In Federalist 14, Madison argues against the idea that the United States is too large to function as an effective republic. Anti-Federalists believe that the people are the power in a republic, and the people must properly be represented by people who share their values and beliefs. Madison argues for this, but adds his own theory on the issue: “in a republic, they assemble and administer it by their representatives and agents.
