The purpose of communication is to share the meaning, and the method to deliver meanings is to use languages (Saylor Foundation, n.d., p57). For effective communication, a speaker needs to use words that have clear meanings and avoid words difficult to understand or offensive to an audience. Saylor Foundation(n.d. p57) raised six examples where a language becomes an obstacle in communication: Cliche, Slang, Jargon, Sexiest and racist language, Euphemism and Doublespeak.
Cliche is a stereotyped expression that has lost originality and impact by long overuse (Dictionary.com, n.d.). We should avoid using…show more content… For example, if a male business person alway use the word "man" when he/she refer to "a person" in his/her presentation, women in the audience may feel as if they are not considered as "a person". Such an unfavorable experience will be an obstacle when he has a business talk with one of the women after his presentation.
Euphemism is an indirect, mild and vague expressions a speaker use when he/she hesitates to express it directly in terms of a social norm (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Although such expressions are better than direct expressions, they still have an unfavorable meaning, and an audience easily know what the speaker intent to say. For example, a speaker mentions that his friends love to eat, and he is portly. The word “portly” is mild expression meaning overweight. The audience instantly knows what you mean. They may even think the speaker looks down the friends because of his obesity.
Doublespeak is an ambiguous language to deceive or confuse an audience and conceal unfavorable facts (Dictionary.com, n.d.). Politicians and bureaucrats frequently use these kinds of expressions. For example, once nuclear accidents occurred in
