unwittingly, children engross themselves wholeheartedly in activities that bring them the greatest delight and contentment. As adults, those qualities equate to stimulation and satisfaction–two elements necessary to sustain a successful career. In my youth, I enjoyed playing “schoolteacher,” more importantly however, from the ages of six to fifteen, I tended to the needs of my chronically ill grandmother. During this period of time, the idea of playing nurse never crossed my mind; rather, care giving was a way of life. The magnitude of influence that caring for my grandmother had in shaping my career decisions is immense; although it was unknown to me for quite some time. A distinct correlation was made early in my employment as a Clinical Assistant at Seton Medical Center. While holding the hand of a patient, as he passed through the stages of a stroke, I recognized the tone and delivery of my words as that which I used when comforting my grandmother during a similar event. Amidst the chaos of the medical team, I became overwhelmed with a sense of complete wholeness that I had not felt before. I become acutely aware that my childhood care giving role had provided me with a unique ability to invest myself fully into the health and wellbeing of others, in the very same way that I had done with...

...How to Make a Sand Castle For young and old alike, a trip to the beach means relaxation, adventure, and a temporary escape from the worries and responsibilities of ordinary life. Whether swimming or surfing, tossing a volleyball or just snoozing in the sand, a visit to the beach means fun. The only equipment you need is a twelve-inch deep pail, a small plastic shovel, and plenty of moist sand. Making a sandcastle is a favorite project of beach-goers of all ages. Begin by digging up a large amount of sand (enough to fill at least six pails) and arranging it in a pile. Then, scoop the sand into your pail, patting it down and leveling it off at the rim as you do. You can now construct the towers of your castle by placing one pail full of sand after another face down on the area of the beach that you have staked out for yourself. Make four towers, placing each mound twelve inches apart in a square. This done, you are ready to build the walls that connect the towers. Scoop up the sand along the perimeter of the fortress and arrange a wall six inches high and twelve inches long between each pair of towers in the square. By scooping up the sand in this fashion, you will not only create the walls of the castle, but you will also be digging out the moat that surrounds it. Now, with a steady hand, cut a one-inch square block out of every other inch along the circumference of each tower. Your spatula will come in handy here. Of course, before doing this, you should use the spatula to smooth...

...ENGL 1213 20 January 2012 Paulo Freire takes us back to his house in Recife, Brazil where he was born and describes to us the birds, trees, and structure of his home. It is here that Paulo begins to learn to read and have his first experiences with letters, texts and words. Every one of our students’ first experiences with the written word is never going to be the exact duplicate of another. “The texts, the words, the letters of that context were incarnated in a series of things, objects, signs…in perceiving these, I experienced myself, and the more I experience myself, the more my perceptual capacity increased” (Freire 282). The texts, letters and words would take on images of items of Freire’s world and the more he read the more images and signs would emerge. Reading was something Freire did by using words from his world, which was further continued in his education. In his mention of a private school lessons in regards to reading was its’ congruent relationship with reading word-world. In our school systems today it is very important to realize this word-world relationship is different for every student. The images and signs being brought out by texts, letters, and words can be very different from their classmate. In trying to incorporate culturally relevant pedagogical lessons as teachers we can include a variety of different texts and literature in our classroom and expect that each of our students will have different views and understanding of the text. In Freire’s...

...Susan Hoehing ENGL 1150-005 3 April 2008 Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. It is a part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. Currently, 1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed with autism, which makes it more common than even pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Autism can occur in all racial, ethnic, and social groups but it is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. It impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others, and is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe. Debates over the cause of autism have been battling for a very long time, yet there is still not an answer. Majority of people blame the disorder on vaccines administrated to children while they are young. Many activists have claimed that autism rates have skyrocketed since many of these vaccines were mandated for children. The two vaccines thought to be the cause of autism are the MMR, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, and thimersal which contained a mercury preservative up until seven years ago. Because of this belief many people have reframed from getting their children and themselves vaccinated against life-threatening diseases. Then in 2000 an Immunization Safety Review Committee was formed by the Institute of Medicine to investigate. Their conclusion...

...Raising Children the Second Time Around Being a grand-parent today can no longer be considered a traditional role. Long gone are the days when we spoiled our grand-children and sent them “home” with mommy and daddy. With both social (neglect, child abuse, drugs and jail) and economic (lower wages, higher expenses) pitfalls of today more and more grand-children are being raised solely by their grand-parents. According to the 2010, Census there are over four and a half million children raised in grand-families. My role as a grand-mother, to Piper Reanne, was drastically changed from spoiler and nurturer to that of the parent in the fall of 2005. After financial hardships, incidents of neglect and other safety concerns, my daughter and I sat down to discuss me becoming Piper’s “primary” caregiver. After contacting the Clerk of the Court, we wrote the Caregiver Authorization, which is nothing more than a notarized letter, filed a copy with the court and Piper moved into my home. The long forgotten sound of a child laughing, a full on belly laugh, once again filled my home. My days of sleeping in late, getting up and going wherever and whenever I wanted were a thing of the past. I had to adjust back to packing a bag before going anywhere and doing everything for two. Our lives moved forward. In the fall of 2007, Piper was taken, by her mother without permission from her paternal grand-parents while they were on a shopping trip to Wal-Mart. While...

...Movement 1.What did “movement’ begin to refer to after the two world wars? What are some examples? “Movement” began to refer specifically to groups of people coming together to seek political, economic, cultural, but especially social change. For example, the us civil rights, black power, anti-war student, women’s ecology and gay movements promoted a new label: social movements. 2.What are three features of the “new social movements”? The new social movements frequently rejected or offered revision to the political theories that predominated. The new social movements had more generalized demand. The target of new social movements was as much as prevailing mainstream attitudes as it was swaying the electorate or changing state administrative practices. Resistance 3.What was the “different twist” that resistance took after the second world war? It formed in 1940 by “patriot” committed to repulsing the occupying the forces of Nazi Germany. Therefore, this national-popular image took a different twist, in the rhetoric of anti-colonist and third world struggles aimed against the western nations themselves. 4.What are some examples of “social groups” that resist? Resistance to the capitalist and capitalism by the industrial working class, women’s resistance to patriarchy; ethic minority resistance to white “cultural imperialism”; children’s resistance to parents’ power; resistance of global “South” to the global “North”. ...Significant events among the Greek empire have developed a stimulating effect on English education around the globe. This has created a lasting effect on people and it’s uncommon to not have a familiarity with Greek tragedies. Most people do not take the time to think about the elements that make them tragedies or make the characters in them tragic heroes. In one of the “earliest surviving works of dramatic theory” of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, he laid out his rules for what is the foundation of a tragedy and a tragic hero. In the play by Sophocles, Oedipus stands out as a classic representation of what a tragedy hero is. Oedipus the book has key aspects that Aristotle said to make a tragedy and a tragic hero. One of the requirements for being a tragic hero according to Aristotle is "a [great] man who is neither a paragon of virtue and justice nor undergoes the change to misfortune through any real badness or wickedness but because of some mistake." There must be some mistake made by the character flaw that causes the great man’s fortunes to turn for the worst. Aristotle felt that there were certain plot devices that needed to take place in order for it to qualify as a tragedy and for the character to really be a tragic hero. Without a tragic hero there cannot be a tragedy happening, plot is a very important point. The plot of a true tragedy should be complex and consist of reversal and recognition. Both of these plot elements are contained within the play Oedipus...

...Kien Nguyen Essay #2 07/31/2013 ENGL 100F/ 18:30-21:50/ M-T Chris Andrews An Emoticons Era Nowadays, with the non-stop developments of socioeconomics, it is an undeniable truth that technologies and social networks are playing a vital role in our daily life. We have come to the new era of communication when people can contact each other everywhere, at every moment. Thus, technologies are now the dominant factor in our communication today, since we have such an exceptional access to information and people. Truly, geographic limitation is now destroyed in terms of communication. However, we are becoming more ignorant about how these technologies are affecting our life every day. We are abusing these communicating methods without acknowledging that our life and our own personalities are being spoiled. As a consequence, these technologies are bringing the lacks of social interaction, distraction, and the decayed expression of languages and emotions. The rise of technologies is leading to the collapse of our communication. Technologies are ruining social interaction among humans. Without a doubt, technologies have dominated our choices of interacting with each other. While the purpose of technologies was to improve the communication between humans, people now prefer using these tools to talk, rather than face-to-face conversations. In fact, human civilization has been always developed based on the connection between people, but now, we are losing that real connection in order...
